UNO 1.5.2 (Mac OS X)

Perfect

With Mac OS X, Apple introduced the new Aqua interface. Then Metal. Then the iTunes metal look. They're all nice, but they also all offer slightly different visual cues, and different draggable areas, and different clickable areas. I find this ever so slightly annoying. Uno fixes Apple's fragmented interface. With Uno, you get one look, the iTunes Unified look, across the whole operating system. This creates not only visual consistency, but behavioral consistency, too. The Unified look is not my favorite, but having one consistent interface, everywhere, makes up for the minor visual deficiencies. [alert admin]

ToDo Plus 3.60 (Palm OS)

Great To Do list manager

ToDo Plus replaces the built-in Palm ToDo app, adding much-needed features like alarms, more flexible sorting and the ability to add notes and sketches to each item in your to do list. I started using it a couple of years ago, and this app has been on my list of indispensible Palm software ever since. One of the best parts is that it uses the built-in ToDo manager's database, so this remains 100% compatible with existing conduits. [alert admin]

StuffIt Deluxe 10.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Warning: This Product Is Seriously Flawed!

I don't normally write bad reviews, nor attention-grabbing headings like that above, but in this case, I have to make an exception. After installing the latest Mac OS X (10.4.2) update, my Finder began repeatedly quiting and restarting every two minutes. After much digging on the Web, I was able to determine that the problem was StuffIt's folder-watch feature. Completely wiping StuffIt Deluxe 10.0.0 (requiring manually removing some files) and then reinstalling StuffIt fixed the problem. Until I upgraded to StuffIt Deluxe 10.0.1. Now the problem's back. And now I can't find the troubleshooting forum that discussed the problem, nor the instructions for removing, or I'd provide links for you. The good news is that it appears that StuffIt Deluxe's installer will do the trick, too. All I can say is: caveat emptor. This software is not worth the money. [alert admin]

Equation Service 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Fantastic

For those of us who need to communicate mathematical formulas in email, this program is a god-send. write up an equation in LaTeX, select the text and then press command-/. A nicely formatted image of the equation is inserted where the text was, at high enough resolution for printouts to look pretty good. Use the program directly to generate larger images or higher-resolution output. Simple and effective software. [alert admin]

httpmail plugin 1.30 (Mac OS X)

Works Great

After upgrading to Panther, I installed 1.3 of httpmail, set up my Hotmail account again, and everything's working great. It's great to have access to Hotmail via my email client again. [alert admin]

MailPictures 2.4 (Mac OS X)

Very Handy

This is a great way to put a face to people I correspond with. Very easy to set up, and automatic in use. Best of all, emails that I send aren't unnecessarily long; if the recipient doesn't have this capability, then they'll never know the difference. Two small problems: there seems to be some conflict with GPGMail, and MailPictures can't get images from servers that use a redirect URL due to limitations in Apple's code. [alert admin]

Web Confidential Mac/Palm OS Bundle 1.2.1 (Palm OS)

The best password…

store I have used. Allows you to store your passwords or generate new random ones and stores them securely using the Blowfish algorithm. Easy to use, sorts and organizes passwords in a nice cardfile-style database. To top it off, there are versions for Palm OS, Mac OS, and Windows, allowing you to synchronize your passwords across all three platforms (though the Windows application is, in my opinion, poorly designed and more difficult to use than the Mac OS or Palm OS versions). If you use all three systems and don't have a good enough memory to recall all your passwords, PINs, credit card numbers and other personal data, Web Confidential is well worth the shareware price for all three versions.
