Altiverb 5.4.5 (Mac OS X)
$595 for software emulating hardware?
For that kind of money, you can loop your signals through a pretty nice hardware unit for reverb, without bogging down your processor or constantly proving you didn't steal it. I guess the publisher has calculated he would make more money selling fewer copies at high prices. Those of us without huge recording budgets will learn to live without it. [alert admin]

SuperDuper! 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)
The product works as advertised, the interface is clear and reassuring, and tech support is both speedy and competent -- not to mention friendly and good-humored. I've had three clients (so far) buy this and an external Firewire/USB 2.0 drive to replace clumsy, expensive, flaky Retrospect backup systems. I REALLY like the fact that backups are done as normal file types, not packed into one huge archive that can only be searched or opened with proprietary software. [alert admin]

VueScan 8.3.33 (Mac OS X)
49 bucks? I'll order a scanner for that much
This software works with my SCSI-based Epson scanner, but ruins the scan with gray dollar signs unless I fork over $49. For the same $49, Amazon will sell me a similar entry-level Canon scanner with its own MacOS X software for my kids to scan color prints. No dollar signs to sabotage the scans. A little less greed and Mr. Hamrick would have pocketed more money. Oh well. It's his right to price himself out of contention. You folks with old $1,300 scanners? Before you spend $49 on this to make them work, take note of the specs you can get these days for under $300 and much less. [alert admin]

Check Failed Password Attempts 0.1.7 (Mac OS X)
New version still reports "Nothing is logged. The secure log file doesn’t exist." This was after I entered wrong passwords to generate Failed Password Attempts. Where the allegedly missing log should be, I don't know. The program and the author haven't been helpful on this point. Some might get a false sense of security from these results. The Console log seems to indicate this program secretly depends on a third-party add-on for Applescript called 24U Appearance OSAX. If so, it should be listed in requirements. (It's also quite possible I don't understand any of this!) 2005-04-02 14:59:46.427 Check for Failed Password Attempts[1228] CFLog (21): Cannot find executable for CFBundle 0x4d869d0 </Library/ScriptingAdditions/24U Appearance OSAX.osax> (not loaded) [alert admin]

Check Failed Password Attempts 0.1.5 (Mac OS X)
Generates error: Can't make file "Macintosh HD:private:var:log:secure.log" into a alias Why it needed to make an alias, I don't know. It didn't tell me what I should do differently. A previous version complained that a particular file didn't exist. [alert admin]

This sounds like a very useful utility in certain circumstances, but I was unable to try it. http://www.sdesoftware.com/ seems to be offline right now. [alert admin]

Acquisition 116.4 (Mac OS X)
I notice Jeff Mincey is still an omnipresent Versiontracker gadfly who likes to hear himself talk. But he once again shows he has nothing to share except his unfair attitude and his flawed "logic." It's lack of "discipline" that leads the developer to post improved, enhanced and bug-reduced new versions? What a moronic statement! My experience with this software indicates the author has continued to keep making it better, in terms of performance. fewer glitches, better interface, and aesthetic improvements. Jeff Mincey's assumptions seem to be that 1.) new bugs are introduced each time there's a new version, 2.) a longer testing period would invariably uncover these, and 3.) people suffering from old bugs (that have been fixed in the lab) ought to continue getting bitten until ALL problems have been resolved. You have to wonder what motivates a Jeff Mincey to post such complaints. What PROBLEM does it cause him when the developer posts a new version? If these come "too often," couldn't a Mincer just skip every third release instead of pontificating about how HE would do things? My opinion after nearly two years of using Acquisition: What a great piece of work! I suffered horribly with Limewire's worse-than-sluggish behavior, which brought my Mac to its knees. Later versions wouldn't even install. Along came Acquisition, working smoothly and effectively. I paid the shareware fee. Then came improvements with no extra charge, like being able to play MP3s before they are fully downloaded to see what you're getting. Don't judge software by the chronic naysayers who seem to live here, ready to pounce on imagined flaws in order to give their little sanctimonious rants. [alert admin]

SoundConverter 20040921 (Mac OS X)
Add me to the list of people who are moving on because the 500k limit makes the demo worthless to me. Better to allow only five conversions or a five-day time limit, in my opinion. For all I know, it chokes on anything bigger than 1Mb. Also, I was able to use Quicktime Pro to determine why a certain AIFF file would not import into iTunes. (It was either the 22.050 sample rate or IMA 4:1 compression. Movie Player converted it just fine, thank you.) [alert admin]

Acquisition 112.2 (Mac OS X)
I paid $15 for this last October, got a registration code, and enjoyed the lack of nags. Updated versions, no problem -- until now with 112.2. It thinks I'm a trial user, but won't let me enter my registration code to prove otherwise, because it can't find my e-mail address on his list. (Nothing has changed.) I wrote to the developer giving all the old registration info, PayPal transaction #, etc. Let's hope he responds in the next few days and fixes the problem. [alert admin]

VueScan 7.6.84 (Mac OS X)
My UMAX SCSI scanner was only $59 new. After it died, a client sold me hers for $10. My daughters use it to scan a few drawings or photos for their web site. I understand this software may be worth the cost to people with expensive scanners, if it rescues their workflow and productivity and they make money with it. While I'd like to scan in OS X, I can't justify paying $59 for software. We boot into OS 9 and use the free plug-ins. Our need is so infrequent. I wish Vuescan had a consumer or academic price of $19.99 or $24.95, then he'd get our money. Limit that version to 72 dpi so it's not used by graphics pros? [alert admin]

RE A review in there somewhere?
> Is there a review here somewhere? Next time you post something, notice that you can post 1.) A review and ratings(after using it), 2.) A commentary (with or without using it) without ratings. Pricing is a part of the software equasion just like quality, features, competitive alternatives, value, etc. It's a legimate area for comment. I didn't say the publisher had no right to charge whatever he wants. I just said he left money on the table…

The $17.99 as a once-in-a-lifetime payment is not exactly burdensome or exploitation. This software was really good when I first paid for it -- much, MUCH better than LimeWire -- and the developer has continued to improve it version after version, for YEARS now. I have paid more for worse software from developers who have disappeared from the face of the earth. Anyone who thinks the comparison to Limewire might be valid should simply download and…

You've used it long enough to see if it works well for you, right? Pay for it or stop using it. That's how shareware is supposed to work. If you don't like the nags, pony up a few bucks and make them go away. If you don't like the software enough to pay for it, delete it. Acquisition is hardly unique in making it inconvenient to keep leeching for free. GraphicConverter, one of the Mac shareware "stars,"…

New version reports: "Nothing is logged. The secure log file doesn't exit." I presume it means "exist" instead of "exit." What is the REAL meaning of these results? There is no record of failed attempts because there WERE no failed attempts? Is there a logging function that should be turned on for this utility to have a log to check?

I notice you spent more than half of your post rambling about people's screen names or my writing style. The rest seemed to be you bragging about yourself, and discussing the illusion you have that you are good at remote psychoanalysis. I also noticed you follow Jeff Mincey around and do "me-too" for him. It's kinda cute, actually. Both of you appear to have a little anti-Acquisition crusade going for some time…

It's your position that software this complex could be 100% bug-free and crash-proof in all circumstances, if only tested in "more thorough" fashion? Well guess what, Mr. QA Expert, I don't know of any real software engineers who'd make such a claim. You simply can't anticipate and duplicate every system it…
