StuffIt Expander 2010 (Mac OS X)

installer crashes

I've used prior versions of StuffIt, both paid and free versions for over 10 years, probably almost 15, and it has always been a valued utility (I was an IT consultant to medical and dental offices for over 10 years). However, there seem to be occasional problems with installation like the one I encountered today. After downloading, I tried to install, and the installer gets past a couple of screens including the EULA and Read Me but then it quits suddenly with a dialogue box that says: "Missing Critical Component Installer help application missing." Since I'm updating a lot of my software during lunch, I have managed to do a number of update installs thus far, and therefore have no reason to believe that it's my machine... Unfortunately, I don't have time to diagnose the trouble at this point, so I'll wait for them to "fix" the installer. [alert admin]

aMac Digital Radiography 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Forgot to rate it...

I've used this product for several months and if you want to know how easy it is to use, try iPhoto... it's easier than that and I didn't think it could get much easier than iPhoto! When you buy the product, there is very little documentation that is needed. Like many Apple applications, it is very intuitive. Installation is as close to one-step as you can get with an OS X app. Use is, as I've said, intuitive. You don't have to know digital radiography to acquire and manipulate images. All you have to do is click buttons on the interface. It even knows which patient the image belongs to (as long as you know), so it can't be stored in the wrong place. So what little documentation there is comes with the installation disk. If you need support, you can arrange paid support through aMac DR directly. How better than direct from the "horse's mouth"? I don't know of another digital radiography program, Mac- or Windows-based, that offers all the features of this product. They keep adding tools as they update the program and this is an incredible "hidden" benefit of this software. Price: I'm a dental practice management consultant and when I do a return on investment analysis for my clients, the typical ROI of about 1 year is always met with very pleasant surprise, so don't let the basic kit cost of $12,000 discourage you. The hardware has a 2-year warranty, not the usual 1 year of other manufacturers. Worth a lot when you look at the cost of warranty extension programs! [alert admin]

aMac Digital Radiography 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)

best software for OS X, even for Windoz users

I've used the aMac demo for about 3 months now, various releases, and it just keeps getting better (more filters, tools, smoother, faster) and in comparing it to any other product, Windows or Mac, in my opinion, there is NO comparison. If you want a stable, non-glitchy product that provides patient info on the screen and stores the images with the other patient clinical info, this is the ONLY product out there. Nothing else comes close. In addition, it interfaces seamlessly with most of the Mac practice management packages out there and you can even use a digital intraoral camera, not only to snag individual frames, but to capture QuickTime movies as well directly into aMac. As far as a comment on the question on cost, each dentist's professional practice situation will determine how much the package costs since it includes the digital sensors and interface box as well as the software. If your dentist is interested, have them contact aMac at the phone number or email listed here or on the website. Tell Dave Krugman that "The Mac Guy" sent you. He's really very knowledgeable. If you have a Windows system, he can tell you how to use aMac to view your images. [alert admin]

Microsoft Virtual PC 6.1.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

MicroSh*t VPC 6.1.1 update is trash

I have used VPC since version 3. As long as Connectix provided support, the updates always warned the user to shut down any "saved states" before updating the application. This is the first update I've run since MicroSh*t took over and I anticipated that there would be a "shutdown warning" someplace after the unstuffing of the .sit file. I got distracted during the install and before I knew it, my WinXP drive was damaged and I can't "undo" the install. As far as I'm concerned, this is a deliberate attempt by MicroSh*t to waste a perfectly good product. Thanks, Gates, your company continues to show how cutthroat it is reflect what a slimeball you are!! Either support the product honestly or let someone who will! [alert admin]

EricX23, Maybe you…

should learn to read: this update says it's for LASERWRITERS... NOT INK JET! You might want to learn something about your equipment BEFORE you make an ass of yourself! [alert admin]

Mac Unicorn Soft:…

How can a product "rock" if it crashes alot, is the highest security risk and even uses ActiveX which permits unauthorized access to the users machine? Communicator is more Java-compliant and less susceptible to crackers and virus writers efforts. I don't care how good it looks if it makes people anxious and apprehensive each time we try to open an email! Use something else! Anything, just not IE or OE! [alert admin]

Symantec Norton Utilities 6.0 (Mac OS 9)

Although I haven't…

used v.6 as yet, I have used NU for 3 years and make my living as a Mac consultant and tech, and yes, it does amazing stuff. I also use TTP, DiskWarrior and Apple's proprietary tools because no one of these does it all. I am dismayed however to see nothing in the above description that says "Now boots from the CD on the latest G4s without long, involved and messy RAM disk workarounds!" What's up, Symantec? Does it? EPSON Stylus COLOR 777 6.4aA (Mac OS 9)

Just tried to…

install the drivers for the 777 that came free with a client's iMac. Machine was working fine before that... guess what: lock ups on restart, Finder crashes with Type 41, locks up on desktop rebuild, etc., etc. This is not the first time I've had this problem with Epson drivers. I don't know which version came packaged with the printer. Does anyone know if this improves the typical Epson printer driver fragility and the problem I am experiencing? [alert admin]

As someone who…

makes a living recommending and supporting hardware, I would never choose a device I thought wouldn't perform properly. I'll lose a sale before I stoop to recommend ATTO or Initio cards. I have installed perhaps 100 Adaptec cards in my clients' machines with not one failure, not difficulties with multiple devices. The 2906 is an incredible device for the price and Adaptec's support is indeed world-class. People like 128k Mac should remember that this is the place to address the quality of the update, not the hardware. If you have a hardware issue, then take it to Adaptec's support group and talk about it there! SoftRAID is a cheap and sloppy emulation of the real hardware and finally, I have never used Silverlining with an Adaptec card. Would you put diesel fuel in a Porsche? [alert admin]

please be more explicit

When you say use "caution with this software", is there some functionality issue or are you just concerned because you had trouble removing it? Could you please be more explicit? Thanks!

Why hide the price?

BunnyRevenger, I'm a dental practice management consultant, focusing on Mac-based practices (although we talk with everyone), and have clients all over the US and Canada as well as in many countries in Mexico, Central and South America and Europe. I've never seen a better digital radiography product for either Mac or PC. If you have your dentist call me and he buys aMac DR from me, I'll happily pay you a finder's fee of $200. Please let…

Dave, Great response. Hopefully BunnyRevenger will contact you or have his dentist do so. Sorry it took so long for me to review your product on versiontracker. I've gotten great responses from the dentists so far. You may be getting leads from them. AmarilloMacGuy
