Symantec Norton AntiVirus 11.0 (Mac OS X)
AntiVirus apps in general and especially NAV are notoriously unpopular among Mac power-users, however this latest version of NAV is actually a good product. I have found it to be stable and responsive on two G4 systems. The fact is that there is some Mac malware out there and it is not stupid for a Mac user to be protected. In addition the new vulnerability protection feature allows Symantec to actually patch zero-day type OS vulnerabilities if Apple is slow to release a security update. It's a compelling addition to the app. NAV 11 is much more refined than it's previous versions which took severe beating in these VersionTracker comments. I will say that the price of the app and the yearly subscription ipdates are bit on the high side, especially when compared to its PC counterpart... [alert admin]

VLC media player 0.8.6e (Mac OS X)
Window positions not remembered
Up until this release (0.8.6e) the on screen location of the video window and the Controller would be remembered. Now even if I move them to my desired location on the screen they are are always back in the default position the next time the app is launched. Very frustrating. Tried trashing VLC prefs wit no luck... 10.4.11 PPC [alert admin]

TrueCrypt 5.0 (Mac OS X)
Seems like this initial release for OSX has quite a few glitches that will need to be addressed. At this point this app does not inspire much confidence. In addition, I don't think that this is going to be the cross-platform encryption panacea that everyone is hoping for... Example: If you have a TrueCrypt volume from a previous release which is in NTFS format then you will not have write access to it under TruCrypt on OSX ! [alert admin]

McAfee VirusScan 8.6 (Mac OS X)
Is Mcafee Virus Scan available for home users?
Is this app even available for home users? The link to the developers site is dead and I can't find any trace of a Mac offering at the Mcafee website (which is not Safari friendly, BTW). What's the deal? [alert admin]

I still stand behind my negative rating of TrueCrypt, especially as it pertains to cross-platform use. The product does not do what is advertised on the tin. The average user should not have to mess around with additional components just to be able to use an existing TC volume with the Mac version of TC.

>Use a different filesystem and you'll be fine. That doesn't do much to help the rather large user-base of Windows users who have TC volumes that they can't fully use with the Mac version of TC despite claims in the TC FAQ that "TrueCrypt volumes are fully cross-platform."

In-fact the Mac version of TrueCrypt does include the MacFuse framework as part of the installation. Unfortunately, the Mac section of the TrueCrypt.org forum has several messages indicating an inability to mount or write TrueCrypt NTFS volumes under OSX. Hopefully those reports are not indicative of an actual lack of NTFS support in the Mac version, but that is how I am interpreting them at this point. There are also reports of the app failing…

The author has version 1.6.a1 available at his site which was originally released for the Safari 3 beta. It seems to be working fine with 10.4.11/Safari 3.0.4. The only issue is that the GIF options are disabled.

Breaks Gmail webmail in Safari
Okay, it looks like this update is probably not responsible for the Gmail/Basic view issue! Gmail is apparently having this issue on multiple platforms. I still stand by my general disappointment in Safari/Google for not fully supporting each other. SERBIAN, did you know that the Gmail web interface is supposed to have integrated chat functions?? But they are not available in Safari! Also, rich text editing within Gmail is not supported in Safari either... Not to mention that…
