Prism Video Converter 1.28 (Mac OS X)
I work in a video house, and we need rapid conversion of files to other formats, often in large batches, as when we're converting an entire season of a sitcom to prepare for subtitles and a DVD release. We don't need something like Episode. We're not making production renders. We just need a nice clean and fast avi or mpg1 out of a Mac or whatever format. This is FAST, and another advantage is that there's a Windows version too. So if the Mac is open, we'll convert with one; if a Windows machine is free, we'll convert it with Windows. How fast is it? Well, when some production house sends us a DVD recorded without copy protection, it takes real time to capture the video into an avi. And then we might need a mov copy or avi. So it'll take 1x time, plus the additional conversions. Other converters seem to choke, for instance on H.264. Or they deliver an mpeg 1 with the audio out of sync. Or the other converter does the wmv well, but only with a specific original. This converter is FAST. Drop in the DVD, and it converted a Video_TS folder of an 1:40 movie in 44 minutes. Put the same DVD in the line and make a wmv -- again, half time. It batches very easily [alert admin]

Annotation Edit 1.4.9 (Mac OS X)
The one weakness that existed in Annotation was that it wouldn't italicize a single word in a Blu-ray title -- like a book title or a ship's name, or the like. This version fixes that. I can't think of a single feature now it doesn't have. Again, the production industry should definitely pay attention to this fast-rising application. [alert admin]

Annotation Edit 1.3.5.1 (Mac OS X)
I expressed some hesitation about this package when I first wrote about it, but its steady development, and my growing understanding of the sometimes unconventional way that it works, particularly for title creation, have erased any doubts I had. The Blu-ray plugin, for example, is a plain winner, besting software packages that you pay a lot more for. You can create 32-bit subtitles with alpha channel, and two different sorts of 8-bit titles that work with Scenarist. There's a preview, so you can see exactly what your type will look like. For many, many uses, you get more from this program than you do from programs that sell for tens of thousands more. Having used a number of software packages out there now, I can recommend this program whole-heartedly. It continues getting better and better. Buy it now before the price goes up! [alert admin]

Little Snitch 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Which would mean there's nothing wrong with the app. I think what's going on is the Installer has screwed up permissions. I didn't have an immediate panic. It just wouldn't restart. Something was holding on tight and not letting diskmounter let go. Eventually, I got the Installer disk to boot it (Mac G5 Dual 2.0), and I clicked on "Repair disk." It stopped immediately, and said it couldn't unmount my regular drive. So I ran permissions, and it worked. There were 3 or 4 things there -- 0's that should be 80's, that sort of thing. Nothing major. Then, I ran disk repair, and in two minutes, everything was fine, and I'm now booted up. That's my initial guess, anyway: a good update, with a crummy installer that was tacked on without many tests as it went out the door. [alert admin]

Little Snitch 2.0 beta 9 (Mac OS X)
I have version 1. It's fine for me. I open an app, and usually, after watching when and how it communicates, I'll give it permission. It'd be nice to be able to click "tell me about something unusual" here, but I understand the problem. The beta I've tried just keeps on chattering forever. It's interesting to watch for a while, and there should be a mode where you watch all traffic, whether you've permitted it or not. But then, only if there's an unusual outbound request that's out of the normal pattern for the application. [alert admin]

X-Chat Aqua 0.16.0 (Mac OS X)
This was working for me, but then it stopped. I try to open it, and it closes. Thread 0 has crashed. Error ID 1002. The Mac lacks a decent tool to find out why programs do this. [alert admin]

Google Earth 4.0.2722 (Mac OS X)
My house is at the wrong place
Can anybody tell me why my house, in Glendale CA, is located one house to the west? I mean, in Google maps, on Google Earth, AND on my Magellan GPS on my car, my address is "located" one door to the west on my street. No big deal, but when I'm somewhere far away, it's great to push "Home" on the GPS and just follow directions. But if I approach from the East, I never get there, and when I start the car, it asks me if I want to go home, and I have to cancel. If I approach from the east, it tells me "You've arrived" when I'm at the neighbor's. It's no big deal, but I'd like to have somebody explain this to me. [alert admin]

AppleJack 1.4.3rc3 (Mac OS X)
I've got a question. It finally did solve my random quits on launch of many apps, so that's great. But my Dual 2.0 G5 PowerMac (the original) sounds like it's going to explode. The fan steadily gets louder and louder all the time this is running. Anybody else? I mean, it doesn't explode, but I'd like to be able to do something about this, because it just sounds WRONG. I've been using Gmail for years now, and it's still called "Beta." I've used a lot of apps in the Beta phase. Certain things don't work, but you send in notice to the developer of what happened to you. This absolutely screws up CNN, YouTube or any other Flash video site on my computer, running Leopard on a G5. That's pretty severe. That's what consumers want first and foremost from Flash. If THAT doesn't work,…

I think you'll wait a long time, dude. Jobs will never do it. Why should he? They're growing like crazy without the headache of developing for nine bazillion different Windows environments. It's like when Jobs returned: the first thing he did, the immediate thing, was to cancel all the cheap clones. They were hemorrhaging money. Sure a lot of people just like the Macs. They're cool. But there's enough people with your attitude to lose…

Only by going to System Preferences->Flip4Mac and deselecting "Open Quicktime Player." Then those streams will open in the browser window, in my experience. To use the same Quicktime window as a video browser? Not that I know of.

It's pretty dopey to criticize software by complaining that you can't get drivers for some hardware to work with it. The only feature in the Windows version that isn't here is the ability to bet "Skype broadcasts," but it's no big deal.

Don't use Norton. It stinks. If you have Tiger, it isn't even compatible.

You must have, like I do, Office X 10.1.6. This is the only version that does this. Install 2.02. Magically, it fixes the incompatibility.

First, there is no "avi" codec. Second, you can get Xvid and DiVX codecs for the Mac, at the respective websites. There are many others available. Windows media can either be played with the Windows Media Player for OS X, If you don't mind spending a little money, you can get the Flip4Mac codecs, and you can play most .wmv files in Quicktime. So, if I can say, get a clue before you complain.

I know. I've been actually leaving suggestions to Dave Hyatt for years. Why can't you sort Safari bookmarks the same way you do with iTunes? After all, they've solved the problem of the ever-expanding, sloppy bookmarks menu. How hard could it be to click on the header, and sort by name or url? I just don't know. On the other hand, they do have "Search" in the bookmarks now, at least. Until then, Bookdog is the…
