IOXWebcamX 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Leopard compatible version

There's apparently a Leopard compatible version of this in the works, you can download a beta from their website but here's the bad news: "This version is FREE for users who purchased version 1.1 after October 26, 2007 (Leopard release date) and for users who purchased the 1.2 beta version." Which means if you bought it before October 26, you will have to re-purchase it (at full price as far as I can tell, unless there's mention of a discount hidden somewhere) JUST so you can use it for Leopard. So here's how it goes for me: Webcam - $70 IOXperts Tiger driver: $20 IOXperts Leopard driver: $20 iChatUSBCam: $10 That's an extra $50 to keep a $70 webcam working. I don't advise throwing good money after bad -- time to get a USB Video Class cam and be done with this cr@p. [alert admin]

DivX for Mac 6.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Ridiculous EULA

Apart from the warnings that you will be spied upon, possibly spammed, and have toolbars foisted upon you, apparently you're not allowed to transcode FROM DivX to anything else: "NO TRANSCODING: You are prohibited from using this software with a software or hardware product whose purpose is to "transcode" or convert DivX video or DivX Media Format content into an alternate format." Not only is this clause laughable and unenforceable, it's inexcusable. Imagine rendering out an animation from your favorite 3D package to a DivX movie (I know, it's not the smart way to work but just bear with me for this theoretical scenario). You then realize it should have been H.264, and to make that deadline you need to transcode it rather than rendering it out all over again. But wait! Taken at face value, you're PROHIBITED from changing the format of your OWN data that YOU created! Can you imagine being prohibited from exporting your 100-page Word document to RTF? Or "transcoding" that TIFF to a JPEG? My response can only be "Um... How about a big hot cup of GoToHeck?!" [alert admin]

Apple QuickTime 7.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Still breaks Acrobat 7

Can't they get this right? We're at 7.0.2 now for both Acrobat and QuickTime, and playback of QuickTime in PDFs still doesn't work. This is pathetic. [alert admin]

QuickTime 7 STILL broken!

This is ridiculous. Here we are with the third update to Acrobat 7 and still it won't work with QuickTime 7 embedded or linked media. Has Adobe totally withdrawn support for multimedia content within PDFs? QuickTime 7 and Tiger were released while my company was in the middle of developing an important PDF for a client, with embedded QuickTime movies. Suddenly we found ourselves having to write a ReadMe providing work-arounds (like downloading and installing Acrobat 6) for affected systems. Very embarrassing. This problem has not been acknowledged or addressed by either Apple or Adobe. WE'RE STILL WAITING, YOU GUYS! [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 7.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Still borked with QuickTime 7

I thought this update would fix the QuickTime 7 playback bug. I have several PDFs with embedded or linked QuickTime movies, and Reader 7 claims to not have the correct media player. Readers 5 and 6 have no problem with QuickTime 7. Reader 7 has no problem with QuickTime 6. It's the deadly combination of QuickTime 7 and Reader 7 that doesn't work - and both are the latest. Apple and Adobe have had enough time to fix this. WHEN WILL THIS BE FIXED?? [alert admin]

24 Clock 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Annoying, yes...

But here are some suggestions to make it actually useful as well as cool, the key being to keep it silent except for specific events: - Have it make that noise once an hour instead, for the last four seconds before the hour (or optionally every 15 minutes or half hour). - Make it translucent (with opacity slider of course). - Give it an alarm clock feature - have its digital display pop up at a user-set time and play four ticks. - Keep it silent until you click on its display, at which time it plays four ticks. (Call it affirmation!) - Is there some way to hook it into iCal's alarm feature? Substitute it into the "Message with sound" reminder. [alert admin]

Desktop Manager 0.5.2rc2 (Mac OS X)

Great little app

I love this app, it really helps to reduce the clutter. I have a dual monitor setup and enjoy the cube effect. But the cube spins only on my secondary display (21" CRT), cant get it to work on my main display (23" Cinema), which changes instantaneously. Is there any way to make the transition work on both? Does the digital display have anyting to do with it? (I wouldn't think so, just a guess.) [alert admin]

Epson Stylus Photo 1280 1.6bA (Mac OS X)

What is wrong with these people?

I have an Epson 1270. I paid good money for it. So far Epson has ignored this printer since releasing its bare-bones driver for X. (Don't tell me to use GIMP Print, I have it and its output sucks.) All I want is feature parity with its OS 9 and Windoze counterparts, namely the ability to center on page and to print with a thin bottom margin. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK, EPSON??? [alert admin]

Strata 3Dpro 3.9 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

User Be Intelligent!

The Read-Me that comes up before installation explains this to you. You have only yourself to blame for not backing up before going ahead with the installation. From the Read-Me: "Strata 3Dpro 3.9 will require you to re-enter your serial number and to verify against your Strata 3Dpro 3.8 CD. This will become apparent when you launch the software after completing the update process." How much clearer about it do they have to be? Where IS your CD anyway? I have been using this product since it was called StudioPro 1.0, and 3.9 is the best version ever. It is rock-solid under OS X, has countless under-the-hood enhancements and improvements, and even brings back a couple of features from the "good old days" including alpha rendering that excludes the background color, and the render-complete sound. Rendering is faster, with significantly more efficient raydiosity and caustics, "shadow optimizations" that you can toggle on and off, better handling of low-intensity lights, and improved anti-aliasing to name a few. There is now a way to kill the dreaded Nested Nodes. Better VRML import. Subtle but much-needed interface improvements. The list goes on... It should keep most of us happy until they finally get version 4.0 going. We need better modeling (SDS, NURBS, better metaballs etc.), spline deformations, improved animation tools, and some kind of a hybrid renderer. I don't work for Strata, I'm just a satisfied customer. Scrolling-to-top bug

The annoying scrolling behavior is actually a result of the new Safari 3 WebKit. If you use the Safari 3 beta uninstaller package and revert to Safari 2, Yahoo scrolling will return to normal. I have NEVER been able to transfer a file over Yahoo Messenger.

Scrolling to top

The annoying scrolling behavior is actually a result of the new Safari 3 WebKit. If you use the Safari 3 beta uninstaller package and revert to Safari 2, Yahoo scrolling will return to normal. You can hardly blame Yahoo for this, since the new WebKit broke a lot of things. And I'm debating with myself whether Yahoo should have come out with a quick patch to fix it, or if they are right in waiting for…

An unusual update?

A bit of ineptitude I saw on this updater is that it's a 98 MB disk image containing a 32.5 MB updater, and 54.6 MB of free space! Why make us download a huge uncompressed disk image with wasted space??

I'll bet he does know that there is no version of Skype that has webcam support, and THAT'S WHY HE'S ASKING FOR IT! Don't you agree that webcam support would be a logical extension of this app?
