Jack OS X 0.82 (Mac OS X)

Cannot uninstall

This application is too complicated for me, and now I can't uninstall it. Either the provided Uninstall file doesn't work, or I don't know how to use Terminal. In either case, Terminal refuses to accept input, so I can't input my password. Now my Mac has trouble doing all sorts of things, and I can't restore it to working condition. This seems to be a fine application, but it's not for simple Mac users like me. [alert admin]

FLNewsBrowser 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

The French is definitely not a native speaker

The French that I heard today isn't remotely close. It's probably a computer voice, pronouncing according to the rules of American English. Not useful at all. [alert admin]

Pixelmator 1.2 (Mac OS X)

I'm not a pro, but love it

I don't have a professional's experience with other image applications, but this one delights me. I imagine that it will soon evolve to meet pro requirements as well. [alert admin]

Ocean Waves 1.4 (Mac OS X)

It works great for me

It works perfectly here, and it solved a big noise problem for me. The downtown here just got through installing background music just outside my window, and it was really irritating. Ocean Waves covers the muzak just fine, and I forget that it's there. One request: a few optional seagulls would be nice! [alert admin]

RapidoStart 1.6 (Mac OS X)

Yes, wonderful!

Apple ought to buy this and add it to the OS. It's MUCH nicer than the Dock. I had absolutely no trouble at all. Just try it! [alert admin]

MailSteward 7.7.8 (Mac OS X)

Great application, plus OS benefits

MailSteward is just terrific. It does everything it claims to, but there's another unexpected benefit: You don't have to throw out the original messages in your Mail mailboxes, but when I did, suddenly a set of mysterious recent Mail problems just went away. Now Mail runs as smooth as silk. Even cooler, the whole computer is faster now - OS, applications, everything. I have a Mac Pro, so I have plenty of RAM and speed and all the rest, so Mail must have been hogging resources in the background trying to sort things out. Mail is a wonderful application for sending and receiving messages, but it's not good at all for storage. MailSteward archives all your messages automatically every night, or whenever you choose. Within it you can search for messages by up to seven different variables simultaneously, and the searches are extremely fast. Until you're sure that all your messages were transferred correctly, you can leave them all in Mail's mailboxes. But soon you'll see that everything is fine. Then you can delete all the old stuff in Mail and enjoy the improved general performance. Every morning you can delete anything you don't need immediately, knowing there's a copy of it in a highly searchable database. I can't guarantee that other people will experience the system-wide change, but I definitely did. I should add that MailSteward support is fantastic. The developer answered several of my newbie questions immediately, responded to a bug report with a new version the same day and sent it to me, and agreed to a feature request. One hint: When searching its database for one variable, be sure that the AND option is chosen, not OR. "To" and "Subject" both show OR as the default, and that's not always what you need. In my opinion, adopting MailSteward is a no-brainer. You'll definitely love it. [alert admin]

Timesheet 0.8.2 (Mac OS X)

Good simple time-tracking app

I use Timesheet every day and like it a lot. The developer has been very responsive to questions and suggestions. And free is my favorite price! A few tips: 1. I eventually found it helpful to set up a small number of projects so as to end up with a simpler summary graph. 2. I eventually numbered my projects to make them appear in useful groupings. (The list is always alphabetical.) You can change the name of a project at any time without losing your old data. 3. Occasionally the software makes an error, failing to stop the clock on the previous project when you start a new one. Probably this happens when my hard drive goes to sleep. So at the end of a long project it's safer to stop that one before clicking another one. 4. If you forgot to change projects in real time, it's easy to edit the start and stop times later. But the software won't let you enter seconds when you do this, just hours and minutes. So type 1:57 PM, not 1:57:14 PM. 5. The software won't let you enter times that overlap another entry, which is a good thing. So it's easiest to change the earliest entry first, then the next one, and so on. Try it, I think you'll like it! [alert admin]

I hate it, hate it, hate it!!!!!

A great alternative is OnyX, and it's free. However, it's not yet compatible with Leopard.

Demo doesn't even run

It doesn't run on OS 10.3.9 because it needs OS 10.4. Not a fair complaint!

Why to update every kext

I update every kext whether I think I need it or not. Because: my G4 450 was having lots of •kernel panics•, sometimes six in a row. I almost gave up and bought a new Mac. A smart tech figured out that it might be a kext problem. I didn't know about them, but now I always update them. (So, did the kernel panics stop? Yes, but they always were intermittent. I'd have a dozen…
