Synchronize! Pro X 3.4.3 (Mac OS X)

I don't use Sync anymore... here's why...

It's slow and buggy. The feature list has become so huge that it's nearly impossible to figure out. Sync Pro "forgets" hard drives and can't be trusted to back up automatically. I've used their cloning product, too-- Backup Simplicity. It's a nice clone app; except sometimes it "forgets" to backup. I've had better success with Super Duper. I've used SD for nearly a year and find it wonderful. It's a great Mac utility; elegant, with many features, not one of which gets in the way of what you want. The learning curve is perfect. Simple for basics, step-by-step to more features. Here's a review I found that says the same thing: http://www.mac360.com/index.php/mac360/more/my_favorite_mac_backup_utility [alert admin]

SuperDuper! 1.3(68.1) (Mac OS X)

Great Review on SD

This is one of the best Mac utilities in recent years. I found a review that covers it in detail. There's a reason SD gets nearly 5 out of 5 stars: I've used SD for nearly a year and find it wonderful. BIAS Peak DV 4.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Goofy company... links broken...

I've had this product for years but seldom use it since others are available. I've upgraded regularly and suffered through the glitches and hiccups and problems of a product from BIAS. Example, the "updater" for Peak DV 4.1.1 doesn't exist. When you log in to download, all you'll get is 4.1 which came out some time ago. Click on the Support link? Nothing happens. Broken link. How about http://www.bias-inc.com/support? Well, that opens the directory in your browser (very insecure operation). Yeeesh. [alert admin]

Synchronize! Pro X 3.3 (Mac OS X)

BUYER BEWARE OF SPYWARE...

I've used Sync Pro for nearly two years. There are many apps that do backups, syncs, and copy files from one machine to another, one drive to another. This is the Swiss Army Knife version. It does many things and does them well. For $100. For a two year license. For one machine. Then you pay again. That includes installing -- SPYWARE -- on your Mac. This app does what it says it'll do... backup/clone to another hard drive. These are the same folks, Qdea Software, that make Backup Simplicity, another cloning application that costs $20. Per year. -- SPYWARE -- Sync Pro X goes a few steps farther by actually "phoning home" to Qdea's HQ and logging your IP address and serial number. Then, should you use the app on your laptop, it won't function properly. Backup Simplicity installs a "Launcher" which starts up automatically when you login. It then checks your local network for another version which may be using the same serial number. So, Qdea spys on you with their applications. While their software works OK, there are many others available that do similar backups and function very well. Compare prices (I've used them all): -- Carbon Copy Cloner (great app; pay what you can) -- RsyncX (clones for free) -- Deja Vu (folders and volumes; $20) -- PsyncX (like Rsync; free) -- Xupport (gobs of features; $20) -- ChronoSync (gobs of features; $30) -- SuperDuper (clones; $20) -- You Synchronize (many features; $50) -- Retrospect (gobs of features; $130) BTW - with Qdea software, you don't own what you pay for. Backup Simplicity goes for about $20 a year, while Sync Pro X is about $100 for two years. After that, the apps won't function and you're forced to pay again... and again. Do they tell you about their installed spyware components? No. Buyer beware. [alert admin]

Backup Simplicity 1.1.2 (Mac OS X)

BUYER BEWARE... SPYWARE...

This app does what it says it'll do... backup/clone to another hard drive. It's pricey compared to Carbon Copy Cloner which does pretty much the same thing but with more features (it's also free). Backup Simplicity is by the same company, Qdea Software, which makes Synchronize Pro X (also a good product, albeit pricey compared to others). Qdea overcharges and appears to install "spyware" on your Mac. -- SPYWARE -- Backup Simplicity installs a "Launcher" which starts up automatically when you login. It then checks your local network for another version which may be using the same serial number. Sync Pro X goes a few steps farther by actually "phoning home" to Qdea's HQ and logging your IP address and serial number. Then, should you use the app on your laptop, it won't function properly. The Logo Creator 3.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

DO NOT BUY THIS...

It's a trap. It just doesn't work very well. The application looks slick (graphics will do that. Even the box looks attractive. But it just doesn't work very well considering it's a 3.0 release. Worse yet, it's not a Cocoa app. It's written in Director and is slooooooowwww. How about stability? The box it came in is more stable. And more useful. Someone went to a lot of trouble to create a pseudo-application for Macs that looks cool, but creating an app in Director is a shortcut from Cocoa or anything else. It's non-intuitive, buggy (crashes regularly on both my Macs), and not worth this kind of money. You're better off buying a couple of books with a few hundred colorful logos and then use Graphic Converter to "recreate" those logos instead. For the same money you'll have a couple of good books, and a very good graphics application. I think there's a market for this kind of thing, though. Hey, I paid for an attractive box, right? You can do the same thing in Photoshop but you need about $700 and talent and time. The whole idea of an application like this is to help you with the talent part at a lower price. Unfortunately, you'll waste your money and still have no talent. Logo Creator is $39.95 at CompUSA. I'll let you have my copy at half that price. [alert admin]

StuffIt Deluxe 8.0.1 (Mac OS X)

No More Stuffit. Problems persist.

Too many Mac users are complaining about the same thing. Stuffit doesn't work worth c_r_a_p anymore. Unfortunately, I didn't listen, installed 8.0 and my dual PowerMac with OSX 10.2.8 wouldn't re-boot. Gray screen, small black box in the middle, no boot. I got rid of 8.0, went back to 7.3 and all is OK. So, I pissed away a $40 upgrade fee. Don't you make the same mistake. This is an upgrade to avoid. Aladdin's Q&A must be sub-contracted out to former Microsloth employees. Save your money and buy Panther instead (it comes with .zip pre-installed). I'm like the other folks; tired of the so-called "features" that inhibit performance. What used to take one click to un-stuff, can now take three or four clicks-- when it works. Enough already. A company will only improve the product when enough people go elsewhere. I'm gone. No more Aladdin. No more Stuffit. Long live .zip. [alert admin]

Televio 1.6.4 (Mac OS X)

GREAT REVIEW OF VERY BAD PRODUCT

Read the review below. It's great and absolutely spot on. This is a very bad product. The card probably works OK, but the software hardly works at all despite v1.6.4. Worse than the software is developer support. About all they do is shrug, scratch they head, and say, 'Hmmm. that happens sometimes.' DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT from anyone but me. And I'll sell it to you cheap. It came from Dr. Bott. Their service is to send you to the developer who's too busy quaffing down German beer to put together a product that actually works before trying to sell it. The review below (not mine; obvious style differences) is one of the best I've read of a really crummy product. Buyer Beware. I've purchased Formac's DV product and El Gato's Eye TV. Formac's video quality is remarkable. Very good. Software sucks and breaks regularly. El Gato (same folks who worked on Roxio's Toast) did it right except it's MPEG 1, not 2. That product works as advertised. Very slick. [alert admin]

Stay away from…

iBlog. Very buggy software. Preview is broken. FTP works one out of 10 tries. AFP does not work. Modify an entry and iBug creates a new entry. Worse, developer charges "per seat". If you re-install iBlog, that's two seats. Use iBug on your desktop AND your laptop, that's two seats. Re-install, that's another seat. iBug is so buggy they've had three updates this week alone. Corrupt sit archive? YES

I'm getting a corrupt sit archive, too. Quality assurance is about $30 worth. Or less.
