Cache Out X 5.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Glad it is back.... but...

I'm really glad this utility is back for Leopard... Thanks! However, I'm not sure the new UI (while prettier looking) is an improvement on the older versions. The older version more clearly separated system stuff from browser stuff, but more importantly, didn't remove cookies and history along with cache automatically (with no way to opt-out). From what I remember, it only did cache for browsers. I think most people would want to remove cache, but not necessarily cookies and history for a normal cleaning. It would be nice if this were broken apart or a preference or something. Also, the video introduction should be made more clearly optional. [alert admin]

Nisus Writer Express 2.5 (Mac OS X)

Excellent word processor...

There are many reasons that I love Nisus Writer Express, but I'll start with my two main points: 1) It is the word processor I have been seeking for many years (and I have been around computers for a LONG time). 2) It is basically compatible with the rest of the world. Do you know how long I have been looking for such a thing? Over the years, I have used many various programs as a 'word processor'. Some of these include: Word Perfect, Claris Works, Page Maker, Word, various text editors, Canvas, shareware apps, etc. I'm sure I have even missed a few. The problem with all these match my two points above. First, they either lacked features that I needed, or they had so many features that they were a mess to use. Word is a good example of the later. It is too cumbersome to be a good word processor, but doesn't begin to compare to Page Maker or InDesign for page layout. Why anyone uses Word is beyond me.... or is it? This brings me to point 2. The ONLY reason I can see someone using Word, is to feel they are compatible with the majority. And for me, NWE brings this full circle. I have struggled for years in keeping with a format that I could work between people. NWE uses RTF format. I don't even use DOC anymore. It can open Word DOC files, and unless some of the most extreme Word mess of tools is used, it does quite well with them. But.... if you use RTF, pretty much everyone can exchange files. It does all the features that any normal word processor user needs. And if people are doing things beyond that with Word, they really should move into InDesign anyway... it will work MUCH better for them. Beyond these two things, NWE has a lot of other appeal. Most of its tools and features are very easy to use. Its GUI is nicely laid out. I LOVE the integrated Thesaurus, and how I can watch it as I write (it is live in the side drawer as you work) to be sure I am using the correct word in proper context, or quickly suggesting a replacement. To boil it all down... it is a Simple Cocoa based app that uses the latest GUI coolness from Apple.... it does Everything a word processor should.... it complies to Standards to make you compatible with everyone... and it adds a lot of nice time saving features that writers actually need to help them Write! -Steve [alert admin]

CronniX 3.0 (Mac OS X)

I think Cron works the same...

tvalleau, just to clarify, I think you mean that the Apple OS X System tasks work differently under Tiger, not the Cron scheduling system. Cron is just a way of scheduling things... which Apple used to use for the system tasks. -Steve [alert admin]

Concepts Unlimited 2.0sp1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Speed of workflow is the key here.

Just wanted to report that this product is quite exceptional, and I believe, unique in this industry. The key here is the speed of workflow. I have tried and used various CAD packages over the years, but this one stands out. While some CAD packages might have a feature here or there that a user might need, this one constantly has been a core package for myself and many others. I can simply build things faster here.... and compared to some packages, many times faster. Once you get used to a couple components of its interface, the way it assists you in snapping, geometry construction, and numerical input set it apart from the rest. They also have a large variety of import and export (now including ElectricImage... YAY!) that make work with other packages even more flexible. -Steve [alert admin]

Logorrhea 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Awesome little app

This little app was the missing key for me to switch to using iChat. I HAVE to be able to search the logs to look up critical information. This does it really well so far, and is very easy to use. THANKS! Only thing I'd like to see, is the ability to search within a session ... and highlight the search-word. [alert admin]

Electric Image Universe 5.0.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Overall excellent program.…

Modeler could use a newer ACIS kernel update, and some GUI improvement. Camera is as always one of the best and fastest renderers around, and easily handles millions of polygons. Animator has an excellent interface that makes sense, and is all around a very powerful app. I only wish the company were a bit better about communicating with its customers about what is going on. Argon 6.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Excellent CAD and…

modeling capability. I love the interface! The drawing assistant helps me create what I want faster than any other CAD or 3D modeler I've used. I'm still on v5 and waiting to upgrade, but beta tested this new v6 on OSX. Also, I couldn't say enough good things about Ashlar as a company. Best interaction and customer service I've ever had with a software developer. [alert admin]

VueScan 7.5.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

The software works…

just fine. The web site clearly states why some scanners are not supported. It's not their job to make every scanner in the world work. Just be happy there is someone besides the UMAX idiots working on software. When UMAX goes out of business, you'll be wishing for more software like this. [alert admin]

Carbon Copy Cloner 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Awesome little app!…

It has allowed me to backup partitions to an external FW drive. Also, when I got my new Ti PB, I put the new one in FW 'Target' mode, and ran CCC on the old one. After the new Ti wouldn't boot, but I just ran the OSX install CD as an 'update' and after, everything but printers was there and working. Really cool! [alert admin]

Excellent word processor...

Oh.... and I forgot to say why overall I gave it 4 instead of 5 start after such a glowing review. :o) Basically, 2.5 is yet too new for me to determine if some of the little bugs and things have been evicted from the early 2.x versions. I have had a few formatting glitches from time to time, and also issues with footnotes being pushed over page breaks making the app sluggish, etc. Not things I…
