BK Task Timer 4.0.14 (Mac OS X)
I am remiss in rating software unless I find something that I really like. Task Timer 4 is one such application and I'm so pleased with it that I'm posting this review at a number of software download sites that I use. For a number of years I've been looking for time-tracking software that fits my work environment: interruptions interrupting interruptions. (I work for a Navy IT organization.) I've evaluated about 25 to 30 time-tracking applications and when I recently downloaded and started testing Task Timer 4 it soon replaced the application that I had been getting by with since about 2005. (Up until now I hadn't found anything else I was satisfied with.) I need to track all my time and when the dust settles I often have to go back and reconstruct the different things I did over large blocks of time. With its Projects and Events views and features like adding, splitting, joining, and duplicating events, Task Timer has made this very easy for me to to do. Its ability to run timers concurrently or only one at a time is nice too. Its ability to view events for a particular day, month, or even year is very helpful when tracking the history of various issues or projects. The reporting feature is easy to use and, with its filters,is very customizable. This is saving me quite a bit of time on weekly timesheets and dealing with project issues. Along these lines its export features are pretty nice but it took me a little time to to realize that they need to be used via the Reports->Report Manager. Over all, I found this to be a very enjoyable, intuitive, and easy to use application that I started out just evaluating and found that it became very integral to my workflow before I realized it. The one problem that I did have was that the Navy does not allow Macs to be connected to its NMCI network so when I attempted to activate Task Timer I ran into the problem of not having an internet connection. I contacted the developer by email yesterday morning and before I left work that evening he had a new version of Task Timer that provided an alternate activation method. That is support that definitely exceeded my expectations. [alert admin]

TabletMagic 2.0b2 (Mac OS X)
It appears from both VersionTracker and the developer web site that ADB support has gone from "future version" to "not supported." Does this mean that the intent to develop an ADB version has been given up on? [alert admin]

I've used this ever since it came out and have yet to find something that works better for me. I've tried Project Timer Lite but while it had some nice additional features it was more cumbersome for the way I work and it frequently lost my data.I found the developer helpful and responsive but they could never resolve my problems with this and from the current state of Project Timer Lite it looks like they might have given up trying. I currently use Project Timer 1.4 2b3 under Mac OS 10.3.9 and as long as I keep the following things in mind it works fine for me. 1) Keep it closed until a time change is needed -- the longer its open the slower it gets. 2) Limit its records to one week's worth -- the more records the more sluggish it is. Every week I copy the records over to a monthy PT file. 3) When records get out of order go into the ones that have a blank activity column and just add a space. 4) Periodically edit the prefs file to get rid of extraneous categories that sometimes appear. Under normal circumstances I would give this three stars for the problems indicated above but becuase of its ease of use for the way I work compared to other applications in this category I'm giving it an additonal star. VueScan 8.3.31 (Mac OS X)
Agree with infocusf8 about developer.
A couple of years ago we tried the demo which worked fine so purchased a group license. Very shortly, thereafter we started having problems with the scans showing up as bands of colors. The developer's response was that we shell out the upgrade fee for the next ".1" release. When we indicated we didn't feel that was appropriate, he upped the upgrade price. He lost well over a $1,000 at the time with that action. [alert admin]

Macromedia ColdFusion MX 7.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Free Developer's Version is Quite Enjoyble
I've been using the free developer version of this over the past few months on Mac OS 10.3.9 to learn ColdFusion and its been quite enjoyable. I would like to give the developer's version a bunch of stars but I don't feel that I'm experienced enough yet to really be qualified to do so. The only problem I had was that, being a novice to web app development and the ins-and-outs of servers, I could not get ColdFusion to run based solely on on Macromedia's installation directions -- they weren't complete enough for me. For Mac OS X I’ve found the best installation instructions are at Community MX: "ColdFusion MX 7 on Macintosh OS X: Part 2." (Java 1.4.2 or better is needed):. http://www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?cid=C5ACC When I upgraded my version of MAMP (An free and easy to install application of MySQL, Apache, PHP, phpMyAdmin, etc.) ColdFusion could no longer connect to MySQL databases. I found that when using with MYSQL 4.1 or above the JDBC connector is needed and , in this case, Macromedia's instruction were sufficient to solve my problem: http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=6ef0253 I hope this was helpful to any other beginners out there. I tried this through a couple of iterations in various versions of Mac OS X. I could never get it to keep times and data reliably. Although it had some nice features that Project Timer 1.4.2 didn't have I found Project Timer to be more efficicent for my needs for basic time-tracking. I still use Project Timer 1.4.2 with Mac OS 10.3.9 but it gets bogged down if I leave it on too long or have a log that has over five days of entries. I really wish the developer would do some rework of Project Timer 1.4.2 to take care of its sluggishness and make that Project Timer Lite. [alert admin]

NoteTaker 1.9.6 (Mac OS X)
Currently I use NoteTaker mostly for web research and also find it useful for project and training notes. For the work that I do I find that its ability to create clipping services for copying and pasting selections into various notebooks (and pages within those notebooks) to be the most useful. Other features that I frequently use are its notebook indices, notebook libraries, and highlighting. On occasion I've created some web research notebooks and been able to pass them on to colleagues along with the NoteTaker Reader which has been really nice. However .... 1) This is one of those applications with such wide-ranging capabilities and possible uses that it demands some sort of user forum. I think Aquaminds is remiss is doing so since smaller companies (at least ones that seem to be smaller) are able to do so. 2) When notebooks become very large NoteTaker becomes abysmally slow. I've tried it on both a dual G5/2GHz and a G4/400MHz. A 53.7MB notebook is very slow when clipping to it on my G5 and a clipping to it on my G4 can be measured in minutes -- if the notebook can be opened at all. A 25MB notebook is sluggish on my G5 and more sluggish on my G4 but still generally workable if I'm patient. My workaround for the speed issue is to make a small clippings notebooks and then transfer them to larger notebooks. (I'm also considering upgrading my copy of StickyBrain as an alternative.) However, this takes away from the convenience of having clippings go directly to where I want them. I could break my notebooks down into smaller ones but then this gives me quite a few more files to search through and reduces the value of indexing to me. So, my rating of 4 is based on -1.5 for speed and -0.5 for the lack of a user forum which I think this product really needs to help users get the most out of it. I then added 1 back since 3 seemed unfair due to all to the features it has that I have not made use of ... yet. [alert admin]

jScriptEditX15 1.5.2 (Mac OS X)
Waiting to see where this goes
I'm not rating this because it has some potentially nice features but does not yet seem to me to be fully developed. Additionally, I was interrupted between the first time I looked at it and by the time I had a chance to go back the demo had expired. The main issue that I had in my brief encounter with jScriptEditX15 was that it would not open my existing JavaScript files and would not open files that it created and saved. This problem was exhibited with both drag-and-drop on the application icon and by using the File->Open menu item. This might have been a demo limitation but I didn't notice anything to indicate that. It would also be nice if the application interface was up to Mac standards but in the short time that I played with it the interface did not really get in my way. Until I see where this application goes I'm not in any hurry to give up BBEdit and pay a shareware fee for using it. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 7.0.0 (Mac OS X)
DRM Problems - Use With Caution
I downloaded and installed Reader 7.0 and lost the ability to open my DRM-protected files. Reader asked if I wanted to re-activate, gave me the choice to re-activate without Passport or Adobe ID (the option to re-activate using these was grayed out). Reader then gave me the error: "failed to load XML.XML .... contact customer support." I deleted all adobe related files (preferences, etc.), reinstalled and tried again with the same result. Unfortunately, Adobe's idea of customer support in this area is a forum where questions and problems may or may not be addressed. The lack of reliability in the implementation of Adobe's DRM and lack of support for assocuiated problems is one of the reasons I'm very much opposed to it and will not buy any DRM products in the future. Very Useful Brainstorming Tool ![]()

For the way I work Pyramid is an excellent brainstorming and design tool. I find the interface to be elegantly simple which allows me to set down ideas and then make connections between them without the application getting in my way. There are some features that I would like to see added such as universal find & replace, a drawing/link tool that allows for designating things like secondary relationships, and the ability to use element boxes as links to other layers/sheets. However, even without these, Pyramid is one of my more valued applications. Thanks, MindCad, I really enjoy your product! [alert admin]

Upon reflection concerning Bruce's erroneous assumptions, perhaps I should clarify further. The issue is not so much the quality of the product, a lot of people use it and like it, so I did not post any negative ratings, only my comment. The problem we had with the developer was that we went through his documentation, tried the fixes that were suggested, including those for the ini, plus some other things to no avail. When…

Oh, by the way, the only help offered by the developer was that we should send him more money for the 0.1 upgrade.

Wasn't an ini problem - your solution and a number of others we tried didn't work. The amount of money refers to additional licenses and renewals.

I was interested in trying out this program until I found out that it needs to validate registration code for each session. I've paid shareware fees and then seen developer shut down business too many times to be willing to rely on this method of verification. I bought a license for Digest Viewer which I use quite a bit and if it had used this method it would have been disabled for the past…
