Apple iTunes 9.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Podcast Playlist Sync Still Broken ![]()

Although the ReadMe hints that this might be fixed, it is not. As soon as a podcast is added to a playlist, it ceases to be visible in the list of playlists that sync with my iPod. And as soon as any podcast "contaminates" any playlist, it no longer appears on the iPod after a sync operation. Prior to iTunes v9.0, this worked very well. I only went to version 9 because the iTunes Store forced me into it (would not let me complete a purchase without it). Now I regret letting it bully me into making the transition. [alert admin]

Eudora 8.0.0b1 (Mac OS X)
A Question: Does it retain Eudora's File/Attachment methods
After a decade of using Eudora, I'm convinced that one of the features that sets Eudora apart from the "modern" E-mailers is the way it handles mailboxes (each mailbox a separate file), and attachments (which are saved as discrete, relocatable files). This in stark contrast with other E-mailers that store all messages and attachments in one big (and ever-growing) database. So, before I take the plunge, I must know: How are files/mailboxes handled in this new E-mailer (I'm not yet ready to call it Eudora)? Thank you. [alert admin]

Eudora 6.2.4 (Mac OS X)
What is different in 6.2.4 vs. 6.2.3?
Can someone succinctly provide the difference between the (release version) 6.2.4 over 6.2.3? I tried to wade through the release notes, but they were written for a different audience (beta testers). I'm happy with 6.2.3, and hate to make changes ("leave well enough alone") unless there's a real "pay-off" in doing so. So, fellow Eudoraphiles, what's new here? Thank you. [alert admin]

iPartition 1.5.5 (Mac OS X)

This iPartition has been an enormous time saver, and has never caused me any problems. I've used it over a dozen times on various drives, and it has worked exactly as it should. Okay, I wish it was faster, but I can't blame the software for the time it takes to move many GB of data around on the same drive spindle (the limiting factor is the drive). The GUI is very good at showing you logically and physically where the data is. My only wish-list item would be for an indication of how long something will take, so I can plan ahead (you don't want to stop an operation once it is in progress). [alert admin]

Macromedia Flash Player 8.0.24 (Mac OS X)
It would be nice (to put it mildly) if the purveyors of software updaters actually told us what's new. This way, we could make an informed decision as to whether the update is useful in our particular situation -- or not! [alert admin]

Psst! 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)
Yesterday, when I downloaded "version 3.0.3" I got version 3.0.2 Today, when I downloaded "version 3.0.3" I got version 3.0.4 The History file that came with both stops at version 2.0.2 It would be very helpful if the confusion were addressed by VersionTracker and MistaTree Thank you. [alert admin]

MenuMeters 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)
Problems with Mac OS X 10.4.3 ("Me Too")
You can add me to the list of people who have had problems with 10.4.3. At first I noticed that the Network menu wasn't updating (it was hung at zero/zero for Tx/Rx). When I moused down on it, nothing happened (I didn't the the drop-down that indicated what the interfaces were doing). Finally, I uncheked the "Display Network Menu Meter" in the preferences, and got a sheet that said, "Menu Extra Could Not Load // For instructions on enabling third-party menu extras please see the documentation." I've never seen this error message before, and logging out and back in made only a temporary difference (ditto for logging out and back in with shift-key held to suppress Login Items). I am convinced that this latest version of the OS has broken some aspect of Menu Meters. [alert admin]

Launchd Editor 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Possible Bug in Launchd Editor
It's happened two out of two times (the statistics aren't great, but a trend is indicated). Launchd (under 10.4.3) property list that ran fine initially, starts to "go haywire" when niced by Launchd Editor. One plist was for a cron-like process, the other of the watched-folder variety. In both cases, they were well-behaived, but I decided to maximize their "niceness" (slider in Launchd Editor slid to the far right). And in both cases, as soon as they were re-loaded and re-triggered (based on their respective criteria), the processes ran, and restarted, and ran again, and again, and again, and repeated this infinitely... until I unloaded them (I noticed the problem in each case when the pegged CPU got hot enough to trigger my PowerBook's fan). Maybe it's a bug in launchd, or your editor. I don't know. Since my two situations both involve commands that can be niced from within, I've elected to go that route. It's a good start, but it feels more like a beta release than something numbered v1.0.1 (however, I did pay my $5 shareware fee, so I'm "betting" on it turning out very good). [alert admin]

PorDiBle 3.2 (Mac OS X)
New Version Lost DOC to TEXT Conversion ![]()

I've been using PorDiBle for quite some time, and just tried this new version. It works as well as before (even better since you don't have to type the file name base/root into the dialog box anymore). However, and this is a big one, the conversion from DOC (.pdb) back to text seems to have stopped working. Is anyone having success with this? Using Mac OS X 10.4.3 on PowerBook G4 (15" Aluminum) Thank you. [alert admin]

You might want to try out Burn, found elsewhere on VersionTracker and described as a freeware "application to burn most common disks: data disks, audio disks (mp3, audio cd), video disks (VCD, SVCD, DVD-Video, DivX), images and disk copy. Burn makes it easy for everyone to burn."
I've tried it and it works.

The History file for the most recent update (v1.3) answers the question: There was an incompatibility with Cisco VPN, which I use for all un-wired networking. I had to update to the current Cisco VPN when I made the jump to Mac OS X 10.4. The changes were simultaneous, and I incorrectly ascribed the conflict as being between MenuMeters and the new Mac OS, when in fact the conflict was between MenuMeters and…

Your point about the utility of the statup chime is noted. However, it is completely inappropriate for you to declare Psst! "useless" unless you use your computer the way everybody else does. The last thing in the world I want is to draw attention to my computer use in a meeting, and I would gladly accept a computer operating imperfectly in exchange for the assured silence that Psst! provides. I use a…

I appreciate the suggestion, however I have no other menu modifiers installed (and made no other system changes surrounding my jump from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3). I've got another clue to the puzzle, which I will post in a new item (since comments tend to get buried).

I appreciate the feedback. I did remove the prefs. file, but it made no difference. I could see that the application was launching (based on the expanding icon / visual feedback), but nothing resulted. Nothing showed in the Dock, menu bar, etc. Noting showed in a ps list from the Terminal. No new prefs. file was created. I suspect that the application never completely loaded (so no crash log…

Is your brightness set to track with ambient brightness? Are you working with a single/point light source; is the shadow of your hand passing over the speaker grille (where the sensors are located)? Just a thought?

No problem downloading it when you CTL-click (or right-click) and select "Download linked file as..." (or the equivalent) from the resulting pop-up (users " Barryaus" and "pemery" take note).
