VersionTracker Pro 4.5.1b4 (Mac OS X)

Still Broken

I posted a review a few months back stating my concerns for VT Pro. It takes a fiscal year to scan for updates. I used to love this software, but it's easier, quicker and cheaper to go to the website and manually check for updates; which the first two were all the things that made this program useful. I recently bought a new Mac Pro with eight 2.8 GHz, 64-bit cores, and 10 gigs of RAM. When running VT Pro, it slams one processor and still takes an eternity to look for updates. It is disheartening to see the other seven processors at idle, one at 100%, and the program stalled. I'm not a programmer, but I know that this program is not multi-processor aware. I also know that I've been waiting almost half of my current subscription for an update that addresses all my concerns about this once-great software. Don't give me the line, "That's what happens when you update operating systems" because Versiontracker is all about updating. If it can't keep up with the updates, they need to stop the subscription idea. UNLESS I GET A REFUND, I WILL NOT RENEW MY SUBSCRIPTION. This is a very poor product now and I advise anyone to not subscribe to it. This product has been broken since Leopard's release in October. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.5 (Mac OS X)

4.5 Doesn't Work on 10.5

I've been waiting for a fix to VT 4.5 since November. I haven't been able to use it since upgrading to Leopard. I have three Macs with Leopard on them and all three don't work. I have a Powerbook, a Quicksilver, and an Intel Mac Mini AND ALL THREE CAN'T RUN VERSIONTRACKER PRO 4.5! All the computers take forever to launch the app now and it spends eternity (I let it run for 24 hours) scanning the disks. The app never stops and never updates. It wouldn't bother me so much if this was a normal application that you purchase it, use it, and if it doesn't run, I either don't use it or I buy the newer version. But, because it's subscription-based, every day it doesn't work, is a day my money is wasted. I WILL NOT renew this subscription if they don't backdate my current subscription and quickly fix the VT Pro software. What kills me is that my subscription recently renewed, so I haven't had a working product since paying for it. It would be the equivalent of purchasing something that doesn't work, and hope that an updated version will fix it so you can use it, but if it doesn't come within a year, you've paid for a broken product. If it doesn't work, why pay for it when I can use the FREE website and individually check for updates (like I'm doing now). For anyone thinking about subscribing, take note of what I just wrote before paying the subscription fee. I'll post something else if the VersionTracker team makes this good. [alert admin]

Griffin PowerMate X 2.0b20 (Mac OS X)

No Global

I haven't seen a product eliminate features on a new release since I had OS 9 as my primary boot OS... WOW! They totally left out the global option and there's no way to remove applications, nor add the Finder as an application (this is where you'd hear the sad Bruce Banner music playing in the background). Try to delete the SECOND DVD application in the sidebar, and viola, it stays, because there's no way to delete it using the backspace or delete keys, or using the (missing) minus icon next to the plus icon. Simply put, this update stinks on ice! Anyone know where to get the older version? [alert admin]

RapidWeaver 3.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Rollover Graphic Prevents Export

Believe it or not, I don't have problems uploading via FTP, however I have problems submitting a bug report on the developer's website. Hopefully, someone there gets this, so I can buy the product. RW is exactly what I was looking for... the ease of iWeb with a few more features, but not in a $300 Dreamweaver package. Here's the problem: "button_over copy.png" buried deep in the rw_common forder won't upload to my server because of the space in the filename. I can manually fix it, so it's not a showstopper, but it would be real nice if the program would do it on it's own. That's it! Great product and kudos to the developer. Dan [alert admin]

DVD2oneX 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)

EXPENSIVE, But works...

Holy Bill Gates, Batman! It's 49.99 Euro-dollars (that's $63.76 in Uncle Sam money). But, it does EXACTLY what I needed it to do. I had a VIDEO_TS folder that was 5.5 GB and this dropped the thing within the burnable 4.7 GB section on the DVD. I had sticker shock and refused to pay so much for something so easy until I found out through lots of research, this is the only thing out there for Mac OS X. Oh well, it's like paying $1000 for a teaspoon of water... in the desert. The only problem I encountered and I'm not even sure if it was this program, is a few "hiccups" or "freezes" within the first 2 minutes of video. After that, it was smooth sailing. If I use it again, it'll pay for itself. [alert admin]

Keyspan Digital Media Remote 1.7b4 (Mac OS X)

Woowee!

FINALLY, after much complaining to Keyspan, they finally fixed the volume controls. Back to 5-stars for fixing the problem. This little device is killer when combined with QuicKeys X. I'm loving it again (all over again). Thanks Keyspan for restoring my faith. [alert admin]

Ollie's Tab 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Won't Install

The installer can't find the folder "Safari 1.2/Contents". I really want this little gem. I never use the 'text size' buttons but use tabs and printing all the time. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2004 11.0 (Mac OS X)

Entourage Looks Softer

I was hoping that Microsoft would have some long-awaited changes. It looks nearly identical to v.X, and there are a few new things, but for the most part, nothing I'd use outside a corporate sector. I don't think I'll upgrade to Office 2004. v.X is still doing what I need it to do and what I want it to do is in neither version. I loved the rules manager from Outlook for Windows. I like the fact that I could have a specific sound file play or a change the color of messages when a particular event occurred. You need to know applescripting to accomplish this. I want to waste my time on a game, not applescripting. [alert admin]

HandBrake 0.6.1 (Mac OS X)

It's Here...

I finally found a DVD-ripper that works the way you'd expect. I was actually expecting disappointment after 4 hours but, when I opened the file, I was AMAZED! The video started and ended at the spot it was supposed to and the video/audio matched and was DVD-quality. It's so nice to plug in a DVD and and go away, come back and have the video already in the destination format. I can't even do that with my Hollywood Bridge. OUTSTANDING software! For anyone looking for a DVD copier, this is not it. This takes the movie and makes a file from it so you can use a program like Movie Jukebox to view them, instead of popping DVDs in and out of your computer. [alert admin]
