Default Folder X 4.0.6 (Mac OS X)
To those of you that are having problems with InDesign, please note that there are documented issues with InDesign and Leopard. Using DFX may make these crashes more or less likely, but I'm afraid there's little I can do about them (I might be able to work around them if I could reproduce them here, but I've been unable to). Default Folder X 4.0.4 (Mac OS X)
Decadence - I've replied before to clarify things, but you persist with the same misinformation, so I guess I'll just keep replying. (For those of you who are new to this exchange, I'm replying to the complaints of a user named 'decadence', which you can read below). First, yes, I'll be the first to admit that Default Folder X isn't perfect. It's had bugs, and I've tried to act quickly to fix them, once I've been able to reproduce the problems and isolate the causes. Some problems aren't found during beta testing - especially long-term performance issues or problems that only occur infrequently or with specific applications or configurations - so I have to fix them after a user reports them. I'm not at all happy with this, but given the nature of the way DFX, OS X, and software in general work, it's been unavoidable thus far. Now as far as specific issues go: 1. I don't know why one of your posts was deleted. I had nothing to do with that, and I don't believe that VersionTracker would delete a post even if I asked them to. I'd appreciate it if you'd stop insisting that I'm somehow out to deceive you or anyone else, or am doing something underhanded. I'm not. I write software for a living, and have been running St. Clair Software and doing that for 20 years - I understand the value of trust and relationships with my customers. 2. I have not "vehemently denied" your or anyone else's bug reports. If you look back at my posts, you'll see that I've never told anyone that what they're reporting isn't happening. What I have said is that I can't reproduce a problem on any of the machines I have here, or haven't seen a particular issue before. I have asked people to report their bugs to me, rather than (or in addition to) posting on VersionTracker, where I may or may not see them and where I have no means of corresponding with them to get additional information. If I can't reproduce a bug, I ask for more info - it's difficult to fix a problem if I've never seen it occur. And it's impossible to confirm that I've fixed it if I can't reproduce the problem or can't send new software to a person that does have the problem. And I'm not posting this reply because I'm somehow out to get you. I'm trying to clarify what I see as your misperception about what I do and what I care about. I run a small software company. The reason it's small is because I don't farm out tech support - I do it myself. I'm spending time answering questions and paying attention to users' problems instead of hiring a bunch of people that don't know much about my software and don't care as much as I do. That means I write a lot less code, but my customers are generally happy (you being one of the big exceptions, unfortunately) and that if I make mistakes or bugs are uncovered (in my software or in others) I can fix or work around them quickly and keep everyone running smoothly. And that's my 2 cents. Now back to work... [alert admin]

Default Folder X 4.0.4 (Mac OS X)
"Designer-black" is optional, and 4.0.x has a lot of internal improvements
richpate: Then new appearance is optional - you can use the old-style gray appearance by changing your prefs in your Default Folder X settings. More importantly, version 4 has some major compatibility and performance improvements that make it more desirable to use than 3.0.6. - Jon [alert admin]

Default Folder X 4.0.3 (Mac OS X)
Version 4.0.3 corrects iliketrash's CPU usage problem (below) along with several other issues. I'd like to encourage everyone to update to the new version. If you've already purchased a license or upgrade for version 4, updating to version 4.0.3 is free. [alert admin]

Default Folder X 2.5a6 (Mac OS X)
Folks - if you have a problem with Default Folder X crashing, or causing anything else to crash, contact us. Every one of these incidents I've seen (though there aren't many reported) has been due to a corrupted DFX preference file. There are instructions in the FAQ for dealing with this - see http://www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX/faq.html#troubleshooting.
And before you say "well, why don't you fix this?" let me assure you that Default Folder X does do a lot of "sanity checking" of its preferences. Unfortunately, there are obviously cases that are getting by - the trouble seems to be with corrupt alias records, which are very difficult to detect.
At any rate, if you're having a problem, contact us at support@stclairsoft.com. We usually manage to resolve users' problems quickly.

Default Folder X 1.9.6b4 (Mac OS X)
Hey beni2 - care to contact us and provide some data? All of our testers report that the bug is indeed fixed, and we've had no tech support email since the b4 release indicating otherwise. Please get in touch with us at http://www.stclairsoft.com/Main/support_request.html. If you (or someone still having problems) doesn't give us something to work with, we can't fix it! It works under all circumstances we've been able to test.

Default Folder X 1.9.5 (Mac OS X)
Renaming files, fixing crashes
jonsaw: While DFX doesn't have the ability to copy and move files (yet), you can easily rename files with the Get Info or Rename commands in DFX's utility menu.
jamin: If DFX is causing anything to crash, you've most likely got a damaged DFX preference file. Please see the instructions in the Default Folder X FAQ at http://www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX/faq.html for correcting this.

Default Folder X 1.9.3 (Mac OS X)
Folks - if Default Folder X appears to be causing problems, you have to let us know! VersionTracker is not the place to post bug reports - if you send them to us at support@stclairsoft.com, I'll see that they are addressed. Posting here that "Default Folder X crashes" doesn't get it fixed. It doesn't crash on our machines or our testers' machines, so without a crash log from your system, we've got nothing to work with. Also, check the FAQ on our web site. 95% of the crashes that do occur (and they're pretty infrequent these days) are due to a damaged preference file or some other problem that's very simply fixed.

Default Folder X 1.9.2 (Mac OS X)
Favorites problem is fixed in 1.9.2
Skoops - the problem with certain Favorites crashing DFX should be fixed in 1.9.2. It's not related to Panther, it was a bug in DFX 1.9.1.

There must be some sort of network hiccup between here and there. St. Clair Software's alive and well and the web site's up and running at http://www.stclairsoft.com/.

I'm afraid I still don't know what the problem is - I've used your test file and am testing the same version of InDesign, same system version, and same Mac model, and it doesn't happen. Can anyone else reproduce this problem?

As always, please report bugs to support@stclairsoft.com - it's pretty tough to provide help or fix the problem if we have no way of contacting you and no way of reproducing the problem. The only issue I'm aware of with InDesign is a single report of a conflict with a plug-in called "Cross References for InDesign/InCopy." It somehow causes a crash if and only if you've got it installed and have the Links palette open…

One thing that struck me just now: I use DFX myself, of course, and use it pretty heavily. I reboot my machine about once every 2 weeks, and then usually just because I need to boot back into Tiger to check on a bug report. Granted, I'm running Leopard instead of Tiger most of the time (I think you're using 10.4, right?) but I push things pretty hard and OS X and Default…

Thanks for your comments. As I've said before, the instability you've experienced hasn't been the norm - I get a report every now and then about problems with an application crashing, but those are very few and far between. The big issues with making a Lite version are: 1. What features would I include? In the few requests I've gotten for a Lite version, the "required features" have always been different (though…

My apologies. The download page for the released version of DFX 4.0 displays a warning message, letting you know that the upgrade costs money if you purchased your old copy of DFX before June 1, 2007. Unfortunately, the beta page didn't show that - it's been fixed now. - Jon

Please contact us at support@stclairsoft.com. I suspect the problem isn't Default Folder X since, as a regular user-level application, it shouldn't have the capability of crashing the whole system unless it's triggering some bug in OS X itself. Since it's not running as administrator, it doesn't have access to any system-level resources and thus should never be able to destabilize the system as a whole (that's the theory anyway). At any rate,…

Please give the 4.0.1 beta a try. There's an alternate, non-HUD look, and stability is worlds better under 10.4.x (where there was definitely a problem because it used QuickTime to generate previews, and several QuickTime plug-ins crashed or used ridiculous amounts of memory).

Any stability problems that you had should be fixed in version 4.0.1b1. The big issue was Default Folder X's use of QuickTime to generate its previews under Tiger - that's now been separated into a separate preview server that handles all the QuickTime issues without taking down DFX. The only way I was able to get DFX 4.0 to freeze a system was to queue up a whole bunch of previews of very…

Decadence - I'm sorry to hear you've given up on DFX. I'd appreciate it if you could send a couple of crash logs to me at support@stclairsoft.com so I can fix whatever problems you've encountered. I haven't had anyone else report such horrible crashes or lock-ups, so I have no way of fixing whatever you encountered without some data from you. Whole system lock-ups are of particular concern because, as a non-kernel-level application,…
