Apple QuickTime 7.4.5 (Mac OS X)

No video with mp4 files not fixed

As has been discussed on Apple's Web site, as well as here on MacFixit, many users who upgraded to Quicktime 7.4 lost the ability to view mp4 video files - only the audio content would play. Unfortunately, this problem has not been addressed with v7.4.5. For the people who will invariably chime in with "Just use VLC" - we know. Using VLC doesn't change the fact that Quicktime is broken and no longer works as it should (and previously did). [alert admin]

DVDTheque 2.9.2 (Mac OS X)

How do you pronounce DVDTheque?

Sorry for the (possibly) stupid question, but I'm actually serious. Is it pronounced "DVD the Q", or "DVD Theque" like "check" or something else entirely? Help! [alert admin]

VLC media player 0.8.6a (Mac OS X)

Poor mkv performance

I've been a happy user of VLC for several years, but have had issues with dropped frames and unexpected crashes when playing HD mkv files. This happens on both my 20" iMac 2ghz and my G5 Quad 2.5ghz. This happens with 720 and 1080 format HD files. Seeing as HD is here to stay, I'm troubled by this. MPlayer has performed perfectly on video files that VLC has choked on. I hope the developers will look into this and give HD playback top priority. [alert admin]

Idiot's Delight 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)

Fun!

Simple, yet addictive - I find the game most enjoyable! I agree that the game needs an undo feature, as the cards are a bit unresponsive to clicks sometimes. [alert admin]

DivX for Mac 6.5 (Mac OS X)

Truly awful performance

I've been using DiVX Pro as a QT plug-in for a while and it's performed adequately in most intances (but not nearly as well as VLC and MPlayer). However, I've just tried viewing several movies with the new DiVX Player, and if the app doesn't crash outright, it plays very poorly with extreme choppiness and sync issues. I wonder why 3rd party developers can "get it right", yet the creator of the actual codec can't? Baffling...Tom [alert admin]

Reckless Driving 1.52 (Mac OS X)

Odd car behavior

I love this game, and have been playing it for quite a while. That being said, there's one slightly annoying glitch that has always bugged me. After demolishing another car (or even just running into one), that car seems to "stick" to your car. It slows you way down (troublesome if there's a cop on your tail!) and the only way to break free is to completely drive around the offending car. I was hoping the game's graphics engine could be altered so that opposing cars spin off out of the way more readily after a collision. But keep up the great work - the game is a LOT of fun! Paparazzi! 0.2.3 (Mac OS X)

"Save As" button does nothing?

Clicking the "Save As" button doesn't seem to do anything. Maybe a picture is being stored somewhere, but I can't find it. Any clues? Also, I tried dragging the preview to the desktop, but it results in an empty picture clipping. Hmm... [alert admin]

Firefox 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Difference between this and "nightly builds"?

Sorry for the possibly stupid question, but what's the difference between using the "release" version of Firefox (1.0.4, for example), and downloading the "nightly build" releases of Firefox? Are they maintained by different developers and/or groups? Are there significant contrasts in features or reliability? Just wondering, and thanks for any help. Tom [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.3.6 (Mac OS X)

Odd Safari behavior

I've always used the Gibson guitar Web site as a "test" area for Safari, as it contains Javascript that's never worked right, although it's fine with Firefox and IE (the drop down menus are impossible to navigate). After updating with all the proper permissions repairing before and after, the site doesn't load ,at all. Can someone confirm that I'm not losing my mind? www.gibson.com [alert admin]

Myst IV Revelation 1.01 (Mac OS X)

Won't upgrade here either

While I certainly appreciate the info on how to (maybe) get this to work, I'm not going to downgrade my System to 10.3 and do a fresh 7 gigabyte install of Myst to do it. I'll bet that the developer is aware of the problem and will issue a fix shortly. [alert admin]

MacNFO Viewer

TextEdit doesn't read ASCI artwork which almost all nfo files contain, not to mention other non-compatible formatting. Not too difficult for you to understand, I hope.

dead issue

You've made a commentary, not a review. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but to give a product a bad rating because you prefer a competitor's isn't what the rating system is designed for. FWIW.

1.05 and 10.4.4

v1.05 appears to be FUBAR for recent version of Tiger. My screen also goes blank and I cannot continue. Fortunately, it appears that v1.04 is still available on GraphSim's Web site and it seems to work. Pretty crummy support, just the same.

Useless

Did you actually try this, or are you assuming that muting your Mac's sound will eliminate the startup chime? Guess what - it won't. Running Tiger, the startup chime is completely independent from your Mac's other volume settings, muted or not. Your remarks are baseless.

One word...MUTE

Unfortunately, with current systems, changing your Mac's volume or using the mute feature has no effect on the startup chime's volume (Tiger w/iMac G5 pre-Front Row). It's independent from the rest of the Mac's audio output.

Version?

I see the same thing. In fact, the updater's creation date is the day before the previous v4.3.1 updater. Something's amiss here.

The description says "segmented files"

JUrsaMaj is actually correct in his definition. "Segmented" usually refers to Stuffit segments, while files are "split" with Split & Concat (Mac), hjsplit and Mastersplitter (Windows). The two are very different and not interchangeable. The description should be changed to mention that this app joins split files, not segmented ones.

"Save As" button does nothing?

Update - For my home page, I have created an HTML file with a list of my favorite Wed sites. This is stored locally and may be the reason that Paparazzi wouldn't work with it. But it's odd that a preview is shown, yet no image can be saved. I tried using VersionTracker's page, and Paparazzi worked fine.
