Apple Boot Camp 2.1 (Mac OS X)

run the Apple Software Update in Windows

You may have missed this near the top of the page... "run the Apple Software Update in Windows" You update from your Win partition, not from the Mac OSX side. [alert admin]

LogitechLCDTool 0.7b (Mac OS X)

Agreed

Anyone who provides support for Logitech anything on a Mac is a hero. I'm just glad that my basic two-button/scrollwheel mouse works without the Logitech "driver". [alert admin]

I smell a troll...

Folks: When you spot a troll--one who posts to inflame--don't bother with the not helpful button. Click on the admin alert button, type the word troll and send it along. The admin alert button will also provide a link to the submissions guidelines. I'm guessing that a recent poster has broken more that a few guidelines. [alert admin]

VLC RAR-Loader 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Basic fuctionality is there

I could not get droplet launching to work (drag a rar segment to the RAR-Loader icon in the dock). If I launch RAR-Loader and open a rar segment then I am fine. Once playing video, I can't scrub to another portion of the video. The VLC controller seems to be limited to pause toggle only. Playlist functionality is also missing. Thus, I can't load a "2-CD" video for seamless playback. Summary: RARs are obsolete. High-speed internet means no need to split files for download. Video compression (AVI, MPEG, etc.) means no benefit from further compression. This add-on eliminates a bit of the pointless un-raring, but is still beta quality. Marginal thumbs up. I'm running VLC 0.8.2 in OSX 10.3.9. [alert admin]

Apple Broadband Tuner 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Says I can't install...

Says I can't install, but doesn't say why. I'm running 10.3.9. Are there other requirements? If so, the Apple site doesn't say so. I'll try Software Update to see if some "security" update is what is holding me back. [alert admin]

pearLyrics 0.5 (Mac OS X)

This app is getting close...

Modified artist names seem to throw pearLyrics for a loop. Examples include: The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Elvis Costello & The Attractions and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Songs for Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Costello or Tom Petty are found with no problem. Disguise the artist just a little bit and it's usually not found or the wrong lyrics. Perhaps the parser can be tweaked to overcome this? I'd prefer not to have to simplify all of my artist names as a workaround. [alert admin]

MozoDojo 1.1 (Mac OS X)

For a quality mosaic...

For a quality mosaic, you need a huge number of pictures for the program to work with. I'll make the obvious suggestion to add web search terms to the program. This, literally, adds a world pf pictures to your mosaic. [alert admin]

Blades of Avernum 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Turn-based gaming system

No problems with the update. BoA is a wonderful, retro, turn-based gaming system. It comes with 4 scenarios, plus you can write your own scenarios and/or play those written by others. It is currently available for Windows. [alert admin]

Nonsense

I just installed the latest version, I had no problem ignoring the upgrade buttons on the final screen of the installer. It's freeware. There's no nagging in use. It's transparent to the user. It just works. This, plus Perian, is all that a Mac user needs to handle the Windowfied world wide web. Cost to me, for both? Zero.

Sneaking, schmeaking

I guess I read. It's always wise to check the custom install options. I sometimes save disk space by opting out of part of the installer. I sometimes see wanted extras that are not installed by default. As for why Silverlight might be needed... Netflix streaming would be why I have it installed. As for why this installer defaults to installing it... Flip4Mac aims to be "one stop shopping" for Windows media playback. Unfortunately, Microsoft has locked up a…

Yes, it is

The vast majority of us don't need export functionality. We will never pay to upgrade. That leaves us with a marvelous PIECE of free software. It's not even nagware. It just works.

Combo update is 669 MB in size

Two things: 1. A combo update is not a "bug fix" or delta update. It will update any version from 10.5.0 thru 10.5.6 >TO> 10.5.7 (for ex.) That's a lot of changes in one file. There are advantages to the combo update method, but a delta is also available. 2. Any modern operating system REQUIRES broadband, whether it is marketed that way, or not. Windows more so than Mac. If that last sentence makes no sense, then…

Defrag now more likely to be necessary

Valid comments, but keep in mind changing usage by many Mac users. Video files are not just for video professionals any more. Camcorder transfers, DVD rips and iTunes Store purchases are more and more common on the average user's HD. Files over 20MB are the "big" files which Apple's built-in anti-fragmentation functionality has problems with. I have one direcory with 40 files bigger than that, and I'm no video nut. Also, a little fragmentation begats more…

No doze Mac

Just set computer sleep to "never" in the Energy Saver pane. Your display will still sleep independently. BTW: Don't ask the developer any questions. He's not that user-friendly. His apps, more so.
