TinkerTool System 2.0 (Mac OS X)
Indeed it is unfortunate that Dr. Bresink does not offer upgrade pricing to version 1 customers. [alert admin]

iClock Pro 1.0b16 (Mac OS X)
I used iClock in the past. Eventually I replaced it with You Control. I've already rated this a month ago so I won't do that again, but it's odd to see buggy beta software being rated with 5 stars. From what I've seen, the reviewers have not rated any other software, with the exception of Copy Paste by the same company which was also given the questionable 5 stars. [alert admin]

DEVONthink Pro Office 2.0pb4 (Mac OS X)
I don't frequent VT that much these days, and was surprised to find such low ratings for DTPO. I began using DEVONthink Pro in 2005, and when the Office version was released I upgraded. I would not compare it to Spotlight, since it does much more. There are a few screencasts showing DTPO's capabilities, as well as a manual and a very useful forum, not to mention their responsive customer support. I usually would not rate a beta version, but my rating reflects my overall experience with DT, including the latest beta. [alert admin]

RapidWeaver 4.2.1 (Mac OS X)
VersionTracker should update RW's price ![]()

It's no longer $49.95, but $79. A near 60% increase in price. Of course, the price is for RapidWeaver itself, without taking into account additional expenses for Themes, Plugins, and other Add-ons. At $79, two superb alternatives are Sandvox Pro or Freeway Express. RW is certainly better than iWeb, but that's not a difficult accomplishment. Although I have licenses for RW 3 and 4 since it came bundled with other programs, it is definitely not something I would buy for $79. I would not even pay $50 for RW. No wonder it's often offered as part of bundled packages. Sandvox is more tempting, especially with the current 20% off sale from Dec 10 to Dec 24. A recent review: http://www.softwareeditorial.com/InternetWebDesignMac/ksandvox.html A review of an older version of Sandvox: http://www.it-enquirer.com/main/ite/more/iweb_vs_sandvox/ One of the best things about RW is the community, but I'm disappointed with the software itself and their customer support. iClip 4 (Mac OS X)
Back in February of 2007 I said: "Perhaps a future release will redeem iClip, but as it is right now, version 4 does not even deserve the same name as version 3. Hopefully we won’t have to wait over a year for the next great release. This could really be a great application, worthy of 5 stars." 22 months later it's still the same initial version 4 release. Over hyped, overpriced, and with poor support. I guess that Macheist is more profitable so improving iClip 4 has not been a priority. [alert admin]

Billings 3.0.3 (Mac OS X)
Recently I tried Billings 3, but decided not to upgrade. Today I downloaded version 3.0.3 to see whether this version was finally worth it, and got a message saying that my trial had expired. Although I could not run the program, I visited their forums and apparently this version is still buggy. In addition, trying to run my previous version now gives me the following message: "Your Billings database has been used with a newer version of Billings. Visit www.marketcircle.com to download the newest version." The only positive aspect I've seen is that the upgrade price has been lowered from $35 to $25. I would rather give my money to a different developer. [alert admin]

OmniGraffle Pro 5.0.1 beta 1 (Mac OS X)
Hopefully one of these beta versions will fix the price bug. I find it hard to believe that OMNI charged so much not only for this upgrade, but also for programs such as Omni Plan and Omni Focus. I own both of these as well, and prefer Merlin 2 and Thinking Rock 2. I bought these Omni programs in part to show my support for the company, and this was prior to the Omni Graffle pricing fiasco. To me these Omni programs are not a good value given their prices and features, and competing products have been a better choice for me. I seldom use OmniWeb, which I think was the first Omni product I purchased many years ago, and use FireFox or Safari these days. But at one point OmniWeb was my favorite browser. And I didn't mind paying for it. It was worth it. I used to love Omni as a company, and the support ninjas are amazing 99.9% of the time. But I'll keep on using OmniGraffle 4 until it no longer works for my needs and/or I find a replacement. I'm certainly not upgrading my Omni software if things continue this way. Just my feedback. Microsoft Office 2008 12.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Lack of VBA support was announced in August of 2006 ![]()

Here's a thorough explanation, as well as a request for feedback: http://www.schwieb.com/blog/2006/08/08/saying-goodbye-to-visual-basic/ While I don't like that VBA was taken out, it was announced well in advance. http://www.macworld.com/article/54320/2006/12/microsoft.html http://www.macwindows.com/office2008.html I do wish that launching the applications was faster. Other than that, it has behaved pretty much as expected. [alert admin]

Disco 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)
Why shouldn't I listen to tcloer?
With all due respect NeoX, tcloer makes some very good points, for example regarding Disco's hype, having Toast for breakfast, and being an alternative to Toast. I don't care that much if Disco uses X or Y technology. I do care if the software lives up to its promise. Disco certainly has failed me. I've used it since the first beta versions became available and Disco was much cheaper. I always went back to Toast. Finally, after almost 1 year, some of the old bugs have been addressed. I'm sure that many people will enjoy Disco. Many will find the $29 price fair. But others are certainly entitled to post their opinions. jreffner, if you wanted something cheaper than Toast, Burn is actually free. Also, Toast can be found relatively cheap since from time to time there are frequently offers and rebates available. [alert admin]

TinkerTool System 1.8 (Mac OS X)
I’ve used TTS for a few years and consider it an essential part of my Mac. While some of its functionality is available in other programs for free, TTS integrates a lot of features in a well designed package and the price is fairly cheap. I don’t recall ever having a problem due to using TTS. I did contact the author once with a question and he provided a quick response. Overall I’m very happy with TTS. [alert admin]

Actually, the original OS X was not an improvement. It was better than the beta, but it was far from being good. Neither was 10.5 until 10.5.3 or 10.5.4. The first releases were extremely buggy.

First, let me tell you that I enjoy your posts. You spend the time to provide factual comments and I appreciate that. In this case, however, I disagree with your post. I even tried the "Replace All" exercise you suggested, and Word performed flawlessly using a 143-page document. I was actually impressed by Word's speed. My initial experience with Office 2008 was less than stellar. After having problems with other applications as well as with Office 2008,…

If you're going to compare it to Office do a bit more research. -Upgrading from iWork 05, to 06, to 07, to 08, to 09 would have been more expensive than upgrading Office 2004 to Office 2008. -Many people upgraded Office for around $30 (Thirty "freaking dollars") thanks to Microsoft's offers and rebates. In addition, they gave the buyer the choice of Office version they wanted; Student, Special Media, or Regular edition. IIRC, the Home/Student version included…

As much as I like you and the Omni Group, this upgrade fee is excessive. I don't recall people complaining about an Omni upgrade prior to this one. Perhaps the exception has been OMNIWeb, since most browsers are free, but other than that I think that your customers have accepted previous upgrades fees which have been reasonable. This one actually makes me question whether or not to upgrade any of my other 5 or 6 Omni apps…

Thanks for the response Valorie. I don’t have a number for the Data Backup issue. The number I found for my Drive Genius question is 07-55546, but there’s no need to answer now. I needed help 3 months ago, and now it’s irrelevant (as you will see from my request). By the way, Prosoft did have the information I was requesting. Hopefully the number can still be of use to you, and you may find where…

I would like to know too :) On OS 9 I could have probably figured out what was going on and maybe solve it if it was a problem with an extension or another program for example. On OS X I can't do that. My knowledge when it comes to OS X and its inner workings is more limited. Regarding the "bug report" I guess that if I send them an email asking for help because…

Still, most software developers will offer free upgrades if the software purchase was fairly recent. While my purchase was made about 6 months ago, for many months I was pretty much unable to use the software. Also, the other software I purchased from Intego at the same time is "supposed" to include free updates for a year. Of course, they may call them "upgrades" now and start charging money for them. A lot of the software…

Thanks. I thought that the timer was selected since it had a light blue background, but I now realize that it was not selected automatically, and I had to click on it once to select it (and the blue background got darker). I love the interface, and will give it another try. Still, I much prefer the timer in A & E Tracker Plus, but this interface is nicer :)
