Chax 1.4.5 (Mac OS X)

Totally remakes the iChat experience

Chax is a fabulous piece of software. It remakes the iChat experience, turning an already nice program into a masterpiece. The addition of tabbed chatting is fantastic, and all the other features are just icing on the cake. [alert admin]

Parallels Workstation 2.1b (Mac OS X)

Initial thoughts

It works, and performance seems to be quite good. Oddly, though, the performance of the graphics seems to be worse when you install the included driver on Windows XP. However, installing XP was very fast and painless, and it all seems to work fine. The user interface is somewhat clumsy, with visual glitches and some cumbersome interface quirks. It seems fairly clear that the programmers don't have much experience with Mac UI. Additionally, some features don't yet work. For example, getting a real CD to mount doesn't work reliably. However, once you get an OS installed, it seems to work quite well. It doesn't appear to handle 3D graphics yet, although I haven't expressly tried it -- the fact that it's only simulating VESA graphics makes it seem unlikely that would work. Performance seems to vastly beat Virtual PC or any other emulator I've tried, although it's clearly not as good as booting into XP using Boot Camp. Still... for the sheer convenience of not having to reboot, and with a little more work, this will be a great solution. [alert admin]

Freeciv 2.0.8 (Mac OS X)

Good but not great

This game actually plays surprisingly well. However, there are a number of negative points: 1. The UI is X11. Icky. Tolerable, but icky. 2. The graphics are pretty cheesy. Better than they used to be ages ago, but still cheesy. 3. The AIs are distinctly harder than the "real" Civ AIs. Even on the easiest setting, I get overwhelmed pretty fast. Admittedly, I have a very "slow and steady wins the race" playing style, but it worked well for me in Civ II and III. By the time I finish building cities across my first continent, the entire rest of the world is already occupied. That's nuts. On the plus side, though, FreeCiv's rule set has kept all the best things from each generation of Civ and thrown out the annoying stuff. The wonders seem to be well balanced, the unit selection is good, and the technology tree is great. It also has a more powerful negotiation system than I've seen in real Civ games, although the interface for it is questionable. I could live with the clunky UI and the cheesy graphics if the AIs weren't so obnoxious. I played the game ferociously for a few weeks before realizing that I couldn't adjust my play style to let me come even close to being competetive with the AI, so I've given up. [alert admin]

Solitaire Forever 1.1.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Beautiful and lots of fun!

This is far and a way the most beautiful solitaire game I've ever seen that doesn't involve real cards. The gameplay, too, is excellent. I agree the UI isn't very Mac-like -- I'd like to see the game controls duplicated into the menu bar -- but it's still fairly intuitive and easy to use. I love this game! [alert admin]

Missing Sync for Palm OS 5.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Missing Sync 5 Rocks

I've been using Missing Sync 5 for a couple of months now as a tester and as a very satisfied user. Missing Sync 4 was great, but MS 5 blows it away. The all-new Tasks, Contacts, and Events conduits are vastly superior to Apple's iSync conduit -- finally being able to synchronize calendar categories is a huge plus. But the best conduit additions are the iTunes and iPhoto sync capabilities, which are fabulous with a device like the Treo 650, and the Folder Sync conduit, which is fantastic for stuff like PDF files and, more importantly, Microsoft Office documents -- it's even better than the Documents to Go conduit for this stuff. On top of all this, there's an incredibly handy new feature that lets you set up a default conduit configuration for each connection type. For example, my system is configured so that if I sync using the cradle, all my conduits run. But if I sync over Bluetooth, only the most important ones do (Contacts, Events, Tasks, Install, Memo Pad, and Backup). This is a godsend for when you occasionally need to sync over Bluetooth but dread the notion of having all your photos or the like slowly crawling through the air. And, to wrap it all up in a nice little bow, there's even an included Avant Go conduit, a nice new user interface, a much more stable environment, and a team of programmers that seem to be genuinely excited to make sure they make their product better and better with each release. SpamSieve 2.2.4 (Mac OS X)

This is the most important program I own

I can't imagine life without SpamSieve. I get hundreds of spams a day, and it catches them all. The accuracy rate is 99.8%. It's incredibly rare that I need to correct a mistake it makes, but once I do, it stays corrected. It's a spectacular piece of software, and if you don't use it, you should download it right now. Puzzle Express 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Great fun, very addictive

My wife bought this game a few weeks ago, and I'm hooked on it. It's a whole lot of fun to play. It's very simple, but surprisingly challenging. It has both local and worldwide high score lists, through the Internet, which gives you a moving target to shoot for in terms of your personal score. The trial period of 30 minutes is a bit short; I might not have bought it myself had my wife not done so, since in 30 minutes, I wouldn't have gotten hooked enough to spend the money. Nevertheless, it's a great game! [alert admin]

DataWerkz 1.0 (Mac OS X)

It's a start...

While I was able to connect to my MySQL server and do basic editing, the form editor leaves a lot to be desired. The help doesn't seem to work, and there's no documentation, so I fumbled around for a while with the form editor, but it's not obvious how to use it. You can't resize widgets with the mouse, but have to enter the sizes in pixels instead. There isn't a drag-and-drop palette for widgets; each time you want to add one, you have to pull down a menu to choose the type of item to add to the form. And it's not clear how to associate a widget with a table field. I'll keep an eye on this program though; in the future, with some work -- and some documentation -- it might become something very useful. For now, it's certainly not worth $99. The free CocoaMySQL does everything I could figure out how to do in DataWerkz. [alert admin]

FileChute 1.5.6 (Mac OS X)

Handy and easy!

This is a great little program. I never would have imagined using something like it, but as soon as I started using it, I was hooked. It's a simple concept, and sounds kind of silly even, but the sheer convenience of it -- a program that automatically stuffs files onto your server and deletes them after a few days -- is so incredibly handy that I simply had to buy a copy. Never mind.

Moments after I posted my complaint, the site suddenly started rendering much better. I must have caught y'all in the middle of updating the site.
