SMARTReporter 2.4.2 (Mac OS X)

White papers and beliefs aside: I had installed SMARTReporter on my Mac with 4 internal drives, and shortly after installing it, got a notice that a drive was failing. Now, I don't really know what's going on internally with the S.M.A.R.T. firmware but I was given a window of time to clone (which is different from just a daily backup) the failing drive onto another drive and then watched as the failing drive died over several days, knowing the new drive had everything for certain. SmartReporter gave a heads up that I would not have gotten otherwise. Is it full proof? Of course not; nothing is. But now I always have it sitting in my menubar on every Mac. Also, the Google white paper is basically a statistical analysis that says, Drives tend to fail in the first 90 days or last for most of their expected read/write lifetimes, and there's no telling beforehand which ones will fail or why (when they do). This free little utility saved me a lot of grief once so as an end-user I think it's a great tool to have. [alert admin]

Reader Notifier 1.10 (Mac OS X)
There is a version that works under Snow Leopard:
The 1.10 version on VT does not work correctly with Snow Leopard, but someone recompiled it (exact same version number so be sure you quit and delete your existing RN 1.10 first). The working version of Reader Notifier can be found here: http://bit.ly/qzsiC I tested this and it works immediately. [alert admin]

Make RAM Disk 1.0 (Mac OS X)
While RAM disks may seem like a throw-back to pre-OSX days, 10.5 and below are still 32-bit and as such force Photoshop (even CS4) to a 3 GB RAM memory limit, no matter how much glorious RAM you have installed. And, because you should set the RAM limit usage to no more than 85% (it's already that or less by default), you don't even have access to 3 GB. (Behind the scenes PS is using some additional memory for plug-ins, but about 2.7 GB is really the max until Snow Leopard comes out and PS CS4 is rewritten for it.) But if you do have lots of RAM, then use this app to create a nice, big RAM Disk (maximum is 2 GB under 10.5) by holding down the option key at start-up. Then, in PS prefs, under Performance, set the RAM Disk to be the first Scratch Disk, move it up to the top of the list with the up-arrow key (on the right side) and now if PS does need to "go out to disk" it's going to memory! (Keep in mind this is not where you're reading and writing files to and from, it's just scratch for PS, nothing more.) Set it to always start-up with it in your login items and it'll always be available to Photoshop as a drive. [alert admin]

FileSync 2.0.8 (Mac OS X)
Solves a Big Problem: Continue to Copy After Error ![]()

One big annoyance of the Finder is it just halts the moment it encounters an error while copying. If you have a CD/DVD with problems on it, like a clip art disk with thousands of files and only a few random ones have errors, FileSync will skip over the bad files and continue to copy the good ones. This saves hours of aggravation (especially when compared with starting and stopping a Finder copy, file by file, over and over again). And it's very easy to just select the exact folders you want. Reader Notifier 1.08 (Mac OS X)
This puppy works wonderfully. It makes it very easy to read blogs any time and anywhere. At first I had mine set with all the notifications on but over time I turned everything off except the color change of the menubar icon itself (that indicates new unread blogs). It's rather surprising Google doesn't have this because it's Google Notifier's twin sister. It's free and works great under 10.4 (all variations). [alert admin]

Dramatica Pro 4.1 (Mac OS X)
Good Luck Finding the Demo or Update
After you click download, you're sent to the Demo Download page, which asks for name, email, and country (all required). That sends you to the http://support.screenplay.com/ page where it appears you can click on the "Updates for Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard)" link. Clicking on that, you're then sent to the "Tech News" page, which helpfully says: "Please e-mail Technical Support to request the download link for the new installer." Clicking on the "e-mail Technical Support" link. That sends you to the "Customer Information - Step 1" page where you are required to provide your Serial Number, and then, again, your name and email. If you have a serial number (I'm a registered user who has been waiting years for this update so I actually have a valid serial number), then that page sends you to "Technical Information - Step 2" where now (and I'm not making this up...note that this all started from the VT Download link) you must select which product, platform, OS, and the PROBLEM you're having!! Since the problem I'm having is Write Brothers has not bothered to actually set up a viable link to download the update or a demo, I proceeded to submit my "problem" on the last of this meandering maze of webpages, which would be "Check Information - Step 3". Abandon hope all ye who enter here! [alert admin]

Carbon Copy Cloner 3.0 (Mac OS X)
There's no disputing this is an incredible problem. But there is one other feature CCC has that has never been mentioned and saved my life: It's really at recovering files from a bad hard drive. I have a 1TB LaCie drive that could mount but had so many bad blocks it was becoming unusable. Just copying from that drive to another drive typically meant the copy would fail at some point. But with CCC it asks you if you want to continue on skipping that file! This increases the ability to retrieve lost files significantly. Just something to keep in mind in addition to the other uses of this great program. [alert admin]

Toast Titanium 7.1.2 (Mac OS X)
I don't know why people find trouble shooting reports unhelpful so at the risk of other people saying the same: The website login does not work! And Roxio has no easy way to email them that you can't download the update even if you are a registered member. Thus, at this point, there is no way to actually get the update. Please do rate this comment as "unhelpful" but at least have the integrity to try getting it yourself before you critique someone else's experience. [alert admin]

Toast Titanium 7.1 (Mac OS X)
How to Get to the Download Page
When you see the page with the heading: Update Toast 7 Titanium to Version 7.1 June 29, 2006, don't click on any links that say "Click Here." Instead, scroll down the page. You'll see the words "Toast 7 Titanium Updater v7.1 – 80.2 MB download" and you can click on either the orange down arrow or the word download. That starts the download. I told their tech support their website is hard to navigate to just get an incremental update. Maybe they'll listen. [alert admin]

For those on a budget I suggest LastPass plug-in and Firefox
Whatever reason you don't want to spend $40 doesn't matter. I think it's great when a someone suggests an alternative. That's what the VT community is all about. And there are many, many free apps here, so what's the problem? I used 1Password to login to make this comment but I could have also used the password vault built into Firefox. Both remember my username and password. Both work. 1Password has tons more features and…

Yeah, it's not hip to defend Microsoft...oh, I mean, M$...but the Microsoft Suite is still the most powerful and integrated and kept-up suite of apps for the Mac including iWork/iLife apps. Use OpenOffice or shareware if you don't like Microsoft but at least get your facts straight: This is the NINTH upgrade to version ELEVEN of the suite (forget the naming convention and look at the facts). In January, Office 2008 will leapfrog Microsoft Office…

I guess you found another one trick pony that does the job for you, which is great. If you want an easy way to view and keep YouTube vids then Jax works well as a plug-in to iTunes because it monitors your download cache and can convert the video to be used in iTunes/Apple TV/iPhone. Regarding iShowU: I guess you can call it a one trick pony but you can say that about most shareware,…

It doesn't matter if there's another way to do what this app does. It solves a problem (at least for one person who's very excited about it) and worked the way it was supposed to work for that person. The vast majority of users simply have never and will never use AppleScript or Automator. If someone packages a way to make it easy and give it away for free, so much the better. That's the…

This is a horrible entry and I'm reporting it the VT admin. Nobody wants to hear about ALL THE DETAILS of your specific problems by posting your email. Your point to make this "1) a manner to accellerate things," just makes this forum a way to embarrass the developer who ALREADY MADE IT CLEAR before you posted it that his turn-around time might be up to 48 hours. And your point "2) to share information"…

Installer installed, but not trackable
Then don't give it 1 star because it's not trackable. That has nothing to do with the quality of the program! Admin has been alerted to this bogus review.
