Fire 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)
Oh, do I love this app. I was a fire user back in the 0.3 era when AOL's own chat software was lagging and iChat didn't exist. After returning to the software's newest version 3 weeks ago, I'm stunned to see how far it's come. Fire has already taken over as my chat app of choice. My only feature request (and it seems like a small one) is that it would be nice to be able to put hyperlinks in away messages. It would also be nice to have an easier way to deal with links in IM sessions. Other than that, keep ahead of the pack. But you didn't need to hear that from me. Fire burns the others down [alert admin]

VLC media player 0.7.2-test3 (Mac OS X)
I love VLC. sure, it's because it plays (almost) all my media regardless of the format or source, but mostly because it simply renders DVD video crisper, cleaner, and with more vibrant colors than anything else. if DVD Player.app is like an RCA-hookup from your DVD player to your TV, VLC is like using Composite Video. Now if only the Controller had a "menu" button on it somewhere during DVD-playback. It is a bit annoying being unable to jump back to the menu screen without restarting the disc. [alert admin]

iEatBrainz 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Finally! for ages, I've felt this was the biggest feature missing from iTunes, something similar to the "SuperTagging" feature of the otherwise bloated and disorganized "MusicMatch Jukebox". This app goes far beyond the capacity of MMJB. It does seem to take a while, but runs nicely in the background. I added 1200 tracks, and hid it for 4 hours while I worked. then confirmed each track info, and imported for another 4 hours. Crashed twice, but picked up right where it left off on app-restart. I am a bit curious as to who maitains the database, and what process is used. Many tracks I consider popular were not found, and a large number of obscure files in my database were matched accurately. Wish I could figure out the rhyme and reason on that, but this OSX interface couldn't be better. [alert admin]

RsyncXCD 2.1 (Mac OS X)
The description says this is based on BootCD. But BootCD doesn't work in Panther. Does this? [alert admin]

I tried to create a screen grab of both Apple DVD Player and VLC at the same frame to contrast the image quality of both players (VLC is significantly more vibrant) As others have commented, the Apple DVD player only yeilds a green frame. Interestingly, when the resulting grab is opened in preview, and the DVD stays open behind it, the green frame plays the video through. [alert admin]

PodMail 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)
This app is fantastic. What a convenient thing for my commute. the text is easy to read, and messages are easy to locate. One wish: automatic sync. Interface could be a little neater. some of the settings could go into a preference pane, since this app only does one thing. [alert admin]

BootCD 0.5.4 (Mac OS X)
I loved this app. This is me begging the developer for a 10.3. release. [alert admin]

Poisoned 0.498 (Mac OS X)
I've been using this app for about 6 months now, and i've never been able to sort my downloads by column like you can in every other app of a similar interface. What is so hard about this, and why is it still not implemented after dozens upon dozens of updates? It seems like a small thing, but it's been driving me nuts. So, I split time between this and Acqlite, depending on my patience. (acqlite returns fewer but more valid results, after a bit of a startup wait, but has a superior interface) [alert admin]

RAW 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I love this app. I have dozens of muxed MPEG-1 files I've been wanting to convert for years, but couldn't because no programs exist to rip audio from muxed MPEG-1 files. Well, Audion did, but the software was bloated, and far from easy to use. With RAW, I open the video, and hit record. I have an instant mpeg-4 audio file. I never would have prayed for that step to be incuded already. Go RAW!!! Haven't yet used it for it's intended purpose. but who cares? [alert admin]
