Adobe Flash Player 10.0.1.218 (Mac OS X)

An Actual Improvement

Outside of the fact that their version numbering system looks like an IP addressing scheme, this beta seems to perform better on flash sites that that gave me performance troubles i.e. spiked my CPU and slowed my system to a crawl. [alert admin]

iArchiver 1.3.4 (Mac OS X)

Nice Update!

With this version I’ve made iArchiver my default (one and only) archive manager. The new icons are much better than the old ones. It may sound silly, but the new icons sealed the deal for me. I own several other archive managers and my reasoning for using iArchiver over the others are as follows: 1. Simplicity - double click simple 2. Function - you can migrate/convert archive types with drag and drop ease 3. It Just Works - like a Mac app should, transparent and seamless 4. Full Featured - I still have to take it through its paces with segmented rar files, but it supports most of the formats you’ll come across 5. Price - I bought it on a promo deal (MacUpdate or MacZot, I can’t remember); even at its full price its very reasonable for what it does. About the only thing I could ask for in a future release would be CD/DVD burning support and the ability to compress and segment files for the purposes of CD/DVD burning (like Toast will do for files/folders). AudialHub 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Great addition to the VisualHub workflow

This definitely solves my issues dealing with Vorbis and FLAC files (its now drag and drop simple). This dev does a great job of wrapping excellent Open Source (command line only) software into a GUI that even a computer novice could handle. Hopefully in a future release we’ll see support for Monkey Audio and other uncommon file types (frequently found in audio files from torrent sites). [alert admin]

CleanApp 3.0.0b5 (Mac OS X)

Still beta folks

I’ve not had to many problems with it other than the 1st / 2nd beta eating 100% processor because of a daemon issue. Its crashed a few times and needed to be force quit on other occasions, all in all nothing that’s really aggravated me to the point of deleting it. About the only major frustration I’m still having with it (after this update) is the broken service menu option that still just shows up as “_servicemenuname” (I rebuild the service menu after each release hoping this has been fixed, I should probably just contact the dev/s and let them know about it). Remembering that this is a beta goes a long way to explaining all the issues. However that said I’ll use CleanApp over its “zapping” competition any day (even as a beta), it almost always finds everything as opposed to just bits and pieces like the “other one” does (I have both licensed). As a reminder, you should only be running this beta if you understand that there will be issues (many of you already know this, but for those of you who don’t never run beta’s on a production machine). For those of you with the bouncing dock icon try uninstalling it completely as this will give you a clean slate for the next beta and the 3.0 release when its ready for prime time. [alert admin]

MAME OS X 0.118 (Mac OS X)

Needs New Wireless Keyboard Support

The new Apple (aluminum) Wireless Keyboard is not supported and I had to connect an old one in order to play. Outside of that small hiccup it works fine and definitely takes me back to my youth. A few mini bugs, but other than that a great free app thanks! [alert admin]

BetterZip 1.5.5 (Mac OS X)

My new go to compression application

This is a great replacement for those that used to use StuffIt, however it really needs a double click option to extract compressed files in the finder and a contextual menu option to compress files without having to open the application itself. Other than those small “wants” this is an inexpensive all in one compression utility that handles nearly everything. [alert admin]

1Passwd 2.4 (Mac OS X)

Responisve Developer

Version Tracker is a wealth of great Mac software, but what isn’t so common is a responsive developer, especially when the issue is entirely user created (read Mea Culpa). I sent a support email and had a response in the time it took for Mail app to recheck my Gmail account (5 min). The level of support from this developer is worth the price of admission alone. I should also point out that 1Passwd is a great security program; I’m actually using very strong passwords now, no more one password for everything foolishness (I’m a networking/communications student, I have no excuse)! The interface is easy to navigate and with the online video tutorials very easy to learn. [alert admin]

Roxio Crunch 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Popcorn 3.0?

I fail to see why this isn’t Popcorn or at the very least an upgrade to it (free I might add). Use Handbrake or VisualHub, giving any more money to Roxio at this point just encourages this kind of shoddy tripe. [alert admin]

Great addition to the VisualHub workflow

Some people are hell bent on sharing ape files and others in a single file with a cue sheet (really annoying trying to break them into individual tracks - happens most often with classical music files) and that’s the frustration I’m referring to. I saw ape support in the documentation, but saw no reference at all to .cue sheet support, so I assumed since its not documented than its not there. I should have made myself more…

DMG error!

I’ve tried to rename the 26.xx MB file (thinking it might have been a mislabeled compressed archive to no avail). The site says the file is supposed to be 41 MB, so I can only assume it was a bad upload to the server that is causing our present dilemma.

My new go to compression application

BetterZip handles all the most popular formats, I just want to use it without the need to think about or need a “Modifier key.“ As in, I double click an archive and BetterZip decompresses it. I was referring to The Unarchivers use of headless like background decompression by double click without any other action (i.e. without modifier key/s). I don’t want to piss you off here, this is not my goal. Your application is…

My new go to compression application

Your not getting my point, I don’t want to have to open/have open Better Zip in order to decompress a file (similar to how The Unarchiver works) for what I’m looking for. I don’t want to have redundant applications on my machine your app can deal with all the formats I need, why should I have to keep The Unarchiver around? I just want system wide double click decompress without having to deal…

I noticed that myself today when I checked to see if this new version would be a fully universal app. I guess the wait continues.

AWFUL upgrading system

If you have NetBarrier running turn off last site visited in the privacy area and it will work; I've had no issues with Roxio's site since I made that adjustment.

Why can't it work entirely in the background?

That by far is my only complaint with the softwares' otherwise excellent functionality. I'll buy it the very second that, that feature is implemented!
