AIM for Mac 1.5b4 (Mac OS X)

Still no audio/video support?

What's the point of using this again? Someone tell me, please. It's bad enough that AOL has completely destroyed the chat rooms TWICE. lol [alert admin]

AOL Desktop for Mac 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Why?

This application offers 3 tools: Email, Web surfing and Instant Messaging. Each function can be accomplished by astoundingly better free applications (EG: Apple Mail, Safari and Adium). The ONLY feature that kept AOL relevant these last few years is chat rooms. However, according to AOL, the familiar chat rooms are being systematically phased out in favor of web-based "AIM chat" which is basically the same experience as Userplane or Funpeeps. In other words, the AOL chat experience will soon become a ghost of its former self. So what's the reason to download and use this software? Is the mail better than Apple Mail? No. Is the browser better than Safari OR Firefox? No. Is the instant Messenger client better than Adium or iChat? No. And last but not least: Can we access chat? No.Not now, and apparently not ever. Oh well. [alert admin]

AOL Desktop Beta 8 (Mac OS X)

Unbelievable.

Facts are facts: The only thing AOL has worth using over other clients is chat rooms (their IM service is a *distant* second). It still amazes me how they've left the only reason for their existence out of this new mac "client." What's more amazing is that AOL might not have become what it was not been for its Mac client back in 1988. How quickly we forget, huh? It took them years to get on board the "free" service thing, and it's sad to see they're dragging their feet AGAIN with the Mac OSX client. Come on AOL, get on the ball! [alert admin]

System 47 2.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Working Fine on Leopard?

System 47 seems to be working just fine for me on my iMac Intel Core Duo--running Leopard. I just made sure the "screen saver" file was in my screen saver directory, and everything worked as before. In addition, I just recently upgraded to 10.5.2, and System 47 seems STILL work fine. Not sure why the previous reviewer had trouble... BTW, the screensaver is fantastic! Too bad there really isn't anyone developing it anymore, though. [alert admin]

AOL Radio 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Seems to be OK

Seems to be working fine--much better than when I reviewed it months ago! It's not a bad interface, an the linkage to iTunes is nice. Unfortunately, I don't necessarily listen to internet radio too much, but it's nice to have the XM stations. Anyhow, I thought I'd just post my two cents to offset the review I gave before. lol [alert admin]

Open Fire 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Good, but...

I've been playing this game since it's appeared on VT, and I have the sore mouse hand to prove it... lol However, even though the game looks fantastic, and can be fun at times, I have some issues/suggestions: 1) The developer advertises the fact that the "explosion meter" has an effect on the points scored. While I can't exactly DISPROVE this (since I'm paying attention to targets--not the meter), any effect it DOES have is extremely minimal. Suggestions: increase the benefits of the meter AND create some sort of visual, readable feedback showing the exact level of the multiplier/bonus the player is receiving, etc. Right now, it seems almost pointless. 2) I'm a bit confused as to why the developer chose to allow vehicles to destroy THEMSELVES via "bumping into each other." While it might be "realistic," it causes more frustration than anything else. The vast majority of video games that follow this model (one shooter, many enemies), DO NOT include this, and for good reasons. The added confusion caused by requiring the player to AVOID shooting vehicles headed towards each other is not challenging or enjoyable--it's simply frustrating and marrs an otherwise fun experience. 3) I realize this changes the dynamic of the game, but the rate at which the player can fire can be annoyingly slow. Yes, I know this is part of the challenge, but there might be more of a "WOW" factor if the rate was increased/there could be several more shots on the screen at once. Again, this would obviously alter the game, but you get my point. On a side note, I realize the game has recently fixed several high score bugs, but now that it's been fixed, I'm finding scores above 40,000 rather unattainable. And please, no wisecracks about "well, you're just not good," etc.. I'm no newbie to trajectory-based video games. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something, etc.--or if there's another high score glitch that's being worked out (like the one that allowed scores over 200,000 yesterday) On a positive note, the game does look great, and I really love the rain effects. I think that, with some improvements (not necessarily MY improvements), "Open Fire" could be one heck of a time waster. And how can you beat the price? Keep up the good work! [alert admin]

Circus Ponies NoteBook 2.0 (v236) (Mac OS X)

Support for "drawing?"

My apologies if this question has already been asked... Does Notebook support drawing/sketching? I have a Wacom tablet and would love to use the program as (among other things) a rudimentary sketch book for ideas, etc. It would certainly be easier than sketching on scraps of paper when ideas pop into my head, and then trying to keep track of them. Obviously, Notebook does a lot more, I would just like to know if this feature is in there... Thanks! [alert admin]

SystemSound Extension 4.9 (Mac OS X)

Works, but at what cost?

I was thrilled to find this product, as I have dozens of old sound bytes in various formats from ages ago that my co-workers and I had fun with. Upon installing, the extension worked as advertised, but within a minute or two, I noticed my Mac's CPU starting to audibly overwork itself. Upon checking my Activity Monitor, SystemSound was using a whopping 65% of my CPU! That's unnacceptable. That being said, I deactivated the preference pane, and I'm close to trashing this altogether. I really hope the developer is working on a fix, because this is a real gem. Please fix! Thanks! [alert admin]

The 3D Matrix Code Screen Saver 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Just FYI

I'm sure the developers did a great job creating a good product, but-- If you do a search for "Red Pill" on versiontracker, you'll find a FANTASTIC, loyal-to-the-film, and customizable Matrix screensaver that is impossible to beat. It's also FREE. And no, I don't work for the developers of Red Pill. I just think it's the best Matrix screensaver out there. That's just my two cents, so it's up to you! [alert admin]

AOL Radio 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Not Functioning

Well, it's awesome to see that AOL radio is available on the MAC, but, every time I attempt to "load the station list," the program's progress bar never moves, fails to load the stations, and then displays the message: "You are not signed on to AOL radio"--which is strange since I had to sign on to begin the station retrieval process.. lol I've tried quitting the program, restarting the machine, using it while im using AOL, and using it when I'm NOT using AOL. Nothing works. At one point, the "station list" progress bar filled up about 5%, and then it stalled again--with no results. It should be noted that I've been monitoring my throughput during each AOL radio use, and there has been no activity. Hopefully I can get this to work--it would be nice to check it out! Not Total garbage

It is by far NOT the best bittorrent client! Come on, people--let's quit with the hyperbole. There are much better clients out there than this thing.

Painter 11 Is Available

Fair point, but your comment has nothing to do with the complaints the user made--so it has no bearing on his "Review." He won't use any new versions of this software because of Corel's customer service and their bad bug fixing policy--NOT because of the software itself. Whether you agree with his rationale or not, his point still stands.

funny note:

Well, it WOULD be funny if this was a Microsoft product, but it isn't. Instead, the comment is probably directed at the larger product, the 360--which, in all actuality, is probably the only thing Microsoft has gotten *reasonably* right in years. lol

foolish bogus rating

I agree-- you can't rate Safari poorly because it crashes with your 3rd party add-on. Its like giving a car a poor review because the after-market spoiler you put on it fell off.

Chat rooms

Those are fantastic programs, but they have absolutely NOTHING to do with chat rooms--so your response doesn't apply to his comment at all. The truth is there are no programs that make use of chat rooms in the manner that the old aol did.

Oh yeah baby, just like that.

The guy SHOULD be "banged" for his comments, since they are nothing but instigating, uninformed and usually insulting. Hopefully the powers that be will take notice of this.

Garbage In, Garbage Out - Again!

It's amazing that someone presumably NOT on the AOL payroll can intelligently defend this terrible direction that AOL has taken. The reviews here are logical, proven and correct. This is not a good product on any front.

You can not be serious!

Actually, his review was right on the money. The product offers three redundant technologies--email, browsing and IM--that are painfully outperformed by other options. It's actually shocking that AOL has a fanboy left on Earth who will defend this terrible direction the company is taking.

Wow, Felix you sure know how to undermine your own credibility by making yourself look like a pompous jack*ss. Great job. The original poster had a valid point. His rating stands and is supported by the rest of us.
