My Living Desktop 4.0 (Mac OS X)
Get it if you don’t already have it!
I have used My Living Desktop since Serene Saver was first released to provide a constant “serene” background with soothing sound that is ideal for my creative work. The developer’s eager enthusiasm to provide support should be exemplary to the big guy publishing houses that are so unaccessible in so many ways (I won’t name any names, nor do I really need to). While I liked the program’s original name, Serene Saver, the new brand name probably more accurately describes its function. After all, some users may prefer scenes that are not necessarily serene. One of these days, I’m going to offer the developer a multimedia presentation of my own for the good of the cause” in case he may want to distribute it. [alert admin]

StuffIt Deluxe 2009 13.0.2 (Mac OS X)
The StuffIt Expander 13.0.2 installer offers the choice of removing (or not) the old StuffIt folder containing all of the StuffIt apps. Choosing not to remove it moves the old folder and the StuffIt CM plugin to the trash and writes a new StuffIt folder, which contains only StuffIt Expander 13.0.2 and StuffIt manual, in the Applications folder. After completing installation, it is necessary to manually (1) move the plugin back to the Library:Contextual Menu Items folder, (2) remove the old StuffIt folder from the trash, (3) replace the old StuffIt Expander app with the new one and (4) then replace the new StuffIt folder with the old one in the Applications folder. While I did not try to install by removing the old folder, I believe that doing so would result in the loss of all StuffIt apps and functionality except StuffIt Expander 13.0.2. Smith Micro could have thought this one through a lot better. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)
My “friends on the VersionTracker team”...
...are no longer available via email. VersionTracker Pro has not been working properly since CJNET has been managing it, so I sent email asking for assistance because of the following problems: 1. Many current versions of my applications show newer versions in the VersionTracker app window. This has increased over the past few months. 2. The VersionTracker web site falsely reports that no version of any software is installed on my computer. This too has increased over the past few months. 3. Today, The VersionTracker application has consistently reported that my computer cannot connect to the Internet (error code 28), when it is indeed connected. In fact, it reports newer versions of software that I have set to ignore (another problem), which indicates that it has connected to the Internet. I received a response saying that tech support’s email address has changed, but not what the new address is. Instead, it directed me to this web site page to post a comment. The once useful and reliable VersionTracker has become a disaster under CJNET’s management, which has become unavailable to customers other than to collect payment for a program that has stopped working. Does anyone know if there is a comparable program that actually works? [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)
Help with Subscription Renewal Needed
Does anyone have a phone number for customer service to renew a VersionTracker Pro subscription? Despite the barrage of VersionTracker app popups and an email from “the Team” telling me my subscription is about to expire, the online interface for doing so is unclear. For several days, I sent emails requesting clarification, but got no response. While I like VersionTracker app, the lack of customer support will soon make it useless. I am amazed that management makes it so difficult to purchase subscriptions or respond to email requests for assistance. [alert admin]

Mission Impossible: Activation
Can anyone figure out how to activate the 3.0.1 upgrade? The activation process is like a poorly planned marathon race with way too many hurdles to jump (license code, challenge question, registration at the site, encrypted codes, and on and on). After multiple failed attempts to register an account just to get the answer to the challenge question, despair set in and I finally gave up. Why make it so difficult (or seemingly impossible)? Opera 9.5b1 (Mac OS X)
Unlike previous versions of Opera on my Mac, this beta displays all web pages with little squares instead of text glyphs. It is obviouly a font issue, but I can’t track it down. Needless to say, this beta does not perform the most basic function of a web browser — display html text — rendering it useless. I reported the issue and am waiting for the next beta release. Meanwhile, Safari and Firefox rule! [alert admin]

Java Embedding Plugin 0.9.4+a (Mac OS X)
Cannot expand zip download file
Once I have downloaded the file, the StuffIt Deluxe returns an error message (unrecognizable file type) when I try to expand it. What’s the secret to expanding this zip file? [alert admin]

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Scripting plug-in 1.0.2a (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
When I run the installer, it searches my disk and returns the message that it cannot find a copy of Photoshop 7 on my Mac. Indeed I do not have a copy of Photoshop 7 installed. I have the CS2 version, where the Photoshop 7 scripting plugin file in question resides. [alert admin]

I kept having the same problem trying to download the ATTO 3.20 driver. ATTO tech support responded to my problem report as follows: “Please make sure that you download the driver file using Internet Explorer, Safari will corrupt the download. Also, make sure you are using Stuffit 8.02 or higher. The latest free version on the www.stuffit.com site is v9.” Using Explorer, it worked, but with two catches: 1. Explorer returns the message that it does not recognize the file format. In that window, just click the “Download as…” button. 2. StuffIt Deluxe returns a similar message, but it will expand if drag/dropped onto StuffIt Expander. Conclusions: 1. There’s something weird about Safari. I suspect it has to do with its highly proclaimed advanced security features, since it displays other anomalies not experienced with Explorer. 1. There’s something weird about the ATTO 3.20 driver file. Anyway, with a little persistence, you should be able to download, expand and install the ATTO 3.20 driver file. [alert admin]

Wacom tablet 4.7.7-6 (Mac OS 9)
Assuming that the Wacom people have been listening and finally chose to fix the well-documented problems of version 4.7.7-5, I decided to download and install version 4.7.7-6. However, every few restarts, the new driver fails to load (described at startup as an "internal driver failure"), making it necessary to reinstall the Wacom software in order to use the tablet. There's no improvement here. Don't waste your time. [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop Build 4.0.3846 actually seems to work poorly with Snow Leopard. It is running MUCH slower on my iMac 3.06 GH Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB SDRAM, with Snow Leopard than it did with Leopard. Having to wait several minutes for Parallels' virtual disk to mount makes it impractical to use. I sent email to the software developer asking about this, but have received no response after several days. Is anyone else experiencing this apparent…

There's got to be some mistake here: On my iMac running Snow Leopard, VersionTracker incorrectly recognizes QuickTime Player 10.0 as version 7.6.2. Here's another curious observation: Apparently the Snow Leopard installer not only installed QuickTime Player 10.0 in the Applications folder, but it also moved the existing QuickTime Player 7.6.3 from the Applications folder to the Utilities folder and removed the QuickTime preferences panel. I'm wondering if there is any reason to keep QuickTime Player 7.6.3 in the…

Is it true that VersionTracker takes bribes to include software on its Editor Picks list? If so, it has rendered the list completely irrelevant as a guide to quality software and should just state that the list is paid ads. The Mac community needs an honest Mac update program like the one that VersionTracker used to be.

Perhaps Microsoft’s strategy for fixing version 1.0.2 is to relabel it as version 1.0.3, as it did by fixing Vista by relabeling it as Mohave. I tried to report the issue to Microsoft, but got lost in its web site’s maze for sending email.

When I downloaded it directly from the VersionTracker application, it downloaded as a .php file, not as a .zip file as it should, and tried to open in my default php application (Adobe GoLive). However, it did download as a .zip file from the VersionTracker web site page. Unfortunately, this version of the gas widget does not find gas prices. Since it is free, I will not complain. Hopefully, there will be a future version that…

How did you get the Toast 10.0.1 update? Roxio’s web site says there is a free Toast 10.0.1 update, but after logging in and clicking the download button to get to the download page, clicking the download button there goes to the customer support page with no option to get the update. I tried to send email to Roxio, but that interface was messed up too, eventually leading to an error message saying that the page…

After getting the typical Sonic Solutions runaround yesterday, with no resolution after more than 2 hours on the phone with them to be able to download or get a serial number for the upgrade, I managed to cancel my order with some effort since I was initially told that “unfortunately” they could not do that. They could and finally did after considerable argument. Today, not wanting to waste more time waiting to talk to them on…

Running VersionTracker identified only StuffIt Expander as having a newer version and when I clicked the download button, it downloaded only the Expander 13.0.2 installer, which resulted in the strange behavior I described. I posted my comment to alert others to the issue I experienced believing that it might help prevent problems. I am pleased that you did not experience the same problems. Thanks for letting me know that there is a full StuffIt Deluxe release 3…
