SlidePad 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Save money... use Sidenote

Thanks to earlier reviewers who directed me to Sidenote. SlidePad was on special on MacZOT; I was thinking of buying it, but checked Versiontracker. Glad I did. After trialling SlidePad, I have to agree with the reviewers who say use Sidenote instead... save yourself $20. [alert admin]

Bento 2.0v2 (Mac OS X)

Useless support

I posted this on the Bento forum. I am reposting it here as a warning to potential new users who, like me, expected at least a minimal level of support from Filemaker: The problem here is that there were NO bug fixes to v1. It was really a beta release; I learned to get around the bugs (basically by not using the features in question). Only a mug or desperado would buy another Family Pack after 8 months to get the bugs fixed. I'm neither ;-) The bugs were a real inconvenience to me, but I figured I'd hold out for a v1.1 release. As we all know, this never happened. I own a LOT of software and this is the first time I've experienced such poor support. Although I can easily afford to buy another Family Pack, I won't on principle. As I said... "Only a mug or a desperado..."! By extrapolation, I will now avoid purchasing any Filemaker products in the future. The support has been simply appalling. After waiting 8 months for a bug fix release, I consider myself to be a patient user. Unless the problem was user error, the support on the Bento forum has been of the form "I have reported this to our engineers". The implication being that it will be dealt with in a reasonable timeframe. I don't think any of us expected to have to pay for these bug fixes! [alert admin]

EasyListening 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Excellent product and support

I use my iPod for music, but it's nice to have some music on my phone on the rare occasions that I'm not carrying my iPod. EasyListening does the trick. I have a few Smart Playlists that collect 1GB of music together for my w910i. It's really nice to have access to my iTunes library in this way. Previously, I was manually copying files onto the memory card. Painful! Also, support is excellent. I had one small problem that cropped up when iTunes 8 was released. The developer was really keen to track the problem down and fixed it straight away (within hours). This is what I love about independent developers (who care!). [alert admin]

Ultralingua Dictionaries 7.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Version 7 - finally not Windows-like

Yes, the upgrade policy sucks. I've only been using one dictionary for years, so it didn't kill me that much. Now I have two dictionaries and am worried about being shafted in years to come. I expect I'll only upgrade when 10.6 forces me to. Having said that, Version 7 is the first version I actually LIKE using (rather than HAVING to make do with the ugly Windows-like interface). Ultralingua finally looks and behaves like a Mac application. The flashcard facility looks cool, but you have to create your own. It would be nice if there were some way for users to share them. Maybe there is, but there's no manual, so who knows?! The pop-up translation box looks really nice now. Much more readable. I use this all the time when reading French and Spanish web pages. Simply Superb

For those of you who travel great distances OR like your laptop to sleep instantly OR want to save disk space equal to the amount of RAM you have installed (great for us MBA users)... I haven't been using this for long, but as a MacBook Air (SSD) user, I love the ability to reclaim 2GB of precious disk space :) Here's how I use it: 1) Install for all users (otherwise you don't seem to get the options). 2) In System Preferences, choose "sleep only" and then delete the sleep image (saves me 2GB of disk space). 3) Choose "smart sleep". This will ensure that it only hibernates (i.e. writes RAM to disk) if your battery is below a certain level. 4) If you are on a long-haul flight (e.g. Aus to UK or LA), choose "hibernate only". This will always write everything to disk and will turn the machine off. When you open your laptop, it will take a while to copy from disk back to RAM. I find this mode saves the gradual drain of battery power that occurs when in normal sleep mode. If you have a laptop with that occasional "fail to wake from sleep" problem, then I suggest you don't use this tool. On the rare occasion when the laptop fails to wake from sleep, you won't be able to retrieve your sleep state using the "remove battery" trick which forces the laptop to restore the sleep state from disk. Cage Fighter 1.1 (Mac OS X)

v1.0 works fine, v1.1 doesn't for me

OK, I had a go with v1.1 on my other Mac. It didn't work. I then tried v1.0 and it worked fine. -Rick [alert admin]

Cage Fighter 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Works fine in 10.4.9

I'm still using v1.0 and just ran it after running Uno 1.5 and having my Mail buttons re-Tigerized. It worked fine. Now I'm thinking I won't install v1.1, just in case something happened that broke it in later Tiger updates. -Rick [alert admin]

Chax 1.4.4 (Mac OS X)

Superb Plug-in

This is an excellent piece of work. I originally installed it to get the tabbed functionality, but it does so much more. Bugs appear now and again, but the developer fixes things quickly and is actively adding new features at an incredible rate of knots. Nice to be along for the ride :) [alert admin]

iPhoto Library Manager 3.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Simply Brilliant. iPLM to the rescue (again)

There is a notorious bug in iPhoto. If it bites you, you'll never be able to empty trash again (or at least until Apple fixes the problem, outstanding for 6 months now). iPhoto simply crashes. The problem is described here, as is my solution using iPLM: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2770179#2770179 iPLM is indispensable. I mostly use it to assure the integrity of my iPhoto libraries. Until the iPhoto Team gets its act together wrt. fatal database corruption, I won't be able to live without iPLM. Then again, maybe one day I'll bite the bullet and move all my photos out of iPhoto to another application! [alert admin]
