EasyFrame 2.3 (Mac OS X)
Outstanding. This is a great little tool that does one thing and does it really well. It's often much better to have a few small, handy tools like this than to have to cope with a massive, cumbersome piece of bloatware. I've been using a few of Yellow Mug's utilities for a while now and have found them very handy and reliable, and I expect EasyFrame to be no exception. [alert admin]

Time Ballz 2.3.1 (Mac OS X)
This was one of my favourite screensavers, and I paid the $2 for it.
However, the current version dates from 2003 and is PowerPC only. It can't be used on Intel Macs, which is very frustrating.
Although the developer's site is still online, the email address given there no longer works (emails sent to it just bounce). Please, developer, update this excellent saver for Intel Macs! This is all the more important because you asked money for this saver. Users of freeware that doesn't get updated haven't that much cause for complaint, but screensavers are rather trivial things to be asked to pay for in any case, so to take money and then fail to produce essential compatibility updates seems a little naughty. (OK, the registration fee for this one was extremely small, but even so, it's the principle that counts.)

This latest Leopard-compatible Toast 8 upgrade includes version 3.2.3 of Deja Vu, which is not the latest Leopard-compatible version. The latest Deja Vu is 3.3 for Tiger and 3.4 for Leopard. If you turn on the checkbox in the Toast installer to install Deja Vu, it installs version 3.2.3 even if you have a newer version installed already (I had 3.4). So beware of that. You can of course download and use Deja Vu 3.4 as a free upgrade from its developer's site, but it's a pity that this Toast upgrade doesn't include the latest Leopard-compatible version. It's also a pity that it'll silently downgrade a newer version; that's pretty unfriendly. [alert admin]

OldFolder 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Good potential, but a bit more work would be useful
This is exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for, as I really want to keep the hierarchical Dock folder behaviour in Leopard. OldFolder is the first attempt I've seen to bring this behaviour back and is thus very much appreciated and most useful. However, there are few ways in which it could be better. Particularly (in descending order of importance): 1. As yet, it doesn't support aliases to folders. One of my Dock folders (which used to be extremely useful, and is now utterly useless as a stack) is a folder full of folder aliases, so that I can easily collect together ways of accessing different directories. OldFolder just shows these as top-level folder names, just as the equivalent stack does, and it fails to allow me to navigate the contents of the folders. So, support for aliases needs to be added. 2. There are no icons against the names, which makes it much less easy to see what's what. 3. It's a shame that the icon has to appear intermingled with applications rather than in the 'folder' side of the Dock, but I suppose that's unavoidable. 4. The default click behaviour is to open the window offering a Quit option or to choose a new folder. In the old Dock folders I could hold down the mouse button to get the hierarchical menu, and it would be nice if OldFolder could also do this with an unmodified click. [alert admin]

Apple AirPort Update 2006-001 (Mac OS X)
Disabled my wireless networking ![]()

I was offered this update by Software Update on my 2GHz white MacBook running system build 8J2135, and assumed it would be OK to install it given that it was offered, and my system fitted the requirements. Prior to installing this, my wireless connection was fine. Now it no longer works, and I can only connect to the Internet if my Ethernet cable is plugged in. Most annoying; I really wish I hadn't installed this now. The AirPort connection does still work occasionally and my wireless network is found and listed. But I can't connect to the 'net through Safari, and it's basically in a non-working state now. [alert admin]

Amnesty Singles 1.1 (Mac OS X)
This is indeed a great idea, and I would (will) register a copy if it's ever updated to allow icon-less widget apps to be created. I really like the idea of being able to run widgets singly, and at present I'm using Amnesty (original version, not Singles) to put a handful of useful widgets on my desktop. I like what Amnesty Singles does, but the apps it creates install an icon in the Dock when they're running, which I'd like (optionally) not to happen. If the software could be updated to allow the option of creating apps that have neither Dock icons nor menu bar items, then this idea would work even better. [alert admin]

WindowS InvaderS 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Complete and utter garbage. All that happens is that two rows of Windows logos (or whatever alternative graphic you choose) hop down slowly from the top of the screen. They don't even move from side to side, and all the levels are exactly the same (at least, they were for as many as I could be bothered to play). There's no variation, no challenge and nothing of interest here at all. If this were a genuine Space Invaders clone (i.e. a decent-quality reimplementation of the original game) it could be quite good, but it's the simplest possible attempt at the idea, with nothing at all to commend it. And the author asks for a donation in an initial pop-up screen! Good grief. Even as freeware it's a complete waste of time. This is a candidate for immediate deletion. [alert admin]

Superman Returns 3D Screen Saver 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Wonderfully, gloriously cheesy - just like Superman itself. It really made me smile. Pity the music isn't better (the Lois and Clark theme in particular doesn't work as well as it could), but I loved this all the same. The graphics could be more detailed, but they're acceptable for only a 1.7MB download. To the developer: a VSync option would be a useful addition. I see some very noticeable tearing from time to time with my ATI X800 card. [alert admin]

System 47 2.2 (Mac OS X)
The VersionTracker classification is wrong. This is NOT shareware; the documentation makes it very clear that it's freeware, and that it always will be. And a very nice screensaver it is too, with excellent quality graphics and lots of variety. Great for Star Trek fans. [alert admin]

Halo 1.5.2 (Mac OS X)
The problem I referred to before, of flashing overlays and subsequent serious video corruption, turned out to be a problem with version 1.08 of the X800 ROM, and I've since seen similar effects elsewhere. I'm pleased to say that the recently-released version 1.09 ROM update for the X800 fixes the problem. [alert admin]

Apple has fixed this problem at last! Mac OS X 10.5.5 was advertised as having "extensive graphics enhancements", and it seems that this was one of them! On my Mac Pro 2.8 with NVIDIA 8800GT, the 2.1 test gave wonky results under OS X 10.5.4, but now it displays perfectly under 10.5.5.

It's easy for the initial pop-ups to be covered by other windows, especially under Leopard. If this does happen, try moving a few windows to one side and you'll probably see the initial pop-up query window. This kind of problem can affect many programs, not just this one, and it's definitely got a lot worse under Leopard, which often brings the Finder to the front because of its confirmation windows that you initially have to…

Absolutely right. For some reason, it seems that it didn't work on the first occasion I tried it, but after a subsequent reload it did behave as I'd hoped it would. I can't explain the anomaly, but I'm pleased that it does work as expected. The developer also appears now to have fixed the resolving of aliases, which is great. Unfortunately, for me, it just causes the application to hang (maybe because of the large size…

There's an easy way to get around the "Foundation, The Name of" problem. Instead of typing spaces between the words, as you would with a normal name, type hard spaces (non-breaking spaces) instead. You get them by typing <Option-Space> and they look exactly like normal spaces on the screen. But EndNote sees them as characters other than spaces, and hence doesn't reorder things to make the final word look like a surname in the generated…
