DEVONthink Pro Office 2.0pb7 (Mac OS X)
I had used DEVONthink Personal initially and then moved up to Pro and, finally, Pro Office. Although it was an application I used every day, I wasn't getting that warm fuzzy feeling. I searched around and purchased a competing application, Together, and thought I had found true love. Then the beta of DEVONthink Pro Office 2 was announced, and I decided to give the relationship another try. These guys have REALLY been hard at work! Love reborn! New and improved features are too numerous to mention, but I must say it does for my workflow what moving from dial-up to cable did for my web browsing. And they're not done yet! Try it, spend some time with it, kick the tires, burn some rubber. Print to DEVONthink instead of paper, and help save the forests. This baby rocks! (Sorry for the overabundance of metaphors. I couldn't resist.) [alert admin]

MaxMenus 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)
Proteron is apparently no more.
Visiting the Proteron website will take you to a page where you can download MaxMenus and LiteSwitch. Registration codes are provided for both. My assumption is that the two applications are no longer being developed (no update since 2007), but the developers were nice enough to provide download links and registration codes. MaxMenus is an excellent application that I have been using for more years than I can recall. It has (and still is) one of the first applications I install on a new computer. My guess is that, eventually, it will not work on a future iteration of Mac OS X, and that will be a shame. I hope someone can pick up this application and resume development. If I were a developer, I would gladly take it on. [alert admin]

Screenium 1.2b1 (Mac OS X)
I saw a note on one web site that said this application had been updated. It was impetus enough to download it and give it a spin. I have been using SnapzPro X for eons, and Screenium would need to really impress if I was going to spend $29 for capabilities I already had in other software. Well, Screenium did just that. Clean, polished, intuitive, Mac-quality software, it is loaded with features and packaged well. SnapzPro X remains useful for still captures, but I am happy to acquire Screenium for my video capture needs. If Screenium were to add still capture, it would be that only tool I'd need. I can't believe they made it better! ![]()

I didn't think it was possible, but they've done it! They've actually improved it! This is one of those applications/utilities that you really appreciate when you're using someone else's computer, and they don't have it. I, too, bought my first copy of QuicKeys so long ago, I can't even remember when it was. There are relatively few applications that I absolutely must install on every new computer. This is one of them, and other favorites would probably include Default Folder and DragThing. That said, if I only have one complaint it would be the new icon. Simple is better. [alert admin]

I have been a Mac user since the 1980s, and I've had years of experience with the good, the bad, and the ugly in the applications department. If you don't own an iPhone (iPhone integration if terrific), and if you never visit more than a few web sites, you may not need thins software. Chances are, you're far from that description, and then you NEED 1Password. Imagine never forgetting website IDs and passwords. A quick click using a stable browser plugin in your toobar and you're in. Imagine having all your software registration codes and other details of purchase as your fingertips. Imagine encrypted access to all your important numbers--credit cards, social security numbers, etc.--readily available when you need them. Imagine having this available on your iPhone as well. Oh, but that's not all! They are perpetually working to improve the software even when you couldn't imagine how they could make it any better. On top of that, their tech support is prompt, courteous, and efficient. What else can I say? [alert admin]

Apple iPhone 2.1 (Mac OS X)
Now, THAT'S better! Syncing is MUCH faster! Installing applications from the phone is INCREDIBLY faster! When apps are updated (via the phone, at least), the apps are placed in the original location, not at the end! 3G connectivity is improve!. Where were all those bars hiding? No cut and paste or voice dialing, but I'm still thrilled with the update. [alert admin]

Sleep Blaster 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)
But I require a snooze. If it could recognize the difference between "Shut off!" or "Enough!" and "Snooze please!" now that would be great. [alert admin]

QuickVoice Recorder 1.0 (iPhone)
The features are great. You can title your voice files after recording. You can pause both recording ("Now, what was I going to say next?") and playback. Plans are also in the works to sync with the desktop application. The problem? Sound quality is terrible. If you don't have a lisp, you will after recording. A free application for iPhone, Voice Record, lacks several of the features of QuickVoice but sounds much better, and it's free. I hope the developers of the iPhone application will fix the sound. Then, it's an easy 5 stars. Until then, I couldn't, in good conscience, rate it that high. [alert admin]

Voice Record 1.0 (iPhone)
The playback volume is nice and loud. You can title your recordings but only prior to recording, and that can be a bit of a problem if you don't have the luxury of time to set it up. QuickVoice for the iPhone has much more in the way of features (pausing during recording or playback and future syncing with their desktop application), but it'll cost you a few bucks. However, if free is what you want, and you don't need any bells or whistles, Voice Record should fit the bill. [alert admin]

iconXprit 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)
I was able to change the color of a folder, but the text I added did not stick... unless I need to restart the Finder to get it to work. I would, however, prefer not to. [alert admin]

Amnesia vs. AppZapper and the like.
Count me in on some real world testing. I guess you could run more than one app. Generally they show you what they'll remove before they do it.

I used Synergy for a number of years and switched to another application I liked better (Cover Stream). I am having similar problems with iTunes and that application, so I would suggest that the problem may occur when anything that hooks into iTunes is active in the background. Several times I've had to hold the power button to shut down my computer, because each time iTunes was quit, it started again.

What's with all the version changes?
It's not that they're not ready for prime time. They most certainly are. If anything, it simply means that they're overly diligent and consistently finding ways to improve their offering. In most cases, I never notice the refinements, as they're generally subtle and may be even provide a bug fix for something that did not affect me. When I do notice improvements, my thought is, "Now what made them think of…

Pray tell, what are the omissions? I'm seriously interested in knowing what they might be. In fact, if they're not included, and you drop Startley a line, they might include them.

Not to argue your point, but you meant, I assume, "translucency" or "transparency," not "opaque." You cannot see through opaque.

You need to install it first, then access the Desktop and Screensaver System Preference. Choose Longest Day from the list and then you'll see. It you are unfamiliar with installation and use, it really does help if you read the "Longest Day 1.0 FAQ."
