SWF & FLV Player 3.8.20.6241 (Mac OS X)
Plays f4v's if you rename them .flv
The other two FLV players here couldn't recognize my Adobe CS4 files that were named .f4v (compressed with h.264 / aac). This player could! I did have to rename the file .flv for it to work. This same trick did no good on the other two (FLVthing and FLVplayer). This one rocks, has scrub controls, and is much more mature-feeling. And it's free! [alert admin]

Apple TV 2.3 (Mac OS X)
The 2.3 update seems good so far; and the new "remote learning" feature is great! It's buried in Settings \ General \ Remotes \ Learn Remote. Finally you can ditch that annoying tiny remote, and use your DVR remote (or any other) with AppleTV. After learning the basic functions (the up/down/left/right and play-pause and menu--the ones on the apple remote), there's 9 more functions it'll learn: play, stop, pause, FF, REW, Skip back, Skip forward, and Chapter up & down. Makes the AppleTV MUCH easier to control and less clutter on the coffee table. [With the standard TimeWarner DVR remote, it took a few tries in programming its AUX button to be a DVD player that actually sent out a signal for the Skip-back button... the one that worked best is a virtual Sharp DVD player; only the blue "menu" button didn't work so I used the grey "exit" button. It's code 252 for the remote -- UR5-8400.] [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.3 (Mac OS X)
possible fix for updater not finding app
From TUAW: ERIC WOEHLER If you get the message that "No version of the software found on volume", due to having removed all the megabytes of language files etc, you can still get the installer to run. 1. Download the update from MS and save the updater on yr desktop - you will be modifying the file, so need to be able to edit and save it 2. Right click on the Updater and click "Show Package Contents". 3. Navigate to Contents -> Resources. You need to modify the script: package_updatable. 4. Remove these lines using Text Edit or BBEdit or similar: if not found_valid_version: sys.exit(48) Save these changes to the Updater then close. Now it will update. I had to open the .DMG and copy the file onto my HDD before I could show contents. Installed perfectly though. Enjoy [alert admin]

PocketMac for BlackBerry 4.1.25 (Mac OS X)
...has anyone tried this to see if it fixes syncing with Office 2008, particularly Entourage 2008? [alert admin]

AOL Desktop for Mac Beta 17 (Mac OS X)
...if so, why didn't they call this v1.0.1 b1? I agree -- in my years of developing software, i've never heard of such a lengthy trajectory of confused releases. [alert admin]

Apple MacBook Pro EFI Firmware 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)
firmware already at newest version?
My MBP already has the stated firmware version, even though I only applied the EFI v1.5 update. Software update didn't say I needed it, and the standalone installer said my machine did not need the update either. Is it a change in the firmware installer, or to the actual firmware? [alert admin]

Apple AirPort 5.3.1 (Mac OS X)
no firmware updates--standalones now avail.
As reported on MacFixIt, there aren't any new firmware updates for the base stations themselves. (I got the Windows version at work, and I watched it download the current firmware files, which included v6.3 for Airport Express, which is the current vers.) But, the standalone installers and the apple web pages seem to be back up today (3/12). [alert admin]

Subway Maps for iPhone 1.3 (Mac OS X)
jeez, great shareware apps that take time & effort to build and test, cost less than this. I find it incredibly egotistical to sell a few minutes of photoshop work for $12. Wow. Kids, go to the MTA's website and chop up their system maps yourselves and copy them into iPhoto. [alert admin]

MAME OS X 0.118 (Mac OS X)
On first run, like the previous comment, it tries to validate your ROM files and seems like it goes through its entire internal list even if you don't have all of them. I killed it after 40 min. and it was only up to "C". I ended up scrolling to the games I wanted to play, selecting their names, and validating just those, just so I could play it. But, c'mon, 5 hours isn't really useable. Once in the games, I noticed a few more graphic artifacts than on MacMAME (esp. in vector games) but seemed to play well otherwise. Coming out of games, a lot of 'unexpected quits'. Definitely looking promising, but I'll stick with MacMAME for now. [alert admin]

Apple Safari 3.0b (Mac OS X)
Also no problems installing 3 beta here -- one thing I do really like is the new Find feature, which works like FireFox's. A "find" bar appears at the top of the window, and it highlights all the occurrences on a page as you type. And, it shows a quick but useful orange hilite animation as you cycle through the found bits so you can actually see what's being found (before, the page would jump somewhere when you hit Cmd-G and the hilites were often impossible to see). I do notice a bit more fan revving, but it's beta, after all. All in all a nice (if small) improvement to the mac version. I also tried the Windows version and it's a little rougher around the edges; it's kind of dark and gloomy looking, with a noticeably darker grey, and fonts seem a bit too soft. But that's a great first step, and a smart move. [alert admin]

Not sure what specifically you mean by "MobileMe is a disaster as we all know" -- I've been a MobileMe user since it was .Mac, and while the transition was bumpy (to put it nicely) I've been nothing but pleased at how well it's been working the last year or so (since summer '08, til now, March '09). Syncs quickly and automatically, in the background, never loses data, and everything's always where I need…

...from the description on appleinsider: "The patch also improves playback of HD video on the new unibody MacBook Pros with GeForce 9600M graphics cards, as well as legacy Mac systems that include NVIDIA's GeForce 7300 GT chip -- namely the first-generation Mac Pro and Late 2006 24-inch iMac." So, it appeared b/c it's valid on your machine. Let us know if you notice an improvement!

Version 3 was not a free upgrade... upgrade from v2 is $17.95. You can purchase a new serial number on their website. You can even search for your old v2 serial number on their site at https://www.panic.com/transmit/support.html. It's all pretty clear on their website, on the "buy" page.
