CNET TechTracker app 1.0 beta 3 (Mac OS X)

Genuine 20 carrot gold flop!

Well, very hard to review a product that simply doesn't work. I have now tried to run this %%#@!##@!! program on my iMac (3.06GHz) running 10.5.8 and on my Macbook Pro (2.53GHz) also running 10.5.8 - same result on both. Absolutely nothing. Instructions say that a web page is supposed to open upon installation - NOPE! I tried an uninstall and reinstall on the iMac - made no difference. I read the readme file on uninstalling, and it indicated that on your CNET homepage there will be a 'change computer' window with a 'remove computer link'. No there isn't, just the same old instructions for downloading. I will try contacting CNET help, but based upon other writers comments i don't hold much hope. and, oh yes! I have checked my firewall, I am using the the correct browsers. beta 3 eh? hmmmm! alpha 1, I think! [alert admin]

WireTap Studio 1.0.12 (Mac OS X)

Ambrosia - your product is a sweet as ever !

I have used this product in early versions for a number of years. The latest incarnation as Wire Tap Studio has continued to improve a very good product. I am a professional audio user, both as a musician and as a radio producer. I use products such as the full suite of Bias products as well as Logic - and these all have their important place in my box of tricks. Yet I constantly find myself using Wire Tap because of its ease of use and reliability. The latest version rocks! This is not a review so I'm not going into it's great features, but what Ambrosia claim above is accurate. Yes it costs, for god's sake - what do people expect? Not even water is free, so a well developed and well supported product is only going to get to that stage if it is financially viable. Moaning and complaining about this aspect of software release shows a complete lack of developmental and financial sense. Get a life! If you have genuine issues as a result of using the product then speak with Ambrosia and help improve it. If your just going to 'slag -off' because of 'hidden agenda' - do us all a favour and keep your mouth shut. Buy it, don't buy it - that is always the option you have. [alert admin]

Saved me big heartache

I have reviewed this product on an earlier version. It warned me of an imminent HD failure and allowed me (prior to Time machine), to make a backup and attend to the problem of the drive itself. I took my machine (a Powermac G4) to an Apple tech who confirmed the HD it was in a bad way. Apart from the enormous hassle involved when you loose everything - I had just transferred some radio interviews for editing. Disaster if I had lost them. It's friendly green light gives considerable comfort, and if it detects an abnormality it can email you to warn you. Very important when you are away from your machine, as I am, for log periods. I have it running in one version or another, still on my G4 Powermac, and on my G4 Powerbook, and now on my iMac dual 3.06. It is easy to install, has a check for update feature, and is reliable. Have had no problems with installation or upgrades. [alert admin]

Looking Good!

Running iMac 3.06GHz - 24". Installed easily, and runs like a dream. Had no problems as previous users have reported. OK, I have only run it through it's paces for about 30 minutes, but smooth scrolling, fast response, accurate. Have rebooted several times and no hanging or crashing. [alert admin]

BIAS Peak Pro 6.0.4 (Mac OS X)

I seem to be one out! Peak works great!

I have used this product since Peak version 4. I realise the current comments are focussing upon ver. 6 - but I must comment that I have used Peak, during live gigs, I have used it to master down to CD mix of my music, and currently I am using ver. 6 to master my weekly national radio program. Peak is a great product and the support is A1. I have had no issues with the current version. While I am currently upgrading to an iMac Core Duo, my current G4 handles peak 6 well, and believe me I am running too many top end apps and it tends to grind to a halt - but no issue with peak. I do use a variety of plug-ins and they have presented no problem. I do believe there is a small issue with the response of the metering - it does appear to have a small lag - but overall I find it hard to fault. If you are long time user of Peak you will find the interface not dissimilar to previous versions - which for a new user can be confusing (even overly complex), but like many pro apps it's a matter of diving in and using it over and over again. Suddenly it does make sense. For my radio work, I have found the simple addition of the 'ducking' feature to be very useful. It was a pain in the butt previously in regard to layering voice overs, now it's a breeze. I love the seamless interface with Soundsoap Pro, which together make for a great suite for reviving old vinyl and cassette recordings, therefore it's great for archiving old material. So in summary, I have used it professionally on stage, in a music recording studio and as the main tool for radio program production. I will continue to use it. I can't comment on why others are having problems - except to say it becomes necessary to keep your system uptodate and run utilities and programs like Techtool Pro (and other such programs) regularly. I have found that oiften minimises issues of program/plug-in crashes. [alert admin]

Little Ripper

This baby saved me much heartache and hair when it accurately predicted a HD failure on my Powermac. I was able to backup everything critical in time. My local Mac repairer confirmed the HD was failing, it was replaced, the backup reinstalled everything and I was VERY happy. That green light is very reassuring and if it turns red - watch out. Best of all it sent me an email to my Powerbook at work, so I knew to check for the failure when i got home. [alert admin]

Nokia Multimedia Transfer 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Pity the link doesn't work

Well, it's a bit of a 'no-go', when you go to see if your particular Nokia is able to work with this product - the link takes you to a "sorry" this page is not available message - that's a great start Nokia!!!! [alert admin]

SoundSoap 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Follow-up to previous review

OK. Not gonna get wordy as I've already contributed with a review - but now I have downloaded 2.2.1 and used it on both powermac and powerbook for a week, I can say - it works well, with no problems at all! [alert admin]

SoundSoap 2.1.0 (Mac OS X)

In my opinion it works .... and works well

I have used this product since version 1. It works. It does exactly what it is supposed to do and does it well. More often than not, plug-ins and stand-alone apps fail to operate correctly when there are other "issues" afoot. I have found that keeping my system clean (regularly using Techtool Pro) and keeping system and apps up-to-date, seems to overcome most issues that I have. I note someone has indicated it can't be resized. No, nor has the manufacturer ever claimed it could. It is best used as a plug-in and frankly even when used as a stand-alone it takes up approx 1/6th of my 20" screen - and that's plenty big enough. Cost. Not cheap. but then again price is relative. You get what you pay for, especially with many cheap products. I find the Bias products have constantly improved, the upgrades are regular and are available for many OS's. I have some very technical questions that I have not been able to fathom (not with Soundsoap) and I found the company ready to assist. The product works. I use it for cleaning up material sent to me on cassette format (I produce and engineer a weekly syndicated pr-recorded talk program). It does significantly reduce unwanted noise and has a handy (but basic) EQ built in that allows you to adjust in real-time the overal sound. Sometimes with very heavy processing it can produce a highly processed end-result. This is not the fault of Soundsoap, but of the original material. You know the old saying about silk purses and sows ears. I have overcome this by simply utilizing other plug-ins, Graphic and sometimes parametric EQ as examples. It does a great job on taking out "clicks" on vinyl. As I said in a response to another review on this product, if you are dealing with a 'gash' on your vinyl as opposed to a scratch - DON'T expect Soundsoap to remove it, nothing can except some careful editing which Peak Pro will allow you to do. Absolutely A1 on removing 50/60 cycle hum. NEVER had a problem with stability or freezing, and I mean never! Once you have mastered the basics, it is great to move into it's advanced features. Sometimes the manual get's a bit wordy, usually I jump into using the app at this point, play around then go back to the manual. Many times I have found it to be intuitive enough not to have even needed the manual. [alert admin]

April Fools !!

Hmm, downloaded onto iMac, followed instructions - nothing! Not a thing. There is no preferences, there is no way to turn on/off any function (despite the instructions), went to my page, nothing on it except the instructions to download it. The only thing I disagree about with the previous writeris, that if it were an April Fools joke i may find it amusing. I even dumped it and reinstalled. Checked that my…

Real Easy....

.... as long as you don't overdose on stupidity pills like I just did. When you open TT Pro, go up to the TT Pro menu, you don't click on 'About', but the 'CHECK FOR UPDATES' which is below it. Sorry ;)

Real Easy....

Simply open TT Pro, go to 'About' - it will automatically tell you if there is an update (in this case 5.0.6) and will summarise the features. Click download/install - and the rest happens automatically. Can't get any easier. :)

10 Photography Pet Peeves We’d Throw Down a Black Hole

Wow! Do you have an inflated idea of what photography is about! I have had almost as many photos copied and presented FOR SALE as if the copier had owned the original, as music copied. Sometimes I'm happy for film, vid or sound to be sampled/copied - sometimes I'm not. It's my call and i appreciate the watermarking so my work doesn't get ripped off. In an ideal world where everyone…

"Your network settings have been changed by another application"

This had me pulling the roots of my hair out - affecting both my Powermac and Powerbook. Wish I could claim this was my discovery, as it's a very simple (partial) solution. It does not fix the problem - BUT, it overcomes it.

Just go into sys preferences, then click on security, then click on require password to unlock each secure system preference. Voila, no more loopy message! :)

one more time: SIGH!!

You guys are amazing. If you're going to slam a company (and yes, Bias can certainly improve, i do agree that understanding what the upgrades consist of can be a bit off-putting) - BUT, again ...wrong info being given by a reviewer. You most certainly CAN run Peak on two machines, legally and at the same time. You complain about the new authorising system ... well, try running any 'damned dongle' protected…

there is a pattern ? Hmmmmm!

Hmmmm - looking for patterns often indicates anal retentive or a psychosis! I am NOT in any way associated with the development of this product. I have used it since the early days. I do use it for converting mp3 to aif/aiff, and for converting sample rate in preparation of burning sound files to DVD (for archiving) - as part of my radio job. I do use some top end…

Trash License Plan- Why??!!

Look,I find it hard to understand the real issue here. The cost of this product is sooooo small, compared to almost every other music app or plug in. Much more expensive apps are machine specific, eg. Peak. The reality is that if it's not machine specific you will have many people buying and sharing with fiends, and not being machine specific it will run - and Steve looses needed funds.

Why…
