Microsoft Intellipoint 6.10.157.0 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Finally, comparable to 4.12 again!

I tried every version of IntelliPoint 5, but each had something different wrong with it. After sticking with 4.12 for a while, I decided to try 6. It's got everything I liked from 4.12: * The buttons can be application-specific. * You can set the buttons so games recognize the middle as Mouse 3, and the sides as Mouse 4 and Mouse 5. * IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 is recognized as a mouse type. There are some cool new features too, but I don't really use them yet. Maybe I will when I find a specific need: * Instant Viewer: a clone of Mac OS X's Expose, but not as pretty (and I wish I could bind this to a keyboard key). * Precision Booster: on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment (cool idea, but I almost always have all 5 buttons bound to game functions). * Gaming Toggle: record keyboard sequences on-the-fly (another cool idea, but I haven't used it yet). The one thing this version STILL lacks is something I've only found in IntelliPoint for Mac OS 9: customizing the scroll wheel's actions! Now I realize there's little demand for this, but I've had a few circumstances that I've wished for this feature (which would go along perfectly with application-specific button mapping). Overall version 6 is worth using, and fixes all the nasties of version 5. If you're using 4, consider upgrading. If you're using 5, DEFINITELY upgrade! [alert admin]

GifBuilder Carbon 1.0 (Mac OS X)

This Version Has Poor CLUT Management

Several options in the Options:Color menu don't work properly in this version. These are vital for making good-looking animated GIFs! I was thrilled to see GifBuilder come out in Carbon form, but I'm going to have to keep using 0.5 in classic environment for now. I would love for the author to fix things so the carbon version is as powerful as v0.5. You can download v0.5 here: http://www.mac.org/graphics/gifbuilder/ [alert admin]

MechWarrior 2 1.2 (Mac OS 9)

Rave Patch Location

The RAVE patch is now hosted here: http://www.raptor007.com/downloads/mechwarrior2/MechWarrior2_RAVE_patch.sit Update MechWarrior 2 to v1.2 before you install the RAVE patch. MechWarrior 2 RAVE works perfectly with ATI Rage128. Unfortunately, MechWarrior 2 RAVE works very poorly with most 3Dfx RAVE drivers, and won't work in Mac OS X at all. However, you can use the RAVE version's MechWarrior Shell with the original v1.2's MechWarrior Sim 601 to make the software rendering work in Mac OS X (tested 10.4.6 only). Not RAVE Related: NetMech will crash on the Avon: King of the Hill map if you have a G3 or newer. So far I've found no fix for this. [alert admin]

Senuti 0.32 (Mac OS X)

Perfect! Definitely the best.

I've tried every iPod copy utility out there, and Senuti is definitely the best. And it's FREE! In addition to giving files meaningful names and organizing into folders according to your preferences, it will also recover playlists and put all your data back into iTunes. Perfect for recovering your music library after a reformat, or copying a favorite playlist to another Mac. My only request is being able to name songs Arist - Track.mp3 rather than just Track.mp3, but since the source code is available I'll try to add that for myself. :¬) [alert admin]

The Sims 2 1.0 Rev C (Mac OS X)

Create-a-Family causes freeze in Rev C!

The create-a-family section frequently causes The Sims 2 to freeze when using Rev C. The problem goes away if I delete the program folder and reinstall, but then I lose the other benefits of Rev C, such as improved framerate. I recommend people use a non-updated copy to create families, and Rev C to actually play. Hopefully a new Rev D patch will address this. [alert admin]

Firefox 1.5b2 (Mac OS X)

Amazingly fast now!!

I've been using Firefox for Windows since early betas, and for Macintosh since the moment it became available. And now this version (1.5b2) is truly amazing! Unbelievably, Firefox is zippy fast now. The program opens almost immediately, even though I have several plugins installed. Firefox 1.5b2 on my Mac makes the Firefox with Preloader on my Windows machine seem slow to load by comparison. And pages load in a flash. You click, it's there, almost no wait whatsoever. Gone are some of the annoying quirks that have plagued recent versions of Firefox for Mac, such as broken middle-click and not being able to open a new window when the program is running with no windows open. And fortunately, Firefox 1.5b2 is still working perfectly with my favorite extensions, such as Tabbrowser Extensions. For those of you who shied away from Firefox due to its sluggish nature, give it another try now. Version 1.5b2 is lightning fast, but with all the functionality that 1.0.x versions have (and then some). This is undeniably the world's best web browser. [alert admin]

F/A-18 Operation Iraqi-Freedom 1.04 (Mac OS X)

This is just a game, people!

I've always loved playing Graphsim's F/A-18 Hornet games, and this is no exception. And while I'm personally against the war in Iraq, it doesn't keep me from enjoying this game. If you guys want to go back and forth debating the real war, find a different place to do it please. This section is for reviewing this game, not the US's foreign policies. [alert admin]

Doom 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Wonderful! I don't see why everyone's upset...

My framerates are great! I've got a dual 1.8GHz G5 with GeForce 6800 Ultra and 1GB RAM, and I'm running on Insane graphics at 1024x768 with 4x antialiasing. The only speed issue I have is that there's a noticable pause the first time I go somewhere new, but this is probably unavoidable due to the huge amount of texture data included in "Insane" graphics mode. Perhaps a little more precaching is in order from the developers, or maybe 1GB of RAM is cutting it too close for Insane graphics mode. Personally, I think the gameplay is great... just in a different way than many other games. If you like scary movies, you'll love Doom 3. The atmosphere, enriched by the ultra-realistic graphics, will scare you. Play it at night, in the dark, with headphones or loud speakers, and you'll feel like you really are trying to sneak through hell. Being able to hear the audio logs and read the emails of the people who work at the UAC facility adds another level of immersion that hasn't been seen in a video game since the terminals of the Marathon series. You get the backstory, in bits and pieces, as interpreted by the other characters living in it. Anyway, Doom 3 definitely needs some serious hardware, but once you're properly equipped to play it, the experience makes it all worthwhile... if you don't mind getting scared. [alert admin]

Amaryllis 0.982 (Mac OS X)

Great work! Much easier than the PC version.

I tried getting XLink Kai to work on my PC but never could, so I always used XBConnect. Once my PC died, I was sad to find that the Mac XBConnect, Aquaduct, was broken. However, XLink Kai was easy to use with Amaryllis and it's been great for getting into Halo and Halo 2 games. The XLink Kai network is pretty nice, too! Feels a little less laggy than XBConnect, too, but I could be wrong. [alert admin]

NoSleep 3.0 build 3 (Mac OS X)

Also: NetMech works in 10.4.6!!

I played a NetMech game between my Mac OS 9.2.2 G3 and my Mac OS X 10.4.6 G5 using OT Internet. Worked perfectly! Make sure you change your screen resolution to match your cockpit resolution, or mouse control will be messed up. Software rendering only goes up to 1024x768. RAVE (single-player only) only goes up to 640x480.

Haven't seen this problem...

I haven't had any problems with graphics loading. Maybe you have Adblock blocking these images?

Fun, yes, but also expensive.

I played Clan Lord a lot back when it was a beta that was free for everyone. It was a lot of fun and I did want to keep playing, but as everyone else has said, it really doesn't seem worth the money. Right now I can't wait to fix my PC so I can get into Guild Wars (no monthly fee). :¬)
