Business Card Composer 4.4.1 (Mac OS X)

Elegant, sophisticated, editing shines with arrow keys

In my 15+ years as a Mac user, this is the best $40 I ever spent. Not only does it give virtually unlimited ability to create exactly what your mind visualizes for business cards quickly and efficiently, but I also utilized the many well thought out features to replicate (from scratch) an offset printed detailed identification card for our club (2-1/4 x 3-1/2, portrait). Editing is possible on an extremely fine level of movement by using the arrow keys in lieu of the mouse. Placement of any element is available via the inspector to 1/100th of an inch, left, right, up, and down. Cropping can be done also via arrow keys (in lieu of mouse) to crop just from one side or just from the top or just from the bottom, and again, via inspector, to within 1/100th of an inch. Custom design of layout for printing is quick and easy for non-standard papers (including two-sided printing, either auto or manual). Merging from a text file is provided, including graphics/photographs and serial numbers for auto generation of two-sided ID cards for the entire list of members. Documentation could be more complete, but, if you don't see it in the documentation, just try it, it may well work. There was nothing that I wanted to accomplish that the program did not provide in a clear and intuitive manner. Use your imagination and this program can probably accomplish almost anything you can conceive. So far I have not needed to use tech service. [alert admin]

iGlasses 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Features all that are promised and more!

Using with Mac mini, external iSight and System 10.4.10. This software does absoutely everything it claims flawlessly. More effective than claimed, works wonders with low light problems with the iSight. The zoom and pan feature are amazing. I join the others who say best $9.95 I ever spent!!!! [alert admin]

Data Backup 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)

New usage tips for full clone backup

I obtained this program for use with a new miniStack V2 external drive for my Mac mini. My principal intended use was to clone my internal hard drive to the new external (firewire) drive. I printed out the manual and read the recommended procedure for the first backup (which was a clone of the complete internal hard drive). The manual was complete and gave detailed information on partition types for Intel Macs, which proved very helpful. After performing the backup, however, the external drive would not boot. After a redo produced the same result I called Prosoft Tech Service, who answered almost immediately. I was most impressed with the quick answer of my call and the thorough response (they examined my logs) and within a few minutes was given the solution. The answer was that the default settings when clone the full internal drive is chosen include two "rules" to exclude certain file types. These rules must be removed - no rules or scripts should be included in the backup to produce a bootable copy. Also, "Missing Items" should be left set to "Leave". As I have only been using the program for 2 days, I will not yet attempt a complete review. However, in general so far the program performs just as represented. Especially impressive is the detailed interface which not only gives extensive information on exactly what actions will be taken, but also allows adjustment of virtually every parameter to produce precisely the results desired. Data Backup looks to address all my needs and I anticipate it will be the only such software I will need. [alert admin]

iCab X 3.0b352 (Mac OS X)

Printing Bug

This version has a major bug in printing - all text in converted into prism like bars of color, no letters print. Graphics do print ok. iCab technical support replied to my e-mail thus: "This is a bug of the "classic" release of Quicktime 6. Because Apple won't fix this anymore, the only solution at the moment would be to downgrade to Quicktime 5 or older or to upgrade to MacOSX. I'm still looking for a workaround for this quicktime bug." Signed: Alexander Clauss Since I can't print web pages at the moment, I have to decide if I am willing to downgrade my QuickTime 6.0.3 back to 5.0.5, which is the last version available on the Apple web stie. Hopefully a work around for this problem can be found soon. I have also noticed that clicking on a new link before the last one is finished downloading will sometimes cause a system freeze. You must keep a sharp eye out on the yellow moving taxi graphic in the upper right corner to avoid this. While a bit slower than IE, it does handle newer web pages considerably better. [alert admin]

iCab 3.0b352 (Mac OS 9)

Will not print text

My iitial trial of 3.0b 352 was extremely disappointing due to the fact that printing of web pages has a major bug. All text is converted into prism like colored bars and no letters appear! Graphics do print fine however. Attempts to change various settings so far have not remedied the problem. Also, I have had 3 instances of freeze up (running System 9.1) so far. It may be necessary to watch the taxi graphic box in the upper right to assure it is no longer moving before hitting return, I will know more in the next few sessions. However, the printing problem renders this useless for the vast bulk of my browsing. Speed seems just a little slower than IE 5.1, however, IE has some pages it does not like and will not load, whereas, iCab handles all of these pages flawlessly so far. Speed [alert admin]

Will not print text

Turns out the text printing problem is a bug in Apple's QuickTime 6. After being advised of this by iCab tech support, I was able to test on another computer also on System 9, but with QuickTime5, and text prints out just fine.
