FileSalvage 5.1 (Mac OS X)

All Hail File Salvage 5.1!

Powerbook 10.4.9 Transferred a folder over network, canceled an overwrite, then deleted originals. Oops! Everything after the canceled overwrite never transferred, all originals gone :::poof::: AUGH! Had File Salvage from previous fiasco but never used it. First attempts on File Salvage failed (the user friendly options for deleted files). Tried the "expert" settings. File Salvage froze at file 2713 with a few hundred left. It took some sorting, but I found all the lost files- I think. jpegs and pdfs. Gotta love it. THANK YOU File Salvage! [alert admin]

SimpleMovieX 3.0fc2 (Mac OS X)

Edits MPEG

I used Simple MovieX 3.0fc2 demo version to cut and trim an mpeg movie- easy as pie. My system: 10.4.6 powerbook g4 10 second delay before processing to consider buying it. It worked, I bought it, that's all! I haven't tried the other features, but I bought it to trim and cut mpegs from my digital camera. [alert admin]

emlx to mbox Converter 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Bless You 1000 times, 1,000,000 times

It would take too long to spell out the troubles I was having, bottom line I lost my Mail.app emails after upgrading to Tiger. Rebuild just lost MORE email. No help from anywhere possible, no replies to posts in Apple discussions. I found this fabulous article:
http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/mac911/2005/11/archiveemlx/
In case that link fails, here's the points from the article:
With earlier versions of Mail, an mbox file contained the entire contents of a particular mailbox—all the messages in your primary account’s Inbox, for example. Mail 2.0 works differently in that it stores messages individually as .emlx files within a Messages folder within a .mbox folder (purportedly this change was made so Spotlight could index the contents of Mail messages)....
The trick then is converting the .emlx files to a format that can be read by another email client. I’ve managed to find a way to do just that with a copy of CosmicSoft’s donation-ware emlx to mbox Converter.
It works like this: Launch emlx to mbox Converter and then launch Mail 2.0. In Mail 2.0 select a mailbox you want to archive and drag it to the Desktop to create a .mbox folder. (Alternatively you can create a new folder in Mail 2.0, toss into it any messages you want to archive, and drag that folder to the Desktop to create the .mbox folder.) Switch to the Finder, open the .mbox folder and then open the Messages folder within to reveal the .emlx files. Select all of the .emlx files and drag them into emlx to mbox Converter’s window to add the files to the utility’s list. Click Save mbox.
This clumps the many .emlx files together into a single, old-fashioned mbox file (found within a .mbox folder created by the utility) that can be read by most email clients. Name the .mbox folder and save it to the Desktop. Open that .mbox folder in the Finder and rename the .mbox file within to something catchy like “Archived.”

With emlx converter I managed to convert the new mail in Tiger mail into useful mbox form and then import the new mail converted mboxes back into the old Panther Mail app.
At least my mail is whole again, and I can go to another email program, and I have a back up of all my mail while I go figure out a new mail program to use in Tiger.
I was up poop creek for 5 days until I found this converter and that article (and my Panter mail back up).
I came back to VT to post this information and to make sure the money I am donating gets to the developer. Bless you. Bless you. A thousand times, a million times. [alert admin]

Transmit 3.5.6 (Mac OS X)

Having DL/UL Problems? Don't Upgrade

Getting the "server closed connection" error? My new host was just not working with Transmit, even after I paid to upgrade to 3.5.6. New host tech support was stumped, the nice people at Panic (Transmit) were stumped and said in the end that they had another user with the exact same problem. Panic told me this only after several days of trying to work it out after I told them I tried Yummy and Yummy worked without a problem. Apparently the other user also fixed their problem by using Yummy, appreciate them telling me that, if only after the fact. We had tried OS 10.3.9, OS 10.4.8, batch, queue, using another ISP in another state, powerbooks and macbookpro, CuteFTP8, Cyberduck, we even tried using a PC with WS_Ftp and Filezilla- NOTHING worked. I also bought a new router. I wish I had read the recent reviews here before I wasted so much time, brain power, hard drive space- not to mention the upgrade fee. I don't like to put anyone down, but I am posting here so that I can post no stars and bring down the overall rating, the point is to draw attention to another user like me who may not otherwise read the reviews -by looking at the stars. Transmit was great for 4 years, rock solid, easy to use. If you try the demo version and it works, great, and good luck to you- but if you find yourself here because Transmit stopped working for you, don't pay to upgrade. Try something else. In my case, Yummy works. And I also dislike the changes from 2.x. I couldn't tell where this version left off when it closed the connection. I couldn't tell the order in which it was downloading directories. The Queue and Batch functions make little sense. The sync doesn't allow you to check file size so if you have a 0kb file, sync figures you have the file. I am sorry to post so negatively but I lost way too much being loyal to this software. I wouldn't wish it on someone else. [alert admin]

Yummy FTP 1.5.3 (Mac OS X)

Yummy Saved My Site

Getting the "server closed connection" error? Download Yummy FTP. My new host was just not working with Transmit, even after I paid to upgrade to 3.5.6. New host tech support was stumped, the nice people at Panic (Transmit) were stumped and said in the end that they had another user with the exact same problem, also fixed with Yummy (later Panic said to turn off passive, but my host said turn on passive, and I had had enough already). We had tried OS 10.3.9, OS 10.4.8, batch, queue, using another ISP in another state, powerbooks and macbookpro, CuteFTP8, Cyberduck, we even tried using a PC with WS_Ftp and Filezilla- NOTHING worked. As a last resort, I tried Yummy on the demo version. Right out of the box, Yummy downloaded my whole site without a problem. I could see the logs as it downloaded, I haven't even begun to play with all the options. I had to post this feedback, my first, and like others will RUN to give the people at Yummy my money. Bless you Yummy folks. [alert admin]

Problem Program

"I suppose it is possible there is an FTP bug that affects a user somewhere, but I have never seen it myself. I would take the report much more seriously if it was not double posted and did not advertise a similar product." I understand your skepticism based on multiple posts and advertising a similar products. When I didn't have a problem with Transmit- since 2002- I would have said the same thing. BUT…
