ImageMagick 6.3.9 (Mac OS X)

Archaic stuff

Bytesmiths, using photoshop, I can spend a couple of seconds to do any batch processing with it!! And I can prepare very complex batch actions visually. Better, I don't need to pay attention to a language syntax or to a command spelling error! The true great apps are those that can do complex stuff in an easy way for users. Imagemagick can be a great curiosity for programmers but will always be a niche for those who like to delirate by being able to rotate an image writing 5 words and a couple of characters. I don't have time for that so I like to rotate mine by drooping a menu, sorry. I use extensively open source software and I always encourage the groups of developers to pay as much attention to the GUI's as to the quality of underlying code. Some projects are moving toward this way of thinking and are experiencing success, such as NEOOFFICE, GIMP, GRASS, QGIS, every flavor of LInux operative systems and so on. These code only "apps" are great as prototypes to test code but are archaic applications as user experience. [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X Intel 10.4.8 (Mac OS X)

Macbook pro 17

Since this update my MBP 17 does not recognize the presence of the battery. The computer simply shutdown after i take off the AC adapter cord. Without the ac adapter the computer makes a startup noise (not the startup chime thought) but remains black. [alert admin]

Gizmo 2.0.0.161 (Mac OS X)

Bogus?

After a few hours of free land calls, you will not be able to do them anymore. Even if the user you are calling to is also a registered and active Gizmo user. This software seems to have a very arbitrary policy about who can call to landlines for free and wo can not. I'm going to renew my Skype out credit. At least, with Skype, i can count on clear using rules. Even the male voice that warns you to buy call out credits is erratic. Sometimes it appears and others it will just shut off your connection. With Skype starting to allow free calls to landlines (in France it's now possible), i suppose that Gizmo will become vaporware. [alert admin]

Gizmo 2.0.0.161 (Mac OS X)

Impressive!!

This is the best VoIP for Mac by far. It's not much better than Skype in features and communication quality, but the price to call for landlines (and mobiles in certain countries - not mine unfortunately :( ) is unbeatable. [alert admin]

Gizmo 2.0.0.157 (Mac OS X)

Not Cheap

Every VoIP software released for the MAC plattform is a great new. In this case I think that Skype still makes some points because the calls for regular phones are cheaper and, sometimes, a lot cheaper. Calls for regular phones do not always work as expected with Gizmo. I've never been able to make a call to a mobile phone for instance, while in Skype is instataneous. Keep on the good work thought. Parallels Desktop 2.2.1842.7 (Mac OS X)

Problem with copression

Beaware that "Running Parallels Compressor" with a windows XP VM will make some files desapear and will possibly corrupt some installed aplications. Windows Movie maker, all sample material in the My Documents folder will be erased for instance. [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Mac OS X)

Safari

Safari is completly messed up. Crash when I do a reset or when I close a open blank window. Very very unstable. I had to revert to version 1.2.4 and it's working fine. Hey Apple, do not try to imitate microsoft. I think that a broader group of beta testers is needed. I hope that Tiger won't bring me too much headaches. Apple has been trying to limit the access of Tiger from a broader group of users but I Hope that the costs won't be harmfull for the product final quality. [alert admin]

Great app

Bonesb, you must check for other problems in your system because, here in my machine, Canvas X it's rock solid with any crash untill now. If you were using version 7, you must get used to the way version 9 or X works first. They are a lot different. Canvas does not work properly if you have any processor consuming task in the background. Even background apps from colaborative projects such as Setiathome or Climateprediction, turn Canvas very slow. Be sure to switch them off first. For the first time Macintosh Users have a complete solution to import, edit and export Esri Shape files without loosing any attribute. Canvas also imports and exports Geotiff files flawlessly. I have not tested dwg or dxf files yet. By now Canvas it's a robust solution for deal with GIS info on a Mac and it's precision it's unbeatable for technical work. Illustrator and Freehand only achieve the needed precision for technical drawing with expensive external add-ons. Unique features such as point to point image warp are outstanding. Canvas as a long history of being app with some bugs but, by now, it's at least as solid has version 9. It's a valuable upgrade for Canvas 9 users, mainly those that were already using the GIS features. [alert admin]

Skype 0.14.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Conference Call

You can indeed access the conference call from the Call->Start conference call menu. I'm wondering what's that Voicemail feature into the preferences ;-) If it is what i'm thinking, it will be nice to have such a feature. For now still has nothing there. Skype it's an outstanding software, mainly for the Skype out feature. It's getting better ... [alert admin]

Comparison to Captivate/Camtasia?

I don't know Captivate (never used). Screenflow it's a lot better than Camtasia. It takes a great benefit from leopard only technologies. It's very powerful when you start to edit your screen captures. The best I have ever seen. See the videos in the developer's site.
