Status Screen Saver 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Needs work

2 of the screensavers I use most do not work with this. Both BOINC (used for SETI screensaver) and G-Force do not work. The NetNewsWire icon shows at the bottom of a black screen and the 2 mentioned screensavers never show. [alert admin]

NewsFire 1.2 (v44) (Mac OS X)

1.1 v36 was last stable version for me

Not only does version 1.2 (v44) and (v43) reset feed queues, I have had problems with the interface no longer advancing the feeds as it should. I repeatedly find that these versions of Newfire refuse to advance to the next article when the spacebar is pressed. They work for 4 or five articles, then I am forced to click one of the feed groupings on the left for a new article to load. About 4 or 5 articles later, it again refuses to advance. Fortunately, I have gotten in the habit of archiving version 1.1 (v36). I revert to it and things return to normal. The author has not responded to my email regarding the problem. Not by email, and more importantly, not by releasing a fix. Can't recommend the latest revisions, but have loved the program up until then. [alert admin]

DesktopPublisher Pro 2.2.5 (Mac OS X)

Not the professional app it claims to be

The description claims this is for power users wanting professional looking designs and that it has features experienced graphic designers will appreciate. Others have already mentioned the problems with text editing and needed improvements to the interface. Color support is clearly for novices wanting something to print on their home inkjet, though even a high end digital press like the Xerox 6060 would give good results too. The problem is that importing eps files does not add the colors in the eps to the color list for use in other layout elements or for printing spot separations. This is for any color, including Pantone colors, which ARE the industry standard for professional design. Pantone color libraries are not part of this application in any way. Suppose you are a novice and have no clues what Pantone colors are. Not an unusual scenario. Now suppose you want a print shop to print your layout on their press. You've used the perfect color graphics you want, and the color photos you took with your digital camera. Unfortunately, the only colors that will be separated at print time are those pre-defined and those you've manually added. All the spot colors in your graphic files do not separate, nor do your photos separate into Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK), assuming you've already converted those photos from the RGB standard used by digital cameras into CMYK. All those colors that are needed for correct printing of your design get dumped onto the Black separation. This is a BIG problem. If all you need is something to print on your color inkjet or laser printer, this may be a great program. The price certainly is right. If that had been the description for this program, I would probably give it 3 or 4 stars. Instead, the description uses phrases such as "power users", "professional quality designs" and "experienced graphic designers" as well as calling itself a "Pro" quality program. In that regard, it definitely falls way short. If you want your layout printed on your local print shop's press, avoid this program, save your money and buy programs that ARE pro quality, such as InDesign, Quark Xpress, Illustrator, Freehand, even an old copy of Pagemaker. There's a reason why they are so popular with professional designers and print shops and why these professionals rarely accept files from any other programs such as DesktopPublisher Pro. Marketing for this product needs to be more accurate and focused toward those it can really help, not mislead buyers into thinking the program is better than it is. [alert admin]

PC-Mac PasswordVault Lite 3.2 (Mac OS 9)

Not very mac-like, makes user work more than the program does

Not very impressed with the interface, overly clutterered and the icons' meanings are unclear until you move the cursor over them. Too much work to make the stored info useful. First, you have to click the website button, browser launches to website. Good as far as it goes. Then you have to go back into PasswordVault and click on the user button, switch back to your browser and paste into the user field. Then you go back to PasswordVault again, click on the password button, switch back to the browser again and paste into the password field. It's almost enough to make you think these folks don't realize you're using a computer that can automate the process. For my money, PasswordWallet has a much better interface. The icon/buttons make sense. All your stored info is presented in a list rather than one at a time in a pop-up window, so you get to the info quicker. Launching the website for a password pre-loads the username and password at the same time so that a single keystroke inside your browser pastes both the username and password into the browser fields. Extensis Suitcase 11 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

This is NOT a product of Font Reserve integration

Peterpica: according to Extensis' site, Suitcase X1 is NOT the result of any Font Reserve integration, which is a relief since it doesn't come close to the features I look for and love in Font Reserve. No word on when the integrated product will come out or what it will be called or the feature set, so it's still wait and see. [alert admin]

iViewMediaPro2Entourage 1.1 (Mac OS X)

iView Media Pro already does this? Tell me how.

digitol_lobo, I've checked and rechecked and my copy of iView Media Pro 1.5.7 for OS X does NOT have this feature. I don't tend to be dense, but under what command does it resize photos and embed them directly into an email, ready for me to send? I don't want to pay extra for a feature I already have, but your comments appear to have no basis in fact. Save me some money and prove me wrong, please, otherwise I'll have to believe this is a pretty good add-on for iView Media Pro. [alert admin]

Problems noted by…

others are not universal. This updater (second, "Official" 5.2 updater) worked flawlessly for me without reading any special installation instructions. Just downloaded, doubleclicked, accepted the license and clicked install. Worked perfectly, as has every single installer I've received from Roxio. Nothing but great software and hassle-free installation. I'm using B&W G3 300 Mhz on OS 10.2.1. [alert admin]

Symantec NAV virus def Mar (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Vikingz2000: Live-Update is…

definitely the preferred way, but not always a viable option... I work for a small company. Only one Mac has email/internet access. ALL Macs get disks from clients, disks which may be virus/worm infected because the client has no protection. On those Macs w/out internet access, a downloaded updater from VT (or other source) is a necessity. [alert admin]

OmniGraffle 2.0b (Mac OS X)

slboettcher2: I understand…

your frustration. If you're still having problems, control click on the download link and save the file to disk. The file name gets truncated, so add .dmg extension and it should double click open fine after that. [alert admin]
