CardRaider 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Not bad, but try Graphic Converter as well ![]()

It works — sort of. But, it may have saved the day… I prolly corrupted my 8G CF by using a two-buck card reader (pins prolly bent). Anywayz, I came home and popped my new CF from the camera and inserted it in the reader, didn't mount. I put the reader back in camera and the Nikon D200 was asking me to reformat card. OMG!! So I checked VersionTracker for a CF program and CardRaider was the only available for OSX. I tried the demo version and it mounted card and started pulling up images. I cancelled scan and tried opening the, now mounting, card in Nikon's Picture Project which stops when it reaches "corrupted file." So I bought full version of Card Raider and ran it after deselecting default preferences (which I recommend) and it ran find in spite of me not RTFM (not recommended). Anywayz, CR pulled up 176 out of 216 images, "NOT BAD" for a 20 buck shareware little app! But after, CF was through playin Graphic Converter pops up and informed me that it wanted to try gettin 217 image, so I figgered that my old trusty GC (has fixed many problem files over the years) deserved a shot. Whaddyaknow? I pulled up all 217 RAW files (15.5M each) without a hitch! So… I don't know if Graphic Converter would have been able to mount the CF card like CardRaider did. Next time I'll use GC first to see. But if your CF ain't mounting, CR might be something that you might wish you had. BTW, I also tried Adobe lightroom on the card and it's downloading all 217 images fine, even though Nikon Picture Project still punks out on that job. I like PP couse it downloads faster than anything else and it handles metadata well. thass alll RAW [alert admin]

Fontographer 4.7.3 (Mac OS X)
Outside of porting it to OSX, I don't see any new features or fixes. It isn't even aware of OpenType or glyphs — as far as I can tell. Don't understand why this is v4.7, it doesn't have any new tricks and really looks mouldy. It should be v.4.2, but what do I know? It's still FOG — which I've owned since the Altsys days — and it's great to have it acknowledged. Hopefully, v5.0 will see something new. It's still as easy to use as ever. Now if they can only get BorderMaker back up we'd, at least, be able to use some of our old tricks that we spent many hours designing in Fontographer v3 Most annoying are the download links, many have been reporting problems with the purchased links page for over six months, and they still haven't worked the bugs out of that. I wonder what that portends… I can't recommend that anyone shell out for the full version yet. Better to wait and use whatever your using now. The Mac upgrade price is fair, but I'm not optimistic that the upgrades — going forward — will be a bargain. RAW [alert admin]

Linotype FontExplorer X 1.0fc4 (Mac OS X)
It was promising, but I shoulda smelled the … Many pros had "heard" good things about FontExplorer, but I was unable to find any InDesign or Quark pros that risked their workflow to try it out. Following the anemic recommendations didn't pan out. It didn't move the fonts easily and if I didn't have the foresight to back up the old system fonts on another drive, everything would have been lost. I tried many of the cache cleanup scenarios which only made things worse. Several obvious bugs popped up, which I reported. Still waiting to hear from Linotype. The most obnoxious was that the Font Book Character Palette came up at every turn and couldn't be disabled. My biggest complaint is that there is no uninstall feature. Finally, I had to do the dreaded System re-install of Tiger to get things working so I could get back to work and forget the nightmare of lost hours. It is a promising app, and if it can ever get out of the "Alpha" stage and test well with pros, I might give it another try. Meanwhile, I'm optimistic that there might be something good to try next week at MacWorld Expo [alert admin]

ResponseGenerator 1.0 (Mac OS X)
The true spirit of Freeware, it frees up time creatively … ![]()

Let's face it. Sometimes, we wish to remain thoughtless, but don't want to be "too" rude. What this promising app does is to fill in the gap when you just rather not wrap your mind around a response. It defers the relationship to another time. Some of the generated responses are far better than one might intend. They could actually encourage the recipient. Life is full of pretenses … Looking forward to new features. [alert admin]

ZipIt 2.2.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
the droplet that "works in OSX only." I ran it in OS 9.1 and it ran without a hitch even though I hadn't yet registered ZipIt. I took advantage of that 25% discount. Why only four stars? ZipIt is primaily so we can be compatible with PC standards. They should conform to Mac standards. One day they WILL.W [alert admin]

GraphicConverter 4.5.2 (Mac OS 9)
images from my camera, they get opened and edited FIRST with Graphic Converter. Sure I have those other product that cost 10x as much, but I don't use them unless I have to. It takes panache to be a proud GC power user. It's worth the time to learn about all of its features. If you do you'll use it more than you thought you would.i [alert admin]

MacSFTP 1.0.5 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
short with recent attacks on my BSD server I had to upgrade the security profile. Trying to implement SFTP caused some trepidation. MacSFTP made it easy and Mac saavy. Only problem was that the error messges didn't give a hint that you should make your file names Unix compliant. Other than that worked without a hitch, a real bargain at $25. Thanks Jean-Pierre!f [alert admin]

Epson StylusRIP 4.50 (Mac OS 9)
to work but it slows down the printing process quite a bit from a simple straight printer connection. The upside here is that you don't need that lame key floppy anymore. I ran this sucessfully on a network and in conjunction with a PC running an expensive windoze AppleTalk emulation program. However, Epson could do it's customers a favor if they created a true server that could be accessed from any Mac-PC-Unix box on a network that either the client or server also ran on every platform. After running StylusRIP for awhile as a server on an old PowerComputing clone StylusRIP just crashed and refused to work. Once again I was surprised when an Epson tech responded to an eMail request, after two days, and gave me a clue on how to find all of the files that the Uninstaller couldn't find. Even though the files weren't where they were supposed to be (prolly the reason it wasn't working) I tracked them all down by the file names. In any case Stylus RIP has been working since. Flabberghasted, I was that Epson finally broke down and offered some assistance to those of us who invested heavily in the more expensive days. I bought the Stylus 3000 when it was $2300 and have NEVER been able to get any tech support or upgrades for stylusRIP. It would have been cheaper-with all the time I've spent with this-for me to just buy a new printer, if I wanted some help and the latest copy of stylusRIPy [alert admin]
