Data Rescue 3.0 (Mac OS X)

bootable DVD causes kernel panic

Has anyone else had trouble booting a machine using the Data Rescue 3 bootable DVD? I have a 2.0 GHz DP Power Mac G5 that kernel panics when I attempt to boot it using the DVD. The same DVD boots a Power Mac G4 with no problem. [alert admin]

Toast Titanium 10.0.3 (Mac OS X)

is 10.0.3 for OS X 10.5+ only?

Version 10.0.2 worked fine on my system running 10.4.11, but when I attempt to start up 10.0.3, I get the following message: You cannot use the application "Toast Titanium" with this version of OS X. Does 10.0.3 require 10.5+? Or am I bumping up against some other limitation (graphics card, etc.)? [alert admin]

Carbon Copy Cloner 3.2 (Mac OS X)

CCC is an invaluable tool

I've been a fan of CCC since I first used it 6+ years ago. Over that period of time, I think I've had one problem and Mike was quite responsive when I let him know about it. I was surprised to see a number of negative reviews here. Personally, I consider it to be one of the most useful programs in my toolbox, shareware or otherwise. I've never tried SuperDuper, so I can't compare. There has never been a reason for me to look beyond CCC because it gets the job done. [alert admin]

Retrospect 8.0b1 (Mac OS X)

8.0b1 is Intel-only

Although EMC claims in the release notes that the final version will run on PPC Macs, 8.0b1 is Intel-only. Even though I don't currently have an Intel Mac handy to try the beta on, the liner notes were worth a read. This is a significant overhaul. The server and console components have been separated. The server component runs as a daemon and the console can run on the same or a completely different Mac, leaving open the possibility that a single console could be used to control multiple servers. The server can also handle multiple tasks simultaneously, which seems like a big plus to me. [alert admin]

RealPlayer 11 build 884 (Mac OS X)

still beta?

I noticed that VersionTracker has dropped the beta designation for build 884. Has RealPlayer 11 for Mac OS X gone final? If I redownload RealPlayer from my Real account, I'm still being offered RealPlayer 10, not 11. That probably doesn't mean much, given that build 884 was released on Thursday. Anyone know if Real still considers 11 a beta? [alert admin]

WeatherDock 2.5 (Mac OS X)

update problem resolved

I've only been using it for about 5 hours, but the fixes made in version 2.5 to account for the changes to the weather.com feed seem to have resolved the update problem. Thanks, Alwin. [alert admin]

PGP Desktop Home 9.5 (Mac OS X)

order problems

I ordered an upgrade online, but 5 hours later I hadn't received the email with download instructions and a license key. I called PGP support and while I was talking to the woman, noticed that my receipt was for the Windows version, not Mac OS X. I'm not sure how that happened. In any case, the she cancelled my original order and I placed a new online upgrade order for the Mac OS X version. I still haven't received an email message with download instructions and a license key, however. I'm starting to wonder if Comcast might be blocking their mail. [alert admin]

DiskWarrior 3.0.3 (Mac OS X)

lack of support

I've got to agree with gryphonent that the lack of support for DiskWarrior is disappointing. I've used DW extensively, both on pre-OS X systems and those running OS X. It's been an incredibly helpful tool in most cases. Although the remedy to the recent crash problems is straightforward, as Andreas pointed out, the fact that the problem hasn't been resolved by an update from Alsoft is hard to excuse. Thanks to gryphonent for pointing out that DW turns off journaling on volumes where it was previously turned on! I hadn't noticed that behavior before and discovered this morning that, sure enough, journaling was turned off on every one of my disk volumes, even though all partitions were originally created with journaling turned on. This is another problem that definitely needs to be remedied by Alsoft. [alert admin]

10.0.3

The fact that the update contains the full suite of programs explains why the 10.0.2 update is 400+ MB in size. It doesn't explain why the 10.0.3 update is double that size. As I mentioned previously, the reason for the bloated size of the 10.0.3 update is that the image contains an older Toast 10 update in the trash folder. I alerted Roxio to the problem. Seems silly for customers to…

is 10.0.3 for OS X 10.5+ only?

After first indicating that my problem was related to the fact that I hadn't done a "clean instal" of Toast 10, Roxio support now tells me that Toast 10 is only supported on systems running OS X 10.5 or later, as if no version of Toast 10 was ever compatible with Tiger. Whatever. Toast 10.0.2 is running just fine on my system running OS X 10.4.11. I guess I'll stick with 10.0.2.

Have they pooled the update?

They haven't pulled the update. They should, because it's twice the size that it needs to be (see my response in another thread). In any case, it's easy enough to find the update if you start at the support page. Click on the SUPPORT drop down and select Software Updates, then click on the Toast 10 link.

is 10.0.3 for OS X 10.5+ only?

It appears that 10.0.3 does require OS X 10.5+. I just tried running it on a DP G5 running 10.4.11 and received the same error message I reported earlier.

10.0.3

What surprised me was the size of the zipped 10.0.3 update (800+ MB) vs. the 10.0.2 update (400+ MB). Turns out that somebody forgot to empty the trash before finalizing the 10.0.3 image for distribution! :)

More useful pre-OS X

I agree. It's worth the price of admission just to have better control over speed/acceleration.

Doesn't work with Microsoft Intellimouse

I wanted to add to my previous comment that I received a response in about 30 minutes after reporting my problem to him. I don't have a solution yet, but there's no doubt that ALM is a developer who cares about his customers.

Doesn't work with Microsoft Intellimouse

How is it failing? I'm having no luck getting it to work with a Logitech Optical Mouse, but the machine on which I tested it is a real hack job (Power Mac 7300+Sonnet Crescendo/PCI G4+Sonnet Tempo Trio running OS X 10.4.11), so I don't want to be too quick to blame the new version of USBO. On the other hand, USBO 10.4.8 was working ok on this machine. After installing USBO 3.0,…

works fine, but expensive

I was curious to know how licensing works for GeekBench, so I emailed Primate to ask and was informed that a single license covers all platforms and that licensing works on a per user, not a per machine, basis. So a single $19.95 license will allow me to benchmark all of my Windows, Mac OS X and Linux machines.

1.0.3 again installs 1.0.2

I also noticed that after "1.0.3" is installed, Microsoft AutoUpdate keeps trying over and over to apply the "critical" 1.0.3 update.
