HexEdit 2.20 (Mac OS X)

Initial impressions

I downloaded HexEdit to take a look at it. It may actually end up being a better hex editor than others I've used, but several UI issues stuck out: 1. I selected a file to view that happened to have a long filename. The editor window's title, and the title under the Window menu were both the munged 31-character version of the filename. Curious, I then tried a file whose name contained Asian kanji and kana characters, and it looks like the filename was displayed with a MacRoman encoding. C'mon people: FSRefs, Unicode, etc... 2. How about giving the user a chance to at least choose the display font size, if not which monospace font to use? That might make it easier to read. 3. "File Comparison Options" has hijacked the standard command-comma used for preferences. Why isn't there just a preferences window that lets you set comparison options, color scheme, etc.? ResFool 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Not ready to give up ResEdit, I guess...

While I agree with previous comments that this is a good first step toward a native OS X resource editor, it shouldn't be called anything but a development release, and the author shouldn't be charging anything for it right now.

Let's be clear here. I'm perfectly happy to shell out cash for a useful tool, but this one has a ways to go. The great majority of resource types I'd be likely to need to edit are graphical in nature. Having only textual resource templates just doesn't cut it when I'm trying to see how a window layout looks, for example.

Resourcerer is pricey and ResEdit requires Classic mode, but both provide full graphical editing. When ResFool can do that, I'll take another look. Then it's $20 pricetag would be a steal. [alert admin]

Acquisition 0.962 (Mac OS X)

ahhh...so much better

I heard about Acquisition a couple of weeks ago and decided to give it a try, especially since LimeWire is unnecessarily complex, sucky UI, and has a number of reliability issues. What an improvement over LimeWire! Simple, straightforward, easy to use. Gotta love it. I ran into the problem of no files available for download that stevend mentioned, but that seems to have been a temporary situation since I was able to download later in the day. Not sure if that's an issue with the network or a program bug, tho. And as for those who *censored* and moan about how pricey it is, if you don't want to pay David for his time and effort to develop and maintain Acquisition, you can always go download the basic version of LimeWire for free. Then look at the advertising as you download. :-) [alert admin]
