SoundHack 0.893 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
Can't record and then "Unexpectedly quit[s]" ![]()

Tried this under 10.3.8 and a Logitech USB headset. After choosing "Record New...", selecting the headset, and creating a file, it errors out with "Error in PaHost_OpenStream: SPBSetDeviceInfo siNumberChannnels returned -201 PaHost_OpenStream: sPaHostError = 0xffffff37." It doesn't record anything and then "Unexpectedly quit[s]" on me. Obviously unusable. I guess you get what you pay for... [alert admin]

A very sweet app. Thanks for the work. Unfortunately, Santa needs a gift of grammar and spell checking software. Santa, try using, "thank you for taking the time to write the elves and *me*," instead of, "thank you for taking the time to write the elves and I." Also, "suprise" is correctly spelled "surprise." Seems to work just fine under 10.2.8. Fast, simple (for most uses). [alert admin]

Xbench 1.1.2 (Mac OS X)
Too little weighting for dual processors... ![]()

It would seem that Xbench is overly weighted toward ONE processor in its ratings and doesn't take proper advantage of multiprocessor machines, making this app somehwat worthless when comparing machines. Why else would a *DUAL* 2 GHz G5 be only a few percent faster than a *SINGLE* 1.8 GHz G5? For anyone who doubts this, install CHUD, turn off one processor on your dualie and run the benchmarks...CPU test: 193.10 (dual 2GHz G5), 182.06 (dual 2GHz G5 w/one processor disabled with CHUD). The real world doesn't suffer this anomaly. [alert admin]

SubRosaSoft DesktopEarth 1.3 (Mac OS X)
Both money and information are valuable (anyone who thinks information isn't a valuable thing that people will pay for hasn't spent much time in the business world). The requirement for either money or personal info to use this so-called freeware really makes it indeed shareware: you have to pay to use it, and subrosasoft gets something of value in return. You can pay with money or your can pay with information, but you do pay. As a program, it looks interesting (I have downloaded it, but won't go past the nag screen), but it's not worth $5.00 or my real e-mail address. SubRosaSoft, be honest and resubmit this as the shareware that it is. There's nothing wrong with shareware. [alert admin]
