SparkME 2.8.1 (Mac OS X)

Graffix, that's great, but...

Peak DV is like $500... SparkME is free (except for the info they ask you for, admittedly). [alert admin]

Adobe Photoshop CS 8.0 (Mac OS X)

Feelin' sad.

I dunno, I just find this whole idea of activating my software by having to call the mothership whenever I install it or switch computers or whatever, to be...I dunno, "insulting?" When Windows XP started it I was glad (once again) that I used a Mac, but now Adobe has joined the same club... Well I skipped the upgrade to version 6 and went straight from Photoshop 5.5 to 7 (through sheer laziness, admittedly). Maybe now it's time for a deliberate version-skip: deny 'em a quarter or four of my profits. I also own Illustrator and GoLive, so if I skip all of them, that's $500 I don't have to pay this year...what can I do with all that money? Now I'm just ranting. I just feel like an old friend has slapped me across the face. Yuck. They have a page here explaining about it, FWIW: <http://www.adobe.com/activation/main.html> [alert admin]

Mailsmith 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Still no Japanese support?

Version 2 still appears not to support Japanese text (haven't tried other non-roman languages, but this doesn't bode well). I'll be nice and not give them a lousy rating for this, but come on, guys... OS X, Unicode, all that? [alert admin]

Hash Animation:Master 2003 10.5b (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Er...

From the Read Me (after I installed it...):

Bug Fixes
========
AM2003 10.5b 7/11/03
- Changed Mac installer to Hybrid so it can run native in OS X. (A:M is still an OS9 app.)

...isn't it a bit early to post this in the OS X section?

Besides, when I do run it, it wants some CD in my drive. I just downloaded it, eh? [alert admin]

Audio Hijack Pro 1.2.4 (Mac OS X)

Flexible

Aside from using AHP for recording Coast To Coast AM streams for later iPod listening, I also use it to capture and tweak (but not record) iChat AV audio output - adding an equalizer module lets me boost the high end of the iChat audio to compensate for people who are using the "pinhole" microphone on their iMacs or whatever. The ability to modify the captured app's audio is something I didn't really think much about when I registered this, but I find I use it quite a bit now. Wiretap looks like a nice bare-bones audio hijacker, and Ambrosia is a great developer, and that might be enough for casual users. AHPro though has these advantages for people who want more flexibility:

  • You can set up a list of timed recordings to match assorted streaming broadcasts (or just to record a few things in a row while you sleep).
  • You can modify a specific app's audio output with various effects like an equalizer and stuff.
  • Since you're only hijacking a certain app's audio, other apps can make all the noise they want, and it won't effect the recorded stream.
I could write a script to force Wiretap or something to do timed recordings (well, I assume I could), but my time is worth more than the $30 it took to register this... [alert admin]
