Machines at War 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Terrific strategic combat game

In Machines at War, you manage not only tactical forces, but the military-industrial complex behind those forces. You begin with a small amount of resources that you can deploy to grow your wealth (by building ore diggers), construct factories to build offensive machines and repair vehicles, build power plants crucial to their operation, erect defensive walls, construct airports that provide you with an airborne force, conduct research and development that provide you with more powerful offensive and defensive tools, and send out recon units. At the beginning of each game, you can also dictate the geography -- from desert to frozen tundra to forest, some of which determines how far you must go -- and fight for -- crucial resources. Finally, you can dial in your skill level, from newbie to expert. This ranks among the best $19.95 I've ever spent. For awhile, I struggled to hold my own. Gradually, you gain insight and skills. After several weeks of playing, I've reached the point where I can win every game. So it would be interesting if the computer opponent had greater skill levels to provide some surprises and sneak attacks. Still, this is an entertaining shareware offering that is recommended. GL Golf 2.01 (Mac OS X)

Pretty darn entertaining

I've played about a half-dozen Mac golf games over the past 15 years, and I'd rank this as one of the two best. The graphics are rather simplistic, but the 3D aspect of the game adds a tremendous boost. You play beside cliffs, and sometimes find the green below a bluff. Watch out for trees! They're unforgiving. I bought the basic version ($14.99 for 3 courses), but an upgrade is available for additional courses, and the developer reportedly releases more courses as time goes on. I've had quite a lot of fun for 15 bucks already. [alert admin]

Camino 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Still wonderful

This has been my favorite browser for as long as I've used OSX (more than two years), although I do have to use Firefox for one particular web site and keep IE around for those rare sites that insist on it. Grikdog1 said Camino 1.0.1 kept going to the Camino start page on every start. I've never experienced that; every version I've used (starting with v. 0.7) will do that only on the first launch of the Camino app. Afterward, it always returns to my chosen start page. Don't hesitate to use Camino or Firefox. [alert admin]

Camino 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Still my all-time favorite browser

Camino has always been good to me (been using since v 0.7 Beta), and this update seems to be just fine. I use it at work and home, and I have few problems with it. I keep Firefox handy for one specific web site where Camino doesn't work properly. I would have no issues with switching to Firefox entirely, but Camino has been so reliable, and in some cases rendered pages no other browser (Safari, IE, iCab or, at the time, Firefox) could handle. The Podcast RSS Buddy 3.0 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Excellent, easy to use iTunes podcast tool

This is really one of those wonderful tools that does one job very well -- in this case, preparing an XML file for posting a podcast for iTunes. It's simple to use. The developer's web site offers a Flash tutorial on how to use it (only takes a few minutes to view it, but it's pretty thorough). This is available for Windows or Mac. Podcast RSS Buddy allows you to prepare a .xml file that contains the info that iTunes needs: Name of podcast, name of each episode, author, time, length of podcast, etc. You can even edit info for past podcasts or delete them entirely. When you download it, you get 5 demos. In my case, that was enough to convince me that it was the tool we needed. Bear in mind, to post a podcast to iTunes, you must first register with iTunes. But it's an easy process. Our podcast was approved in less than 24 hours. [alert admin]

The Podcast RSS Buddy 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Excellent tool that's simple to use

An excellent tool. Works splendidly for putting our podcast on iTunes. (Of course, you must first register with iTunes, which proved to be a simple process. We had our approval in less than 24 hours.) Podcast RSS Buddy generates the XML code that provides iTunes with key information about your podcast, such as the name of the podcast, the name of each episode, size, length, etc. You can go back and edit the info on old episode, or you can delete old episodes if you want. The Flash tutorial on the web site takes just a few minutes but covers the product throughly. Recommended! [alert admin]

Truly amazing

It's just a shame that a product like this comes along only once a year. [alert admin]

Worked fine downloading with Software Update app

As always, I repair permissions before and after an OS update. All appears to be well. [alert admin]

Life is good

On a 17-inch flat-screen iMac: Repaired disk permissions beforehand, installed Security Update 2005-007 and Safari from Software Update, restarted, repaired disk permissions again. Safari launches, Camino launches, Software Update launches. [alert admin]

Camino 0.8.1 (Mac OS X)

Hope this fixes crashes

I've used Camino over a year, since v. 0.6 Beta, and never had a crash until 0.8. I've crashed v. 0.8 three times on two computers, one running OS 10.2.6, the other OS 10.3.4. Also, this week encountered issues with Camino forgetting certain preferences, such as where to download files. Camino has been rock-solid before 0.8. Hopefully, the best OS X browser will get back on track. Like almost everything about Camino, including the bookmark management. Wish you could choose to tab only between text fields (rather than tabbing to every item), as IE permits. Makes filling out forms quicker. Camino handles Java better than Safari. Safari (v. 1.2.2) still can't handle the Java on this page: http://www.kytc.state.ky.us/contract/ (try clicking on 2004 Lettings; it won't work). [alert admin]

Pretty neat, but sounding an alert would be great

Addendum: ReadMe claims "Added Alert sound if Severe weather statements were found," but it didn't seem to work earlier (when there was a regional alert). Also, can't see in Prefs how to activate/modify alerts (designate sound, etc.). Will monitor.
