Lux Delux 5.6 (Mac OS X)

Slow and Been Done Before

First, the demo version was what I tried and after the first game it went into extremely slow motion and became unplayable. It took 5 seconds between clicks to see any action on the screen. Second, this is Risk, sure, with a few variants to refresh the old genre, but all told a game that has been done to death. There are many, many more templates for quick strategy games out there that do not rely on the tedium and uncertainty of random conflict resolution. This is so 1970s. It does look like the developer has put decent effort into support and community. I will say that. [alert admin]

Path Finder 4.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Kept Crashing

I rally want to like this program, but it relentlessly crashed on me simply when I did a search of items on my desktop. Also, its complexity is a bit overwhelming. [alert admin]

Desktopia 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Great Idea But Not Working

First, it simply does not change my desktop at all. It is intuitive to use, accessible and easy to set up, but it juts is not working. I'm trying it with one of the default backgrounds. Second, the preview is not working. No matter what I choose, the preview window is a blank. [alert admin]

Lifeboat 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Might Be Promising, But...

I tried a number of times to do a demo backup to an external disk, but problems prevented Lifeboat from setting up a scheduled run. First, there were window and menuebar display glitches, such as the "Help" item appearing twife, and a Baskup Task appeared, only to have no name (all while the settings windo stayed open). Second, the program simply did not seem able to find my FW external drive. When I did set up a backup trial between folders on the same drive, the application was unable to complete the process 2 out of 3 times. The "OK" button just greyed out and that was as far into the program as I got despite following the Help instructions. The log showed attempts at backup, but could not load the "destination module" no matter how simple a task I created. The layout is approachable and the language choices are wise, such as using the term "update" instead of "incremental backup"; or "overwrite" instead of "full backup" as the Apple Backup software obliquely phrases things. That said, the whole "Local Folder" choice is confusing, though the implementation of Smart Folders looks promisin. The price is far too steep, however, when SuperDuper, CCC, Synk, and Apple's .Mac Backup are compared. I'd say this software is still in beta, but I am always on the lookout for new entries into the category so will keep an eye on this one. [alert admin]
