iDrum 1.72 (Mac OS X)

Absolute rubbish!

This developer implements policies which are unacceptable. You download and install the demo only to be informed o launch that it expired and you cannot use it. This is unprofessional and insulting to the extreme. Stay away from this company. It will save you dollars and a lot of stress. And some people still wonder why there's so much pirated software our there... Bad, but I guess many do it because they are driven mad by companies such as iZotope, pile of... [alert admin]

Audacity 1.3.8 (Mac OS X)

Audacity 1.3.8 will not launch

It seems that this is a common problem on any platform, at least Mac and Windows. Audacity 1.3.8 will not launch at all. Version 1.3.7 works fine. MBP, 2.4 GHz, 4GB, MacOSX 10.5.7 [alert admin]

Rax 2.1.2 (Mac OS X)

Simply ridiculous

This is one of the most ridiculous pieces of software I have ever tried. I run clean system, no third party utilities whatsoever. Everything works perfectly on my MacBook Pro. I have been performing for over twenty-five years, heavily rely on music software for my gigs (experimental classical, electroacoustic) and am quite happy to use even the least expensive shareware programmes such as the marvellous Audio Hijack Pro. But when I see a piece of software which informs me on launch that my Audio Units "failed to validate and will be ignored" I begin to see red. Stay away from this terrible joke of a programme. Spend few more bucks, but get something really reliable and behaving the way software should. Fifty dollars for this? They should pay me fifty dollars for the time I wasted trying to launch that thing. Horrid. Zero stars, period. [alert admin]

Vuze 4.2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Excellent software!

Vuze is excellent. It is simple to operate, efficient, fairly intuitive. You have several interface options to choose from, which is very nice, especially for the less advanced users. When compared to Transmission, Vuze wins hands down. I have seen people - including myself - trying both programmes and all of them, no exceptions, finally lost patience with Transmission, one of the clumsiest pieces of software I have ever had the displeasure of trying (FYI, I have been computing heavily since 1989). I just deinstalled it because I had no use for it, whereas there is much use for Vuze :-) One thing must be clear: you DO NOT have to install the Vuze Toolbar. It is but an option. Other than that Vuze is as good and unobtrusive a programme as it gets. In my opinion it has set standards by which other BitTorrent clients should be judged. While I sympathise with people using clients other than Vuze, I think the latter provides unmatched ease of use and, consequently, great comfort. Again, great, time-saving software. Highly recommended. [alert admin]

4DBK Merchant 3.2.2 (Mac OS X)

Shareware? NOT! [Appendix]

Sorry, I meant $235. Any software priced above $100 should not be considered shareware. [alert admin]

Shareware? NOT!

At $750.00 it is NOT a shareware product, it is commercial one. Any software priced above $100 should not be considered shareware. [alert admin]

LimeWire Beta 5.0.11 (Mac OS X)

Simply awful

Even for a beta this is so bad there are no words to describe this pile of crap. Stay away from it at any cost. Either keep using version 4.18 or switch to, say, FrostWire. LimeWire's future is that of the dodo bird. [alert admin]

ChronoSync 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Not worth your money

If ChronoSync 3.3.6 impressed with its speed and ease of use, its nimble flexibility and total reliability, ChronoSync 4.0.1 disappoints greatly. It is a slow and clumsy beast, and constantly chokes ("spinning beach ball," hurray!); it always asks for Keychain access - even when the option 'Always allow' is checked, ChronoSync repeatedly asks for permission to access Keychain! And without giving it that permission by clicking the appropriate button, it will not start. This is just one of the many bugs this version suffers from. But the most questionable flaw is its inability to automatically back up data, despite the schedule being properly set. No matter what I tried, ChronoSync 4.0.1 would not work in the background - it has to be activated manually, and manually only was I able to back up data. Perhaps it is my own fault, I do not know. But what I know is this: once version 3.3.6 was set according to my wishes, it worked perfectly (five stars, period). Version 4.0.1 deserves half a star, at best. Not worth your money. Hold on to the older version until the developer makes the programme usable. For now, it is not even a beta version. [alert admin]

Drive Genius 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Reluctantly recommending the product; unequivocally condemning its tech support

Drive Genius (I give it three stars) is much, much less useful and elegant that the exemplary DiskWarrior, and yet it is better than the much clumsier TechTool Pro. However, unlike some other commentators on this forum, I have had abysmal experience with ProSoft's technical support (I give it one star). My previous description of that experience was removed (this had never happened to me before), so I warn every one: ProSoft has really long hands. However, I must admit my experience was so bad I did not mince words in that comment. I still cannot come to terms with the - presumably accidental (let's give them the benefit of the doubt) - complete lack of professionalism on part of the ProSoft's representative, who did not seem to understand the simplest sentences written in English (I am not a native speaker, however I hold a Ph.D. in literature from one of the better Canadian universities, and have been computing in North America for twenty years). One advice: when you deal with their tech support, make sure you do it as infrequently as possible - and use very short, simple and intelligible sentences. Perhaps mine were too long. [alert admin]

Not worth your money

Just for the record and to make it perfectly clear: I NEVER place my apps anywhere else but in Applications or Utilities folders. I downgraded to version 3.3.6 - I keep older versions of software just in case - and am one happy camper. CS 3.3.6 is awesome, its successor, lame.

Total garbage? NOT!

Perhaps you may want to check your system configuration. On my machine, a 2007 Mac mini, 3 GB of RAM (yes, 3 not 2), no third party system enhancers, VUZE works seamlessly. It does everything it claims it can. It is well designed and fast. It is also much more effective than FrostWire and LimeWire 5 put together, the latter badly flawed and deserving of heavy criticism much more than VUZE.…

what a great application!

Man, it would be one strange app if it could not let you perform its main task without being relaunched! When you launch iDMG (the app is, indeed, excellent) you may begin dragging and dropping files and/or folders into its widow to your heart's content. This is how it works: After it's finished its first task just bring iDMG to the front using Option Tab or clicking on its icon in the Dock…

10.5.3 doesn't like InDesign CS3

It is always worth checking one's system configuration before jumping to conclusions. Registered InDesign CS3 user here. No problems at all on my machine. InDesign CS3 runs well under 10.5.3. Perhaps trashing preferences might help in cases there are ID CS3 startup problems?
