It shall get better, of course
I agree. These days software makers tend more and more often to release what amounts to beta versions. Microsoft is no different - and neither is Apple. The latter's Leopard is still a half-baked product, so when you complain about MS please keep Apple in mind, too. MS Office 2008 for Mac is not yet perfect (and never will be, it is too bloated a programme for that), but promises a lot and I believe in the end it will deliver the same way version 2004 has (by the same token Leopard will get better and better with each subsequent update). Yes, I did experience Word sudden quits, but only with one file, which I had earlier edited using NeoOffice. So, as a resort, I opened the file with Nisus Writer, converted if from .doc to .rtf, closed it and then reopened it with Word and saved is as .doc. All problems were gone just like that. It seems to me that all too often do we blame manufacturers for our own "sins." Perhaps it was a fluke, yet Word did stop quitting unexpectedly. Yes, I did experience sounds being broken in Entourage once, but I restarted my machine and everything went back to normal, sounds and all. One should also keep in mind that MS offers--I hope I am not mistaken here--three versions, at least one of which has the Exchange server option available (it is not the Home and Student Edition though). Indeed, it is disappointing, perhaps even infuriating, to use software which is not entirely reliable, but patience pays off. And again, I have seen it so many times - people swearing at software and its manufacturer whereas the problem was at their end. I would strongly recommend MS Office for Mac, if only for compatibility's sake. And please people, stop writing about how it used to be in the good old days, about beer etc., working in lumber industry, building houses of hard drive inventors, and what not. It is plain rude to use VersionTracker for such idiocies. If you need to vent your nostalgia, go join a discussion forum. VersionTracker is about talking about software, not your military history or your favourite pastime. [alert admin]

Amadeus Pro 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Amadeus Pro is quite wonderful. The developer deserves full marks for it. Yes, it is true, not only is it one of the best shareware programmes available, it is also one of the most reasonably priced. I have used Amadeus II for a very long time, but the Pro version just knocked my socks off. Of course, it is not a heavy-duty professional programme (it is not intended as such), but its elegant, intuitive interface, full integration with a multitude of plug-ins, and its stability all leave very little to desire, especially if you are into quick yet thorough editing jobs. In certain areas (stability) it is much better than some fully-priced 'monsters.' It is fast and manipulating multiple tracks is easy. After having installed it, it took me just about 15 minutes to look around and then to start working comfortably on a compositional project first laid out in 1984 – a technologically simple, yet musically dense electroacoustic work for which I needed multi-track software. Amadeus Pro is a much welcome addition to the suite of my other editing tools. As someone rightly observed, each programme has certain features the others may lack, or that particular feature may be easier to use then elsewhere. Even so, Amadeus Pro has already made my life as a composer and editor much more pleasant and richer. And let us not forget that it is version 1.0 of Amadeus Pro! Knowing the previous work of the developer, one can easily assume that Amadeus Pro can only get better. FIVE stars, period. [alert admin]

Pando 1.0.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Pando is absolutely delightful to use. Its GUI is simple, the programme is easy to configure and, nost importantly, does what it says it's designed for. The fact that it is a 'bannerware' does not put me off at all. The argument that you can accidentally click on a banner (and hence Pando is no good) is absurd - you can accidentally smash your own hand with a hammer, too. When you weight the convenience Pando offers against the inconvenience of having ads on bottom of its window, the judgement is simple. One more thing: Pando tech support is satisfactory, to say the least. When asked a question they are able to answer within hours. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. [alert admin]

iMsafe 2.0b11 (Mac OS X)
iMsafe is now nothing but a dead duck. It's been in beta for over a year now, most likely much longer. This is totally ridiculous. The product showed some promise, but how long do we, REGISTERED users, have to wait for the new, totally stable, non-beta version? At this point I consider the developer to be very irresponsible. No schedule, no updates, no info pertaing to when we could expect full version to be availble. To say that I feel cheated after having paid the registration fee would be to put it very mildly. Time to switch to ChronoSynch, or another reliable application offered and serviced by PROFESSIONAL developers. I strongly warn every one about iMsafe - do not waste your time and money on this one! Extensis Suitcase 11.0.4 (Mac OS X)
This product is not just bad, it is dangerous to say the least. It messes up your fonts to a very high degree. I have seen it in action in the hands of a consummate computer expert who, in the end, just dumped it. The idea of moving fonts from where they belong in the first place is one of the most idiotic I could ever imagine. It's like eating your supper in a toilet instead of dining room. Why is it not possible to design a simple programme which leaves the fonts where they are, but at the same time allows you to activate/deactivate them (or their collections/sets) at will? There are programmes (such as Finale) which look for fonts in their traditional locations, and will not work properly when the fonts are moved. Strongly recommended to be avoided at all cost. CharisMac Discribe 5.1.07 (Mac OS X)
I have followed the "development" of this programme for almost four years. How can one sell anything like that without being sued is beyond me. From the ugly, primitive interface to copying process it offers nothing by disappointment. Discs fail to be written, fail to be read by other drives... You name it. Toast is worth every single penny you spend on it. Yes, I agree - Toast is THE king of burning software. I've tried Discribe, DragonBurn... Perhaps some others. There is nothing like Toast. It has always been the best. [alert admin]

The newest Entourage sets standards by which the other email clients should be judged. It is easy to use, stable, full of features (why should I use separate applications to handle my projects, calendar events etc.?) and it offers--as do its sister programmes of the MS Office 2004--unmatched handling of non-Roman characters (such as Czech and Polish diacritical signs, Cyrillic alphabet and such). It is far superior to Apple's own Mail application whose shortcomings, especially in the area of handling multiple accounts, are simply disappointing, if not infuriating. My only complain concerns the Entourage Database file, which in the past easily became corrupted (meaning lost emails, addresses and all), but under MS Office 2004 that problem seems (largely) gone. With the MS Office 2004 (including the Entourage) Microsoft did it again, shooting itself gently in the foot by making the Mac version of its flagship software suite so much better and more elegant than its Windows namesake. Camino 0.8 (Mac OS X)
You may want to try Camino, one of those alternative Mac browsers. I think it's really, really good – very stable, fast, web-compliant to the utmost, elegant and easy to customise. It renders certain pages much better than Safari! I no longer have time to play with software, but this one was/is worth a try. And it is based on Mozilla's open code so it is not something that is going to disappear overnight. Anyone can use it easily - and like it, too. [alert admin]

AppleWorks X 6.2.9 (Mac OS X)
After running update 6.2.9 under Panther (10.3.2) AppleWorks would not open. Crashed all the time. I reinstalled the software (version 6.2.2) and rund the update again. Launch was perfect. No problems until trying to set preferences to show fonts in actual typefaces. Application crashed immediately after pressing OK button. So, AW 6.2.9 will run perfectly as long as font preferences are not altered (fonts are not shown in actual typefaces). Very annoying bug. [alert admin]

Acquisition 0.966 (Mac OS X)
Does the job. Clean interface. Does not play tricks on you. Worth the price, which i am actually still considering because of my second thoughts concerning P2P networks. But in certain cases such as public domain files it is all worth it. Ironically, it uses LimeWire engine - so much more efficiently than LimeWire itself. If you have good intentions - buy it. Less than 1000 downloads? The total number of downloads, all versions, approaches 150 THOUSAND! I think it is a number respectable enough to highlight the app? That the newest version had under 1000 downloads when you posted your question does not change a thing. It is a very popular app, period.

Your comments on someone else's negative critique are not well thought through, I am afraid. Indeed, one buys new operating system expecting it to work (because it is available COMMERCIALLY, not beta). If it does not work on the first day, it means the operating system is no good. Apple has demonstrated enough arrogance and ignorance over the years for us to just disregard them. What is even worse, Apple has…

CCC is a GREAT application. Its interface is intuitive - you do not have to be in astrophysics to figure out how it works. How it was possible to lose your data using this app is beyond me, really, it is. My experience tell me that an awful lot of times those who complain the loudest simply do not use their apps properly. RTFM, dude!

To say such a thing attests to ignorance and bad will. It is totally out of order. Instead of pouring out your frustration at not being able to understand how Pando works, you could have asked simple questions in a civilised way. As it stands, you just judged this excellent product by your questionable standards. Pando does what is says it does and many, many people have found to their delight…

Never used this programme, but am convinced that replacing Preferences is not such a hardship. Some bigger, more widely used programmes occasionally require dumping Prefs, or replacing them with saved old ones, Finale being the main evildoer here (it always replaces old prefs with the new version's; extremely annoying, I agree, but not undoable if you're prudent). Best, PIOTR
