iDrive 1.3.9 (Mac OS X)

Very disappointing...

Didn't work for me. iDrive failed to completely backup some folders and files that I had selected, yet it did backup some folders and files that I had NOT selected. In addition, it seemed to choke (by stalling completely) on some specific file types such that in eight hours overnight it made no progress at all beyond where it was when I went to bed (and no, I do not have my Energy Saver prefs set to put anything to sleep). Note: The downloadable User Guide seems to be only for the Windows version. . [alert admin]

Yummy FTP 1.8 (Mac OS X)

Even better & still the best!

As I mentioned in my previous reviews, I have tried every FTP/SFTP apps that I could find for the Mac. Yummy is the best--by far--in my opinion. (Interarchy doesn't come close, so far as I am concerned.) For plain FTP, some of the other apps are satisfactory, but Yummy does SFTP doesn't have the bugs that some of the others have. In addition, Yummy is highly configurable, and the excellent dual browse function is a real plus. -Don- [alert admin]

iCab X 4.5 (Mac OS X)

Addendum

I'm taking back what I said, below, about iCab being stable. I find that it will crash when clicking on secondary links at Amazon.com -- which, although rather strange, is rather consistent. [alert admin]

Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 (Mac OS X)

Gave up, getting a refund

Believe it or not, Adobe sells this problem with known bugs, bugs that have no workaround and which warrant a Tech Note. One would think that it would be just about as easy to fix the bugs as to write and publish a Tech Note on the Adobe website, but apparently not. In any case, here are the primary reasons that I destroyed the program and asked for a refund: 1) The interface, while dazzling compared to my old P.E. 2.0, consumes your whole screen (as mentioned previously by another reviewer) and the dark text doesn't stand out very well on the even darker background. 2) Like the earlier P.E., the User Guide is somewhat obtuse. It often tells you, for example, the steps to take to accomplish a specific task, such as create an animated GIF, but it doesn't tell you HOW to accomplish some of the steps along the way. 3) Regardless of whether you do or do not want to loop an animated GIF, it will loop. In other words, this is a known bug for which there is no workaround present. 4) Regardless of the frame delay setting you would like to use for an animated GIF, you are stuck with 0.2 seconds--much too fast for my eyes. This is a known bug for which there is no workaround at present. [alert admin]

TypeIt4Me X 4.1 (Mac OS X)

Not bad, but not the best either...

I tried every text expansion program I could find for Mac OS X. Eventually, and for awhile, I settled on TypeIt4Me. I found some aspects quite useful and some (including the mangled and/or delayed expansions) quite frustrating. After giving up on TypeIt4Me, I switched to Typinator and haven’t looked back. Typinator is the only one of the text expansion apps that I have used that allows one to back delete to erase a mistake and then type forward again from that point to the end of the expansion trigger and still have the expansion work. iCab X 4.2.5 (Mac OS X)

Excellent browser with many features

I have tried every browser that I could find for OS 10.4.11 and eventually settled on iCab as my default browser. Why? Because it is fast, stable, has an interface I like (without having to use a third party add-on such as Saft--I hate the brushed metal look of Safari) and offers many pref setting options not available in most of the other browsers. Plus, iCab's Forms Manager makes it likely to be less of a security risk than any of the other browsers. The one thing I have discovered about the settings that might be a help to others: for max compatibility with various sites, choosing "Safari 3, Mac OS X" seems to work without a hitch, whereas "Identity for best compatibility" does not. -Don- [alert admin]

USBCat 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Works perfectly...

...for me, either when a USB device is plugged in or removed, and when an already connected USB device is turned on or off. Truly "the cat's meow"--and you can't beat free! -Don- [alert admin]

TypeIt4Me X 4.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Good--but there is better.

I have tried every text expander for the Mac that I could find. For quite some time, I used TypeIt4Me. I eventually settled on Typinator. One of the best things about Typinator is that you can make a typo in the middle of an expansion shortcut, delete back through the error, correct the typo, continue on with the rest of the expansion shortcut--and it still expands (which is something that you could not do with the other text expanders that I tried). In addition, Typinator includes a very good auto [spell] correction feature. -Don- P.S. I have no connection with Typinator. I just like it better. If you haven't given either TypeIt4Me or Typinator a try, you probably should. Typinator: http://www.ergonis.com/products/typinator/ [alert admin]

The best!

If you like Interarchy, that's fine. To me, it seems a bit "primitive" in comparison to Yummy. For my specific needs, Yummy is by far the best. -Don-

Going to preferences, selecting the browser whose bookmarks you want to display--does not work for me--and I agree, this is a huge drawback!

If that is ALL that you think Yummy FTP is, then you obviously haven't checked out all its features as I have. Over the past four years, ever since my switch from PC to Mac, I have tried every FTP program available for the Mac and Yummy is, in my opinion, the very best of the bunch--and not by just a little bit. I use it on a daily basis in my work as a…

Shortcomings....

Hello Jerome, Yes, if I use Foxtrot prefs to disable Spotlight and then let Foxtrot index whatever folders I have chosen to index, Foxtrot does work. Unfortunately, however, the process mdimport then runs and every few seconds accesses some percentage of CPU resources and does a disk write-out as well; if I go away for a few hours and leave my computer running, I will find hundreds of thousands of disk writes-out have occurred in the…

Kills Disk Warrior

It turns out that the problem that I was experiencing with what I thought was an incompatibility between OS 10.4.4 & DW was instead an incompatibility between QuickTime 7.0.4 (which I had also installed along with OS 10.4.4) and DW. Apple is obviously aware of problems with QuickTime 7.0.4 and has made available a QT 7.0.4 uninstaller/QT 7.0.1 reinstaller on their website. THAT solves the problem that I was having. -Don-

Don't mess with this!

Anyone who thinks that Norton Antivirus is devoid of problems is not in touch with reality. And good luck if you decide to take it off your system; you will need to go to the Symantec site and hunt down a special file, download it, and then run it. Otherwise, NAV leaves its sticky fingers all over the place.

Perpetual problems

Hello John, Thank you very much for your prompt reply to my e-mail detailing my plight in not being able to try this latest version. You did send me a 30 day trial key, and that made it possible for me to try Captain--once again. And once again, unfortunately, there are problems which make the program unusable for me in SFTP mode (although it seems to work OK in FTP mode): 1) The program once locked up…
