Yummy FTP 1.7.1 (Mac OS X)
This is a rock solid SFTP client (the only one of the bunch that does SFTP really well the last time I compared them all). The new list-scrolling feature of the dual-browse feature, where the two panes (local and server) not only stay in the same directories--but stay focused in the same spots in the directory file listings--is the cat's meow, a real time-saver! -Don- [alert admin]

Yummy FTP 1.7 (Mac OS X)
I agree: The best advanced FTP/SFTP client ![]()

I'll repeat what I said before: * Stable. * One of the very few FTP apps that I have found that does SFTP without a glitch. * Relatively fast at synchronization. * Dual Browse" works really well (and sticks, unlike Transmit's similar feature). * Responsive developer. Note: I have tried every FTP/SFTP client for the Mac, and Yummy is by far my favorite. Of course I don't give a darn about spring-loaded folders. :=) -Don- [alert admin]

MailSteward 7.8.9 (Mac OS X)
I don't use Apple's Mail.app because it is just too restricting to suit me. Instead, I use GyazMail.app which suits me much better. The downside is that, to use MailSteward, I must export my mail files to UNIX mbox format and then import them into the MailSteward database. It's well worth the effort. MailSteward, through all of its many revisions, has worked flawlessly for me. Now, with ~15,000 e-mails in the MailSteward databse, the new indexing feature has made it even faster to report search results (and it was plenty fast before). Bottom line: MailSteward is a great program, in my opinion, and well worth the money. -Don- [alert admin]

Apple keyboard update 1.2 (Mac OS X)
It would be nice if this update told us something about what's new--and whether there is an uninstall routine. The previous update, 1.1, altered the ordinary action of the arrow keys in certain programs (MS Excel for Mac, for example), and inasmuch as there was no uninstall routine I had to reinstall a clone. Given my experience with the previous version, I'm not anxious to try this one out unless I know what's new or that there is an uninstall routine. -Don- [alert admin]

Typinator 2.0 (Mac OS X)
P.S. The developer provides free updates for two years from date of purchase, so this update was free for me. -Don- [alert admin]

Typinator 2.0 (Mac OS X)
When I switched from Windows/PC to OS X/Mac back in early 2004, I tried every Typinator-like app available for OS X, looking for something to replace AsUType (for Windows). I settled first on TypeIt4Me, but later switched to Typinator (v. 1.3) as the best of the bunch. I have been using it ever since--and it just keeps getting better: really neat in this 2.0 version are the autocorrection feature and the ability to create different sets of abbreviations for different purposes. Another of the outstanding features of Typinator (in my opinion) is the fact that, if you make a mistake in typing an abbreviation, you can backspace, retrace your steps from the point of error, and the abbreviation still expands (unlike TypeIt4Me and some others). I also like the feedback sound so that you know when an expansion has taken place, rather than having to check visually. [alert admin]

Psst 2.0.8 (Mac OS X)
If Psst doesn't work for you, try StartupSound.prefPane. I have used that for quite a long time and it does the job very nicely for me on my Powermac G5 and my iBook G4. -Don- [alert admin]

Spotless 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)
I moved from Panther to Tiger because Spotlight sounded sssooooo promising, and it seemed to work just great at the local Apple retail store. In practice, however, I found that it deosn't find all the files that it should, it continues to "find" files on drives that have been put in the privacy list, and it chokes on internal or external drives or volumes that are clones of the main boot drive. Even worse, once I unmount those external clones, Spotlight seems to continue to "hunt" for them, using up CPU resources (as much as ~90% every few seconds) and doing thousands of disk writes (which coincide with the use of CPU resources every few seconds)--even when nothing else at all is going on. Disabling Spotlight with Spotless completely eliminates the problems caused by Spotlight--and now, being able to remove the Spotlight icon from the menubar is icing on the cake! Thank you Spotless! -Don- P.S. The developer has been very responsive (in the past) to some questions and feature requests that I had. [alert admin]

SuperDuper! 2.1.4 (Mac OS X)
I agree with the post two below, SuperDuper! blows away the competition. I have tried almost every clone/backup app for the Mac, and this is the only one that has been able to clone and restore without producing errors that need to be corrected to get things running right again. Further, I have never seen even a hint of instability. -Don- [alert admin]

Going to preferences, selecting the browser whose bookmarks you want to display--does not work for me--and I agree, this is a huge drawback!

That's what I thought to, that the eject key no longer worked. Hold it down (instead of just tapping it) and it works.

If that is ALL that you think Yummy FTP is, then you obviously haven't checked out all its features as I have. Over the past four years, ever since my switch from PC to Mac, I have tried every FTP program available for the Mac and Yummy is, in my opinion, the very best of the bunch--and not by just a little bit. I use it on a daily basis in my work as a…

Hello Jerome, Yes, if I use Foxtrot prefs to disable Spotlight and then let Foxtrot index whatever folders I have chosen to index, Foxtrot does work. Unfortunately, however, the process mdimport then runs and every few seconds accesses some percentage of CPU resources and does a disk write-out as well; if I go away for a few hours and leave my computer running, I will find hundreds of thousands of disk writes-out have occurred in the…

It turns out that the problem that I was experiencing with what I thought was an incompatibility between OS 10.4.4 & DW was instead an incompatibility between QuickTime 7.0.4 (which I had also installed along with OS 10.4.4) and DW. Apple is obviously aware of problems with QuickTime 7.0.4 and has made available a QT 7.0.4 uninstaller/QT 7.0.1 reinstaller on their website. THAT solves the problem that I was having. -Don-

Anyone who thinks that Norton Antivirus is devoid of problems is not in touch with reality. And good luck if you decide to take it off your system; you will need to go to the Symantec site and hunt down a special file, download it, and then run it. Otherwise, NAV leaves its sticky fingers all over the place.

Hello John, Thank you very much for your prompt reply to my e-mail detailing my plight in not being able to try this latest version. You did send me a 30 day trial key, and that made it possible for me to try Captain--once again. And once again, unfortunately, there are problems which make the program unusable for me in SFTP mode (although it seems to work OK in FTP mode): 1) The program once locked up…

Interarchy is a good program. It would be a really great program were it not for the fact that it relies on the Finder for the display of local files rather than using a dual window display (FTP site window and local window, side by side) such as do, for example, my two favorite FTP programs: Transmit and Vicomsoft FTP.
