ViewIt 2.28 (Mac OS X)
I've only tried ViewIt for 2 hours, but already found 3 things I do not like:
1. ViewIt's (VI's) Help page says "For better efficiency place ViewIt in your dock." Well that's still not efficient because dragging a folder of images onto the icon does NOT open VI! Even when VI is already open, you can't drag a folder onto the icon, you must drag it into VI's window. So by adding VI to your Dock, all you're doing is making it a bit faster to open the app.
I set VI to open in fullscreen mode, so I could view my images in fullscreen (makes sense, no?). I thought I could drag a folder onto the icon in the Dock and poof--fullscreen images would appear.
But nooooo, I have to first open VI. So when I opened VI, it opened in fullscreen mode, meaning I could no longer see the Finder where the images folder was, nor could I access the dock. I had to hit Escape, to minimize ViewIt's window, THEN drag the folder into VI's window, THEN click the fullscreen button to finally see them in fullscreen. That is NOT convenient, that is d@mn INconvenient!!!
2. There is NO delete button to delete unwanted images from a folder. You can use a key COMBO to delete a file, but this means I have to take my hand off the mouse, press ⌘+Delete and then move my hand back to the mouse. Alternatively you can right-click and scroll through the contextual menu.
I'm supposed to do this for EVERY item I want to delete?! NO WAY-I want ONE button!
After de-selecting a default preference, you CAN drag images to the trash IF you aren't in fullscreen mode but that's sloooow if you have Dock-hiding enabled as I do.
If I'm sorting a folder of 200 images, I should be able to click one button to quickly move that item to Trash while I advance to the next image. There would also HAVE to be an Undo command for this, to undelete the last deleted item.
The lack of a delete key blows this software for me. The developer may have intentionally left it out as a safety feature, but I see a delete button as a vital feature.
3. VI quits a LOT. I was trying to experiment with several functions in the Tools menu, but VI kept quitting and I never knew why. For example, in the regular window, whether looking at a single image or thumbnails, every time I clicked Tools→JPEG Apply Lossless Rotations, VI Quit. If I selected Tools→Rename Sequentially, then clicked Cancel, VI quit.

ViewIt 2.28 (Mac OS X)
This is not shareware, it is crippleware, meaning you can not fully use the software until you pay for it. ViewIt's README says "program will remain limited unless you purchase unlocking code." How am I suppose to fully evaluate this program, when some of its features are off limits?? I think it would be more practical to offer a fully-functioning 30-day trial period. I just downloaded and installed this, but now I'm not sure I even want to test it. [alert admin]

Renamer4Mac 3.0 (Mac OS X)
This version is less user-friendly and expen$ive ![]()

Although I consider this to be the most time-saving app I have, I agree it's not worth 26 bucks. I'd say it's worth $10, maybe $15. Even though it has saved me a lot of time and aggravation, there are other apps available.
Has our rampant inflation now spread from food & fuel to software, or is the developer getting greedy? Is this a result of the Dollar-Euro parity? (the developer is in Austria).
I also HATE the new layout.
It was much more convenient having all the controls in one compact area in the corner. Now you have to scroll from the bottom of the window to the top and back. At its default size on my iBook we're talking 6.5 inches from the add/remove buttons to the tabs. Even further if you use it fullscreen as I do. That's a LOT of unnecessary distance to travel! I could easily rack up an additional 10 feet in mousing with just 6 folders, due to the new layout.
I have to say that the new design does look a bit nicer overall, but it's less functional, and that's what I was paying for, not glitter & paint.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I never did figure out how to save the presets on the previous version, and still can't in the new version. There is no mention of presets in the minimal Help guide included.
It looks so simple, yet I've tried repeatedly to save the settings, but it never sticks. Every time I choose a saved preset, it reverts to the default setting in the Remove tab of 1 & 1.
I encountered a problem a few days ago, which is actually a Mac issue, not something R4M did wrong: I mistakenly added a decimal to the front of several file names, causing them to become "invisible". Because they were invisible, Finder wouldn't allow me to rename them again, either directly in the Finder or in Renamer4Mac. Thankfully, I use Pathfinder and was able to change the names back. If I weren't using Pathfinder, I don't know how I would have renamed them.
I think Renamer4Mac should display a confirmation box when a user tries to perform an action that could negatively affect the files being re-named, such as removing their extension or making them invisible.

FStream 1.3.5 (Mac OS X)
Good player, but has some bugs ![]()

I've used FStream for a while now, and it's useful for listening to various stations. I'll have to give it 1 star though, since it does work partially, but most functions don't work at all. I have tried re-installing FStream, but nothing changed. It does connect to streams surprisingly fast. 1. The controller window ALWAYS says disconnected, even while I'm listening to the radio. If I click the left arrow, the controller says Connecting, then changes back to Disconnected. 2. Since the controller doesn't work properly, neither does the Reload function with modifier "r" key. 3. Steams will not play from anywhere but the Preset window. If I open the Quick Open box and paste an URL from my Radio tab, nothing happens. If I click the top button on the right side of the controller window, the menu opens, displaying some options and all the stations in my Radio tab. If I select one of those stations in that menu, nothing happens. If I select the same station in the Preset tab, it plays fine. 4. The equalizer does nothing to the sound output. The buttons move when I switch settings, but the sound doesn't change. 5. The record feature doesn't work properly. When I click the record button, a file is created in the chosen folder, but the file size stays at zero, and FStream's display never moves from zero. 6. What is the Radio tab good for? All it is is a list of stations I like. This would seem to be a Favorites list, which would make perfect sense, except that you can't choose one and make it play. To do that, you must go back to the Preset tab where you must find it again and then start it. To have a tab just to store station names seems ridiculous. 7. It would be nice if, after opening FStream, it would quickly scan all the stations, then ONLY display those stations currently active and with a good connection. While most streams play fine, I've clicked on many, just to have them not play at all, or only play intermittently. I have the buffer size set on Large, and the Reload factor at 50%, though different Reload settings produced no noticeable results. [alert admin]

Converso 2.1.0 (Mac OS X)
Just installed & tried using this, and ran into problems immediately. First off, BROWSE buttons are badly needed to locate the files to convert! I don't type paths, I browse to them. I had to go to the folder I wanted, right click, select copy path, go back to Converso, paste the path into the box. When I ticked the box to Save In Custom Path, when the save location box opens, the cursor is 1 space over from the beginning instead of being all the way to the left of the box. This happens every time, so it's not that I accidentally hit the space key. I have to move the cursor to the beginning before I can paste the file's path. And finally, it DIDN'T WORK! The very first dmg I tried to convert, I got an error message saying "Some Errors Were Encountered, please Check Console For Details." So I go to Open>Show Console, and voilå! the Console is EMPTY! I also tried saving the image to the default location, but got the same error message. [alert admin]

XMas Lights 1.5.6 (Mac OS X)
I just tested Xmas Lights on my iBook G4 1.33 w/OSX 10.4.10, and it seemed to work fine, using less than 5Mb of memory. For me it wasn't worth installing. Developer says this "hangs" from the Menu Bar. Hovers is more appropriate, as I saw nothing but a single row of lights 'floating' beneath the Menu Bar. No wires or anything connecting them. For those wanting to add some desktop sparkle without taxing your memory, this may be what you want. If you want a lot more 'bling' and can spare the RAM, try these apps: For customizable lights all around your screen, try MacLampsX @ http://arcticmac.home.comcast.net/~arcticmac/software/maclampsx.html (freeware) If you'd like a customizable tree on your desktop, as well as customizable lights around your screen, try Treetop Lights @ http://www.freerangemac.com/ (donationware) [alert admin]

gDisk 0.6.1 (Mac OS X)
Ditto the comments below: "No labels found "; moreover, gDisk was unable to make new labels and any attempts to create them caused the application to crash." "Completely useless at the moment." Not much more to say, this version simply will not work properly. Seems the developer failed to test it. [alert admin]

I've tried SET several times, and so far I've been unable to get it to work. I emailed the developer 5 days ago and have received no reply. When I open SET, I get the following error message: Can't make name of every class cdis application "Pathfinder" whose class isrv = true into type reference.
It appears that SET does not currently work with Pathfinder. [alert admin]
