BRU Server 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Interface - Ugh!

Guys, this thing works very well, indeed. But you've got to get the interface into the 23rd century. The three-part application situation is a little eggheaded, too. How about I run one application to do everything? Looking forward to deleting Retrospect. [alert admin]

FlightCheck Professional 5.52 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

A Disgraceful Product Deserving Termination

This once great, once AMAZING product has seemingly fallen into the hands of anti-human eggheaded developers & technoid UNIX dweebs, because it's now a cumbersome, convoluted, slow-working, error-prone and arcane piece of useless (and *expensive*) code. Font-scanning is preposterous, the interface is a major step backward from Classic days, and did I mention how slow this turkey is? Pathetic. Thankfully, InDesign does what FlightCheck used to do, and does it well. Sad to see such a formerly perfect product become as useful as dollar bills on the moon. [alert admin]

You Control: Tunes 1.2.5 (Mac OS X)

But Synergy Rules the Roost...

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17100E

Synergy is extremely elegant and dynamic, plus no intrusive, eggheaded internet verification. Synergy only has version checking, which can easiy be deactivated.

Companies like "You" just don't GET IT. Why? because they have no way to quantify the number of customers lost due to their intrusive verification schemes.

Many people (myself included) will not install software if they know, in advance, that it "phones home". It's one thing to tolerate Quark XPress doing this because maybe you can't replace Quark (except with InDesign, hah!), but when superior alternatives exist that DO NOT "phone home," why bother?

I mean, who's being paranoid here? So "You" saves a X dollars because their software is more difficult to pirate, yet loses XXX dollars because a majority of users don't want their software "phoning home".

Makes no sense. Too bad, too. "You" actually makes decent stuff, though in this case, Synergy is clearly superior. [alert admin]

eMail Extractor 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

other uses

There are MANY possible uses for this tool, aside spam. Many. I just converted an old e-mail database from an obsolete mailer into text, used this application to get all my old addresses out. Not only did it get EVERY ONE, but removed the duplicates en route. Five stars. [alert admin]

Mr. Cobalt - Another Egghead Goes Down in Flames

FROM THE SYNERGY FAQ: How do I disable or modify Synergy's automatic version checking feature? By default, Synergy automatically checks once per day to see if a new version has been released. Your privacy is protected because no information is transmitted to the server in order to perform this check; Synergy merely asks the server what the latest version number is, and if the number is higher than the currently running version, a dialog is displayed. There is not yet a control in the user interface for this feature, but you can still control it by editing the Synergy preferences file. Make sure Synergy is not running when you edit the file. The file is at "-/Library/Preferences/org.wincent.Synergy.plist". To modify the settings look for the following entry in the file: And etc. NEXT! [alert admin]

QuickName 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

No Hole - Try "Simple Find & Replace v1.1"

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13235 I've been using the "Simple Find & Replace v1.1" application in Panther (for some time), and it's been invaluable. However, I do want to try this "QuickName" and see if it's actually better. The feature-set looks a little more interesting. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2004 11.1.0 (Mac OS X)

Fixing PDF Issues

Who needs Acrobat's PDF baloney in the Microsoft Suite, anyway? Just "Save to PDF" and use the "Big Guns" for other situations. In the meantime, here's how to solve this issue: Do a Find for "PDFMaker". You'll discover three such items in three different Microsoft "Startup Folders": Word, Excel, PowerPoint. These files are called PDFMaker.dot, PDFMaker.xla and PDFMaker.ppa. Open each folder individually and drag the respective PDFMaker file out. Then make a folder within the chosen "Startup Folder" and give it exactly the same name as the file you drug out. Example: In the Word "Startup Folder," drag out "PDFMaker.dot" and make a folder therein with the same name. Next time you open Acrobat, you might get a message about its wanting to "fix" things. Say "No," and then "Don't Ever Ask Me Again, Dammit." And there it is. [alert admin]

Free Driver: https://sourceforge.net/projects/wirelessdriver/

Hey, Richard: Sounds like the problem is between the keyboard and the chair. No offence, but we have this on several PowerBooks with the O-card, specifically, and 10.3.5 (was 10.3.4)...no problems whatsoever. Maybe you need a little "maintenance"? I suggest "MacJanitor" and "OnyX" for that.

Sorry, Nick, but the driver works flawlessly in many different flavours of OS X, including 10.3.4 and 10.3.5. If it works, it works. Absolutely no issues. no problems. It's just that simple.
