SteerMouse 3.9 (Mac OS X)

Works well with Logitech G9

I first tried USB Overdrive but this software would not recognise my Logitech G9. As a result the G9 was restricted to its MacOSX default 2-button operation. This G9 is a multi-button high speed gamer mouse intended for Windows only. SteerMouse's default settings were spot on. So this G9 will be a good replacement for my MX Revolution and MX-1000 mice which both were suspected of causing hard hangs of the Mac Pro. Maybe it was the Logitech Control Center which caused my problems. Time will tell if the substitution has been worthwhile. What can I say? SteerMouse has no problems that I can detect. A good utility indeed. [alert admin]

USB Overdrive 10.4.8 (Mac OS X)

Quite useless with a Logitech G9 mouse

While this version detected and was useful for my Razer Copperhead gamer mouse, it failed to recognise my Logitech G9, also a gamer's mouse. The G9 could not be configured in any way and only left me with MacOSX's default 2-button operation. It was galling when the G9 was first plugged in to have it thought of by Leopard as a keyboard with the mandatory keyboard indentification process following. For the same shareware price, the alternative SteerMouse was a better option for both mice. I much prefer the G9 to the Razer so I was forced to uninstall USB Overdrive in favour of SteerMouse. SteerMouse's default settings are fine for the G9. So while USB Overdrive has been great in the past it needs updating to work with newer products. [alert admin]

smcFanControl 2.1.2 (Mac OS X)

I use it on my Mac Pro and on my MacBook Pro

Fan Control is perfect for my needs. However, its value is negated when I switch to Bootcamp/Windows. Or is it? Maybe fan settings remain as set when I boot Windows. How can I tell? I need a Windows XP version. Not having any fan control in Windows for 3D graphics, like in games and MMORPGs is concerning. [alert admin]

Unison 1.7.6 (Mac OS X)

A Delightful Newsreader

Unison has a simple Mac-like interface and is very easy to use. Unison meets my simple needs better than anything else I have tried and I keep finding new features that further endear it to me. [alert admin]

Corel Painter 9.1 (Mac OS X)

9.1 Updater Quits Unexpectedly — buggy installer

I'm unable to update to 9.1. The updater quits after it pops up the finder navigation screen for the user to point to the install target. This was the problem with an older archived 9.1 updater AND a freshly downloaded one direct from Corel. The OS is 10.4.3. Corel needs to make this updater more stable and compatible with the latest Tiger version. Painter is great but the updater doesn't work with Tiger. [alert admin]

VueScan 8.1.35 (Mac OS X)

Problem with Screen Updating

One of the things said to have been fixed in this version is screen update speed. If anything, this aspect has been made much worse to the extent that i find this version absolutely unusable. If the scan window is left alone, scan operation is good. But if I need to resize the window and or move it on the screen, the subsequent redraw is very erratic and jerky and the use of the cursor is lost for many seconds until the final desired size or position is reached in a series of ungainly jumps. And this is on a quick PMG5/dual2.5 with 6800 Ultra graphics. Is there some kind of conflict between 8.1.35 and my hardware? This version is terrible so I have gone back to Epson Scan. [alert admin]

Works well with Logitech G9

Sorry I seem to have double-posted. I need to add to my comments. I decided I wanted to return to using the MX Revolution. I had begun to dislike the G9. I found a problem with Steermouse in that it lacks an uninstaller. After installing my new Logitech MX Revolution and software, the System Prefs pane could not find the MX and my MacOSX Dock stopped being accessible. In addition, Finder menu behavior was unstable. Trashing Steermouse's…
