Transmit 3.6.7 (Mac OS X)

Unable to connect to sharepoint

As the Finder and Safari in OS X 10.5.7 still have a bug in uploading to sharepoint I tried Cyberduck and then Transmit. But with both of them I can't even logon: "Could not connect to server "xy.kftg.ch" User authentication failed". Although I can do a login with Finder and Safari with no problems. So be aware: Using Transmit as a better replacement for Finder might not work! [alert admin]

Intaglio 2.7.2 (Mac OS X)

The best drawing program for fast accurate 2D-drawings

If you loved MacDraw this is the program for you. It is a fully up to date version using a lot of CoreImage techniques but with the feel of the old MacDraw. I tried but don't like the look and feel of EazyDraw which is another good 2-D drawing application capable of reading old MacDraw files. It just does not work the way I think which is not the case with Intaglio. If you are looking for an easy to learn, fast 2D drawing application this is the one you need. It is not as sophisticated as OmniGraffle which I used before and still use though but it has some features which I missed in OmniGraffle so much that I moved to Intaglio: Arcs and exact exports. I use it for conceptual technical diagrams and to draw precise .png pictures to be used in a new GUI I am developing used for mobile devices. (Save Selection as ...) You have to get used to drawing Bezier curves and to the fact that a copy of the object is done if you press the mouse button too long though. But then you are very fast. [alert admin]

iShell 4.0r5 (Mac OS X)

Pros & Cons of iShell

I have been using iShell very intensly for the last four weeks. I built a huge project with 360 images many buttons and a kind of state machine controlled by a tabbed data file with 300+ data rows and 15 columns. I started off working myself through all the tutorials. Pros: You have a vast library of events, commands and elements. You can nearly do everything what you can imagine. It is quite fast. The learning curve for such a complex environment is OK. I needed about 3-4 days working through all the tutorials and tests of my own to be able to start my own project. The programming environment is stable and quite professional. It is really amazing what you can do! Cons: The half an hour tutorial to be up and running is a kind of a joke. The project is allready fully built. The tutorials are not very professional. They have many typos und the things you build look ugly. But it is still the fastest way to learn it. The support is fast but with zero technical help. I did not get a usable answer to any of my questions. The free documentation is absolut minimal and contains no examples. The runtime module seems to be very buggy at least on OS X. You can only use the letterbox type of window. Fullscreen mode does not work properly (the picture has an offset of about 150 pixels off the screen) nor does Custom mode (all the mouse up events do not work anymore). The wrapper does not work either. I had to switch it off to get rid of having an error message after every click of the mouse. Because of the sparse documentation you have to figure out a lot by yourself. You need a lot of time for very simple things. For instance resizing a window. I still don't now how you do it. You can buy a book/CD but you cannot download it :-(. A big handicap if you have to do a project within a very short time and live abroad. Because of all this cons iShell is clearly too expensive. For a bigger project you additionally need to buy support which makes it even more expensive. iShell: You will love it and hate it at the same time! [alert admin]

Batch Process Images 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Fails for PNG Files

I wanted to convert a folder of PNG pictures. Everthing looked OK until I saw the result. The pictures seem to have a very narrow grid of yellow laid over them. You can hardly see the original pictures. Did not try the other modes as I only need to do PNG. [alert admin]
