SizeUp 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Full Window Control

A tiny little app that happily sits on on my my menu bar but gets a lot of use with programs like CSSEdit, as I can position the code and preview perfectly on my screen in 2 clicks. Making Safari full screen is very useful but the best feature is that it once saved me when I copied my pref files from my iMac to my MBP and iTunes 'fell off' the smaller screen. As there was no edge to the window, I had nothing to grab with my mouse. Rather than trash any prefs, all I did was select 'full screen' from SizeUp and everything fitted perfectly into place. The asking price is what you think it's worth - so hopefully my payment contribution paid for a meal or two for the developer (well - a supersize fast food meal anyway). It is a one trick pony though, so I'd imagine that a lot of skint-flints out there will moan that this should be 100% free. It's so great when developers can genuinely improve on Apple's superb OS without hindering the speed of the system! [alert admin]

Img2icns 1.1 (Mac OS X)

A perfect app

Saw this on an RSS feed, downloaded, installed and had new icons in the space of 2 minutes. Easiest app I think I've ever used. I was using Candy Bar, but didn't really need 90% of it's functionality. This app also creates decent size ICNS images. Transparency is correct (from Fireworks PNG files). I'm happily going to pay the money to unlock the favicon features (I know there are free online apps for this, but I'm a sucker for helping out developers of inexpensive, quality software). Can't comment on stability yet - too early to know - but I'm very impressed so far. [alert admin]

FontExplorer X Pro 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Font Goodness

I've been using the free FontExplorer since it was released (on both PC and Mac) and have been hugely impressed. This paid for version seems to be even faster, and is handling my 3000+ font collection without any issues (previews are virtually instant). The option to backup is going to be a lifesaver at some point, so I'm glad it's there. CS4 plug-ins are all working seemlessly as well. It doesn't seem to have many changes from the free version but the interface feels like a 100% Mac app now. Not sure it's worth the full price, but it's 50% cheaper for early adopters - and having had years of use with the freebie, I thought I'd give the programmers some cash for work well done! Having tinkered with Fusion2, this won out for speed (although Fusion2 had some interesting features). [alert admin]

MenuCalendarClock for iCal 3.1 (Mac OS X)

Hurrah for Feedback

It's great that the programmer behind this great app listens to his feedback, as the option to hide the dock icon is a nice little touch, and means I don't have to go fiddling around in Plist files to hide it away. This app is great - it is looking good on my menu bar, is very functional, and I highly recommend it once more. Now, if only there was an upgrade price from v2 to v3 (I happily paid for v2 - gotta keep programmers fed I feel)... [alert admin]

MenuCalendarClock for iCal 3.1 (Mac OS X)

Bloated New Version - When app get fat.

I've used this app for over a year, and now I've moved to Leopard, I've installed v3.1. It works beautifully, but as with other users, I think this version has jumped the shark. I really don't need more icons in more dock, or application switcher - I have iCal for that. I use this to see the date/month ahead quickly and easily - I don't need a full icon app for that. If there could be either a free cut down version of the app, without the new bloat, that would be perfect, or - failing that - an option to hide this app from the doc/app switcher. I've used the info.plist hack to hide it from the dock for now - but this is probably a bit hard to do for the average user (actually it's not hard at all, but a bit scary if you don't like messing with things). Also, why is there no upgrade path? I'm happy to pay for software I use a lot, as it's the only way the programmer will keep it alive, but it wasn't all that long ago I paid for v2 - now I'm on Leopard and using v3, I can't see why I need to pay the full amount again. I'll be using it unregistered for the time being (it's still great without the bloaty v3 paid for features). This is a 5 star app, but this version is a 2 star mess. [alert admin]

BluePhoneElite 2.0.5 (Mac OS X)

Great App - No looker

This app is loosing it's looks with age. Version1 was pretty, with a nice simple UI, and easy to use prefs. This new version has hideous icons, far too many windows and the most confusing prefs I've ever used (I persevered with them, as I needed to use a new phone that v1 didn't support).

I've culled most of prefs, as I couldn't work out what they did - now it does everything I need though, so it's all OK. It was just a nightmare to set up.

For SMS this is great - I hate texting at the best of times, so this app makes things as easy as email. The notifications are great as well - a bit like Growl, but with the options to 'reply', 'trash', etc.

I've looked at things like FoneLink, but they are far too bulky compared to this (FoneLink does most of what BluePhoneElite does, but also does a lot more if you need it all). For speed and easy menu bar access I'm still loving BPE though. (FoneLink has the looks though)

In conclusion - a great app, spoiled a bit in it's new guise.

yFlicks 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

iTunes for Movies

This app is fantastic - I'm using it to view computer tutorials, and being able to have this app remember where you left off, and automatically move to the next movie in a folder is a godsend. The integration of the Apple remote is great, and having my movie folder organised as easily as iTunes is great as well. This app looks and feels like a solid Apple app - and even the preferences have been logically thought out. For £10 it was a bargain (shame I missed it on MacZot for even less last week!). I've not written a review on VersionTracker before, but this app is so useful, I thought I'd share my love for it. One word of warning - I can't seem to get YouTube videos to play after they are downloaded via yFlicks. Far from a deal breaker, and it may be something I'm doing wrong. For all my other movies (.MOV, .AVI) it plays perfectly. [alert admin]

CopyPaste-X 1.6 beta 5 (Mac OS X)

Top Utilities

This app is fantastic - the features that you get when you register it are saving me hours. This, Drag Thing and Snapz Pro X are the best utilities yet for OSX. Every update of CopyPaste brings a ton of ace new stuff. [alert admin]

AAChoo 1.1 (Mac OS X)

What i really need

As AAC is better quality than MP3, what would be useful is a way to convert all of iTunes ACC files to MP3. Converting MP3 to AAC is pointless - it would not improve matters, and putting a compressed format into another compressed format is not very useful. Converting the superior AAC to MP3 would be slightly better, because the AAC is better to begin with. I don't want to have to rip all my CD's twice to have both formats. [alert admin]
