Macaroni 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Snow Leopard compatibility

It's not made clear here in any way, which is a shame, but according to the developer's website: Snow Leopard Compatibility Today's release of Mac OS X 10.6, a.k.a. Snow Leopard, has brought many questions from people who want to know-- Does your software work on this new version of Mac OS X? The answer is, very simply, "yes". The current versions of all of my software work just fine on Snow Leopard. No updates are needed, so you can keep using the version you have. [alert admin]

Checksum 1.5 (Mac OS X)

Problems with SL?

When I first downloaded and used this utility it was great, but for some reason when I try and use it now I can't get it to open files. If I try and drop an application file onto the window it just won't accept it, and if I try and use the file dialog approach the Open button stays greyed out when I have a package selected - the only time it isn't greyed out is when you have navigated into a package and have a final element selected (such as info.plist). I think there is an issue with the way that the file opening is set up in the application so that it doesn't see packages as valid files to be selected. Shame, as this was great - elegantly straightforward and simple - when I did get it to work. [alert admin]

DivX For Mac 7.1 (Mac OS X)

Why no version number?

Why is it not possible to see which version is installed within the System Prefs pane? This is an imbecilic omission - how is one expected to know which version is installed and whether or not it is necessary to update a system without this? And it must be the most trivial of things to do - obviously the software knows which version it is, so writing some code to display this within the pref pane is a tiny amount of work. Come on, guys, have some simple common sense! [alert admin]

Logitech Control Center 3.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Stupidity

How come it's not possible to see from the UI which version is currently installed? Such a trivial and obvious thing but without it there is no easy way to work out whether you need to update or not. [alert admin]

SuperDuper 2.6 (Mac OS X)

Snow Leopard compatibility

Description above doesn't say so, but the new version 2.6 of this excellent product is indeed compatible with Snow Leopard (according to the developer's site). It would be somewhat odd if it wasn't, given that it has been released on the day of Snow Leopard's release! [alert admin]

Flip4Mac WMV 2.3.0.7-BETA (Mac OS X)

Sorry about the double post...

... but there seems to be some sort of lag at present after entering a comment before it appears on VT. For those of you wondering about my comment, the original post that I was referring to has been removed, presumably because the poster realised that he was making a fool of himself by bemoaning that you had to pay for Flip4Mac and issuing a "warning" to the developers over the matter. Flip4Mac WMV 2.3.0.7-BETA (Mac OS X)

Player IS totally FREE and always has been

I don't know who getittowork thinks he/she is, issuing warnings in this way. You have no right to be so pompous, particularly when you are WRONG. The player is totally free and has always been so. It's only the Pro and Studio versions which you pay for which add the capability to import/export WMV files. Come on, please at least do some basic research before posting in such a juvenile way. SecureNotes 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Dead as a dead dog

The website says "NOTICE: NOT YET OX 10.5 "LEOPARD" COMPLIANT". After all this time for this app not yet to be 10.5 compatible is a clear indication that you shouldn't trust any data to it! Shame because the functionality looks pretty good. [alert admin]

Bento 2.0v4 (Mac OS X)

Further limitations

Two more things that hold Bento back from being really useful - one very basic and the other a bit less so: 1. Apparently no ability to style text at all. Why can't I make some fields Bold or Italic? This is SO basic it's not true! And it's not as if keeping it simple is a defence for this - it's such a basic feature that no-one could be confused by it, and it's the type of thing that you don't have to use if you don't want to. 2. No calculations - at all! For example I have the requirement to calculate the yearly rent payable from the monthly rent for a property, but Bento can't even do this. I also can't set a field to be a total of a range of records (although to be fair there is the summary function, but it is very inflexible). Filemaker need to get the balance right between being easy-to-use (which by and large they have successfuly done) and being underpowered to be useful. At present it is the latter which characteristic which sadly predominates. [alert admin]

It is faster than v.7 & that is it.

From their blog (easily found from their homepage): August 27, 2009 Sixteen months ago, we began the enormous undertaking of rewriting the core engine of SOHO Notes and SOHO Organizer from scratch in order to improve the speed of these products. This required throwing away years of work to create a new engine based on Apple’s extremely-fast Core Data.

2.3.014 much slower than previous version

Is this anecdotal or have you actually tested the difference? If so, can you provide some figures for the slowdown?

Does Snow Leopard exist?

Maybe, but on the page from which you download the installer is a pop-up menu which lists MacOS X versions 10.4.11 to 10.5.7 ONLY. I can quite believe that the information on the other page is correct however - this would be entirely typical of Adobe which is a company that just doesn't bother to get the details right. They really are the most pathetic outfit (actually the term outfit is a bit generous).

Not 64-bit still.

Should have added that as a result I won't be downloading and installing this update as it means there will be another one along sometime that is 64 bit.

Not 64-bit still.

Don't know why two people found this comment unhelpful - it's a nuisance to have to relaunch System Prefs just to have to use this prefs pane and there's no good reason it shouldn't have been recompiled to be 64 bit clean.

Stupidity

I follow you up to the point where you suggest that I should go to Device Manager. There is no such option in my prefs pane. However Eureka! - I have just spotted what you're referring to! You're talking about the menu bar and there is indeed a MENU called Device Manager which has an About option in it. Well here are my comments on this - firstly, why can't the version information be simply…

Found this what's new info at macupdate

I think that list just covers what's new in the data, not what's new in the application. A similar list was in the recent email newsletter called The Sightseer.

No problems in the UK

I have replaced my CD many times and although the process could be a bit more straightforward (it would be better if one could apply for the upgrade directly via a form on the website rather than having to email tech support), I have never had any problem with getting the new CD/DVD - it just appears in the post.

TOO limited

Similarly this is a big problem for me - being able to use a database on multiple systems is imperative - I use a MacBook as well as my desktop system and swap backwards and forwards between them. All my files are saved onto a NAS box (ReadyNAS Duo - excellent) and so are available from both systems, but Bento cannot work in this way. I love what Bento does as far as it goes, but…
