Berkeley Packet Monitor 1.5 (Mac OS X)
This application does in fact work, however you must press the dark grey "Halt" button once to effectively UN-halt the default state which is halted. Basically, the program will launch already paused, you must unpause it for it to begin catching packets. You have one "Halt" button to pause/unpause the action of capturing packets, and another "Halt" button to control the "releasing" of captured packets (purge old data from the list at left). The filters are pretty simple and self-explanatory, however: entering data into a filter, then pressing return, will cause both capturing and releasing of packets to be HALTED, and then filter the packet list at left based on what you entered. It's a fairly simple program. Could be better, but it's really not bad at all. My biggest complaint is that there is no HEX view for the captured data (ASCII output does not bode well when binary data is captured). Final note: If you need a packet capture program that will allow you to look at raw binary streams, then the current version of this application (1.5) is __NOT__ for you. [alert admin]

IMPORTANT: If iTunes appears hung, chances are that it's actually in the middle of doing something. Forcing it to quit is not a good idea. If it's going to crash, it will crash.. otherwise, leave it alone and let it finish *whatever* it's doing. Ever since version 6.0.1 (possibly 6.0.0, not sure) iTunes has started *hanging* whenever I drop new MP3s onto my library (I'm moving music from home to the office). It will sit there…
