VueScan 8.3.12 (Mac OS X)

And the features keep on coming....

Last version I was using was 8.3.07, so maybe this was included before .13, but a BIG thanks for allowing the histogram graph and adjustments points to be visible on the left while looking at the preview or scanned image - this allows the image to be adjusted without switching back and forth between the histogram and image. This is a great improvement in useability - if you haven't updated in a while, get this one. [alert admin]

Game Agent 1.5 (Mac OS X)

seems to work but window doesn't scroll

Gathers the data and shows the ratings, but the window won't scroll lower. A bit annoyng considering 20% of the screen is wasted on a ad display at the top. I'm running 1024x768, so I guess the developer had a much nicer screen than I do. [alert admin]

Woot.com Widget 1.03 (Mac OS X)

handy for woot fans, but...

It uses way too much screen real estate, as it will sit there indicating sold out most of the time. It would be much handier as an expandable one liner, with a red and green indicator for sold out/in- stock [alert admin]

X-Plane 8.1.1b1 (Mac OS X)

another try at X-plane

I've purchased v8 after loosing interest at V6. V8 so far seems worth the upgrade from 6, but if I was coming from 7 might not seem so. From a value perspective the terrain DB is now included on a single dvd as to the extra cost cd's in earlier versions. Seems to perform reasonably well, and changes over the previous V6 are noticeable: more detailed instruments, more realistic terrain, and the flight model seems improved, but I have limited time in real aircraft. And the joystick equipment config is greatly improved, and weather download built in is much appreciated. My local area is very recognizable, both terrain shape and weather - texture is lacking like beaches on the coast etc. However some things still lag - documentation is still a bit minimal and dated in some areas, and updates still have to be applied by replacing files - an update utility would be helpful. If I've missed it, sorry. Overall I'm pleased and having some fun with this again. Realism is improved, and the program is much more polished. Commentary: given the few choices for Mac Flight sims, hard to pass this one up. Am certainly against the authors over-hyping their product in reviews. Tried the flightgear opensource mentioned earlier - its OK, but still in development, and so lacking many conveniences - feels like x-plane 4 - the config for controls etc is much easier in X-plane, for example. Certainly applaud their efforts though. [alert admin]

VueScan 8.1.35 (Mac OS X)

.35 quicker but some strange behavior

I stopped using the 8.1.2x series as there were some issues with zooming vs buffer. The .18 was working fine for me. This version is much better in many respects - the redraw after zoom or adjustments is very fast. However 2 things I noticed - 1 - the mouse seems to "lock" after holding the button on a control or the title bar to move the window, and then that control will follow the mouse even after the button is released. So you think your done and move the mouse, and the adjustment goes along with. Just click a second time to release. Or is this a new feature? 2 - I was scanning a small item 1.5 by 2 inchs. The scan was along the 2 inch axis and took forever at 300 dpi - I finally aborted afer several minutes. If I incresed the scan are to about 5 inches the scan was very quick - same resolution. Don't know if this a HW or SW issue (epson 2450 photo) [alert admin]

VueScan 8.1.21 (Mac OS X)

zooming faster, but everything else slower

While zooming is now pretty instantaneous, every other operation seems to require a buffer and color refresh, and these take longer than previously. Since most of my adjustments are exposure, I'll stick with .19 for now - fewer and faster refreshes. Still highly recommended, but not this version. Epson 2450 / 10.3.7 [alert admin]

googol-Choo-Choo 3D 1.51 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Cool but...

But slow. I get barely 5-6 fps with one engine, 1 car and 1 auto on the 11x11 grid. This on a dual 1.2ghz mac, ATI Radeon 9000 (2x agp), and 1gb ram. This system runs most 3d games pretty decently - what's up? Its fun but I couldn't build and run much of a layout at these speeds. 10.3.6 [alert admin]

SketchUp 4.0.149 (Mac OS X)

Version 4 is improved, works well

This is the second iteration of version 4 I have installed, no problems or issues so far. There are some really nice improvements to an already excellent program. [alert admin]

I no longer use Photoshop.

Well, I won't say I no longer use PS, but I agree with the gist of the review. NX does produce the nicest conversion, and the ability to work directly with camera settings, as well as see their effect after the fact is a good learning tool as well. The program's UI has some shortcomings but it derservers a serious look.

workaround

i noticed the same thing. Then I chose the T300 (right next to the t68. It seemed to take that, so I then tried mine Z525a, and it remembers that as well. Go figure
